Summary

One book。 Two readers。 A world of mystery, menace, and desire。

A young woman picks up a book left behind by a stranger。 Inside it are his margin notes, which reveal a reader entranced by the story and by its mysterious author。 She responds with notes of her own, leaving the book for the stranger, and so begins an unlikely conversation that plunges them both into the unknown。

THE BOOK: Ship of Theseus, the final novel by a prolific but enigmatic writer named V。 M。 Straka, in which a man with no past is shanghaied onto a strange ship with a monstrous crew and launched onto a disorienting and perilous journey。

THE WRITER: Straka, the incendiary and secretive subject of one of the world’s greatest mysteries, a revolutionary about whom the world knows nothing apart from the words he wrote and the rumours that swirl around him。

THE READERS: Jennifer and Eric, a college senior and a disgraced grad student, both facing crucial decisions about who they are, who they might become, and how much they’re willing to trust another person with their passions, hurts, and fears。

S。 , conceived by filmmaker J。 J。 Abrams and written by award-winning novelist Doug Dorst, is the chronicle of two readers finding each other in the margins of a book and enmeshing themselves in a deadly struggle between forces they don’t understand。 It is also Abrams and Dorst’s love letter to the written word。

This is one of the most unique reads I have read。 The formatting and effort placed into creating this raised my rating from a 4/4。5 to a solid 5。 This book has so many layers:1。 The Story of S: Ship of Theseus itself2。 The story of the author Straka and his translator3。 The story of two readers, Eric and Jen, and their conversations written within the margins of the book。 A quick guide to the chronology of these messages:A。 Pencil markings by EricB。 Blue (Jen) and black (Eric)C。 Orange (Jen) and This is one of the most unique reads I have read。 The formatting and effort placed into creating this raised my rating from a 4/4。5 to a solid 5。 This book has so many layers:1。 The Story of S: Ship of Theseus itself2。 The story of the author Straka and his translator3。 The story of two readers, Eric and Jen, and their conversations written within the margins of the book。 A quick guide to the chronology of these messages:A。 Pencil markings by EricB。 Blue (Jen) and black (Eric)C。 Orange (Jen) and green (Eric)D。 Purple (Jen) and red (Eric)E。 Black (Jen) and black (Eric)4。 Inserts placed within the pages, anything from postcards to letters to photos to newspaper clippings。 There are multiple web pages that keep track of where insert is placed, if something was to fall out!I went into this story only knowing the above info, and I think that is the best way for a first time read。 This is a story that just needs to be absorbed。 You have to go into it understanding that you will not get everything on a first read, though I felt like I was able to get the overall picture, even though I’m certain there was plenty that I missed。 For those that are interested in delving further there are several websites that have studied the material and gave their own thoughts and analysis。 。。。more

At first it was hard to pay attention to the story and the marginalia at the same time, but once I got into it, both were really captivating! Eerie, suspenseful and sweet all at once。 I plan on giving it another pass to see if I can pick up on more clues。

Well that was some crazy intense trip。 A very different reading experience, and one where there’s so much more to discover after you’ve finished。 I really enjoyed the unique journey you go on with this book - MUST be read as a physical book, there’s just no other way。 Time well spent。

2 stars。Incredibly tedious and poorly written。 But why 5 stars? To boost the ratings。 Because it's worth reading。 Because I mainly went into this book looking for inventiveness and that's what I got。 I got more than what I wanted; this book has been influential to how I've thought about my own writing which is the reason I got it。 But as an actual book it's just overly repetitive。 I have no incentive to care for Straka。 The book should be about half the length at the minimum though preferably a 2 stars。Incredibly tedious and poorly written。 But why 5 stars?

Yes, I read the book "Ship of Theseus" with the footnotes then read the margins and the inserts。 I still feel like there is about 50% of the story that I'm not getting。 I go next to the internet to have them tell me what I missed。 I'm sure it's a lot。 I give it TONS of points just for being so creative and for having me feel like I MUST finish even if when I did I felt very underwhelmed (mostly, i'm sure, because I don't have the whole story) I'm not smart enough for this book。 Yes, I read the book "Ship of Theseus" with the footnotes then read the margins and the inserts。 I still feel like there is about 50% of the story that I'm not getting。 I go next to the internet to have them tell me what I missed。 I'm sure it's a lot。 I give it TONS of points just for being so creative and for having me feel like I MUST finish even if when I did I felt very underwhelmed (mostly, i'm sure, because I don't have the whole story) I'm not smart enough for this book。 。。。more

This book was an easy sell for me - I'm a sucker for authors who push the limitations of the novel format, even if they are ultimately less successful in their execution。 This doesn't fall short in my opinion - it delivers a masterfully woven-together reading experience that twines several disparate timelines and characters into a surprisingly immersive story。 The margin writing adds several layers and don't be afraid to read it all at once - the various colors of ink occur at different times bu This book was an easy sell for me - I'm a sucker for authors who push the limitations of the novel format, even if they are ultimately less successful in their execution。 This doesn't fall short in my opinion - it delivers a masterfully woven-together reading experience that twines several disparate timelines and characters into a surprisingly immersive story。 The margin writing adds several layers and don't be afraid to read it all at once - the various colors of ink occur at different times but instead of spoiling future events, they provide masterful little flashes of foreshadowing。 Because there are several stories being told, there are several opportunities to crashland the ending, but the book rolls into a satisfying enough end for all timelines。 A surprising mystery novel that you get to unravel beside the meta-level characters, with enough fiddly bits to appeal to the explorer inside us all。 Highly recommended if just for the experience。 Also if you're a fast reader and often lament getting through a great book in too little time to savor it, this is a great pickup - the denseness of the pages calls to mind a puzzle bowl for dogs that wolf down their food。 It will definitely take you a little longer than you expect to get through this, but it's a worthwhile journey。 。。。more

That is the question answered in the novel, S, by J。J。 Abrams and Doug Dorst。SYNOPSISThe book is based around the mysterious writer, V,M Straka, who is the writer of the book, Ship of Theseus。 Straka, who the world knows little of, except his works, mysteriously vanishes with no clue to who he truly was or were he vanished to。 This, his final book, describes the story of a man with no memory who is forced to join a monstrous crew on a strange ship, that leads him on an even stranger journey。In a first edition of this book, The Ship of Theseus, which found in a library on a college campus, a young woman, Jennifer, picks up the book to find the musings of a stranger that are found in the margins of the book。 She in turn writes a message to this stranger in the margin and places the book back on the shelf she found it。 (writing in a first edition book is sacrilege or any other book。。。) The author of these notes, Eric, finds the message, writes one in return and places the book back。 Over the course of many evenings Jennifer and Eric reply to each others messages。 (Can you see the reference to Inception and Tenet yet?) Eric is desperate to find what happened to the mysterious Straka。 As the two of them develop a strong relationship in this manner, it becomes apparent a 'secret organisation' is desperate to keep secret the dark secrets of this enigma。REVIEWS, was described as Abrams & Dorst's love letter to the written word。 It certainly shows a depth of detail to both of these stories all wrapped up lovingly in this one book。 Through out the book are extra details to the story of Eric and Jennifer。 You find postcards sent from Eric to Jennifer while he leaves to find out more about Straka, letters to Eric from Jennifer describing her own difficult past。 What I love most is the coffee shop napkin that has a detailed map drawn out on it。 Abram & Dorst went to the trouble of inventing a coffee shop and making these napkins to make their story so realistic。 You feel that you have stumbled onto this book and you either want to find out what really happened to Straka, Jennifer and Eric and continue the story by adding your own notes, or like you're eavesdropping on someone's private conversation。The brilliance of the concept of this book can be lost because of the overlapping stories。 Do you read the 'Ship of Theseus' story all the way through, then read Eric's original musings followed by the messages between Eric & Jennifer? If you decide to read the original story then go back through all the marginal notes, you find yourself inexplicably drawn to them, or a letter, napkin, newspaper cut out falls out of the page and the compulsion to read them is overwhelming, When I read through this book I'd seen other reviews that suggested trying to read the stories separately would explain the different stories, I lasted no more than the first few pages before starting to read the emerging story from the margins。 To me this very much felt like I was reading the script of Tenet or Inception, the story within a story within a story。 It either leaves you extremely baffled as to what you have just read or wishing that every book went to such detail to entice you deeper into every page。 If a book could be presented like the latest blockbuster in 4D then this is the literature equivalent, VERDICT - 4****/5Purely for the enjoyment this book gave me trying to decipher the story of the mystery man in the 'Ship of Theseus', to trying to work out who the mysterious group are trying to stop Eric & Jennifer discovering the secrets of Straka, to the extraordinary lengths of detail this book deserves it's 4 stars。As to the question, does being an excellent movie and tv director make you a good novelist? The jury is still out。 。。。more
