Summary

Thirteen guests arrive for dinner at the house of Sir Charles Cartwright, the famous actor。 To avoid bad luck, his secretary insists on making up the number to fourteen, bit its too late for one guest, who chokes to death on his apéritif。。。

But when his martini glass was sent for chemical analysis, there is no trace of poison - just as Poirot had predicted。 What causes the famous detective greater anxiety, however, is the complete lack of any motive。

So good, per usual

Poirot does it again! Was there ever any doubt? The mystery is a bit convoluted (aren't they all?), but another good whodunit from the master。 Poirot does it again! Was there ever any doubt? The mystery is a bit convoluted (aren't they all?), but another good whodunit from the master。 。。。more

。。 :) 。。。more

Ko ne voli Agatu Kristi ne zna da uživa u jednostavnosti。 Neizmjerno zabavno i pomalo kliše zbog čega je cjelokupni utisak još bolji。 P。 S。 The butler did it。

Poirot properly enters the story on page 146, so it’s a solid two star before page 146 and a four star after — ergo, three stars。 An interesting and unexpected conclusion to a rather boring murder。

I read the audiobook version of this title。 Even on audio, it drags through the first half, as Poirot doesn’t really come into the case until 2/3 into the book (guesstimating from the 6 hr audio)。 The only reason I stayed with it was because of the narrator, Andrew Sachs。 He does wonderfully deep and blustery voices for English gentlemen, and his Poirot was very good。 Still worth a listen。

Interesting twist but can't help feel it borrowed heavily from Roger Ackroyd。。。 plus Poirot actually only appears in about 20% of the story。 Interesting twist but can't help feel it borrowed heavily from Roger Ackroyd。。。 plus Poirot actually only appears in about 20% of the story。 。。。more

Not the best Poirot story but it's clever and zips right along to a nicely telegraphed denouement。 The characterization feels perfunctory at times, but Christie manages to give most of the characters at least a smidge of depth。 Not the best Poirot story but it's clever and zips right along to a nicely telegraphed denouement。 The characterization feels perfunctory at times, but Christie manages to give most of the characters at least a smidge of depth。 。。。more

I did end up guessing the villain before Poirot’s final reveal, but it was a close run thing。 (view spoiler)[ Never trust Christie’s attempts to get you to empathize with star-crossed lovers。 It is always a trap。 She short-circuits your sleuthing instincts by playing on your wish for two people to get together。 It is a favorite mechanic of hers, and I nearly fell for it again。 (hide spoiler)] This was a short but very puzzling delight despite its convoluted plot。 Incidentally, I love how Satterthwaite continuously tries to get people to ask him about his previous association with solving crimes and no one ever does。 。。。more
