Summary

Erika

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires。 My nightmares, however, became my obsession。

His name is Michael Crist。

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch。 He is handsome, strong, and completely terrifying。 The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me。

But I noticed him。

I saw him。 I heard him。 The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away。

Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael。 He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore。

Because he’s finally noticed me。

Michael

Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika。

My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table。 She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close。 I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind。 That’s all I really want anyway。

Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college。

In my city。

Unprotected。

The opportunity is too good to be true as well as the timing。 Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out。

We’ve waited。 We’ve been patient。 And now every last one of her nightmares will come true。

this book is so unique to anything i’ve ever read, i never knew what would happen next and it’s impossible to put down! the beginning is kind of slow but the middle picks up pace and gets a lot more interesting。 the last 5-7 chapters were the best though! the last couple of chapters are just so precious and both of their povs ending with the same line, i loved that!

I had to try this book because I'm in love with Penelope Douglas。 The entire book I was conflicted with whether I loved it or hated it。 The book isn't bad it's actually really good with a good plot, I couldn't stop reading it, but it's a dark romance and I didn't know that going into it so I was a little surprised。 The plot was so good though that I had to continue。 If your into a dark romance I think you'll enjoy it。 I had to try this book because I'm in love with Penelope Douglas。 The entire book I was conflicted with whether I loved it or hated it。 The book isn't bad it's actually really good with a good plot, I couldn't stop reading it, but it's a dark romance and I didn't know that going into it so I was a little surprised。 The plot was so good though that I had to continue。 If your into a dark romance I think you'll enjoy it。 。。。more

This was read as part of a book club。 If I am honest it's not something I would normally choose to read。 All the characters seem to have deep seated problems and I could not identify with them。 Also it was very predictable and the main character Rika was portrayed to be a little dim or stupid that she could not work out what was going on。 This was read as part of a book club。 If I am honest it's not something I would normally choose to read。 All the characters seem to have deep seated problems and I could not identify with them。 Also it was very predictable and the main character Rika was portrayed to be a little dim or stupid that she could not work out what was going on。 。。。more

Before I read the book I read reviews of a extreme combinations of good and bad。 I was interested in it myself。 In all honesty, I didn't think the book was bad at all, in fact I might say I actually enjoyed it。 It had an unique plot, most of the time I was intrigued, and interesting characters and background were presented。 On the other hand, I wouldn't necessarily call it a dark romance or anything extreme。 It really depends on what your definition of 'dark romance' is - in my opinion it was pr Before I read the book I read reviews of a extreme combinations of good and bad。 I was interested in it myself。 In all honesty, I didn't think the book was bad at all, in fact I might say I actually enjoyed it。 It had an unique plot, most of the time I was intrigued, and interesting characters and background were presented。 On the other hand, I wouldn't necessarily call it a dark romance or anything extreme。 It really depends on what your definition of 'dark romance' is - in my opinion it was pretty light compared to my norm。 Other than that, I think the book was nicely written, it really did convey the characters as corrupt and as I mentioned before it kept me intrigued for the most part。 One star down because of the expectation of DARK romance under which it was categorized but didn't fully show。 Overall, I think it is worth reading, I wouldn't call it my favourite book but I don't regret reading it。 。。。more

LOVED IT 🌶🤤In the catacombs? LOVED IT !The steam room? LOVED IT 🌶🤤 (gahh makes me sound like some horny chick)Erika and Michael's relationship began way when Erika was born and Michael held baby Erika in his arms。 But the minute she was born。 He wasn't hers to hold。 And the minute he held her in his arms, he wanted nothing more than to have her。 Erika was always promised to Trevor, Michael's brother (and a fucking prick)。 But Erika wanted Michael, noticed him, wherever he was。 Michael noticed her too。 But it was when Erika was 16 where Michael ACTUALLY noticed her。 It was on Devil's Night。 Michael wanted to take her but she was too young but She followed him to the cathedral and when Michael saw her lurking around St。 Killian's? He knew he just had to have her。 They both corrupted each other's minds and souls。 Michael was the one who taught her to answer to no one, to not to care what other people thought, to OWN WHAT YOU DO。 He invited her with his friends to pull pranks on Devil's Night。 They took videos as memories they could look back to。 At the end of the night, Erika finally owned up to want she wanted and confessed to Michael but he shot her down。 The next day, all hell broke loose。 Videos of their pranks were leaked onto the internet。 Damon, Will and Kai, Michael's friends had their faces leaked onto the internet committing crimes。 They were all sent to jail, except Michael。 Damon saw that Erika was the one who had Will's shirt and the phone was in his hoodie and deduced that it was her who leaked it as revenge for Michael shooting her down。 Thus, this is how they planned to ruin Erika Fane, to take her down, to take everything away from her。 Turns out she wasn't even the one who did it。 Michael and Erika's relationship: Michael pushed Erika。 He always pushed her to step out of her comfort zone and to answer to no one。 Own what you do。 Erika always wanted freedom。 Same as Michael。 She didn't want to live within her comfort zones anymore。 On Devil's Night, she felt truly free, she felt like herself。 Breaking rules and wrecking havoc。 Michael didn't like showing vulnerability。 It was Erika who also taught him that rules and other people's opinions were just an illusion。 You want something? Take it。 Michael also took his time when finally confessing that he loves Erika。 It took the fear of losing her to finally get him to confess it。 Erika wasn't weak when she let Michael in between her legs again after what he did to her。 As the saying Love conquers all goes, she loved him and obviously he loves her too but is just scared that once he admits it, it'll make him vulnerable。 But love makes us strong, stronger than when we are driven by hate。 You know how in a group of four there's always the leader (Michael), the leader's best friend (Kai), the troublemaker and loose canon (Damon) and then the quiet one (Will)。 Damon is an insecure little prick, hating on Erika because women would drive him and his friends apart but in the end he did it all by himself。 Our insecurities stem from somewhere and it really depends on how we deal with them。 He let his rule him and it drove him and his friends apart。 As much as I loved this book there were two parts in the book where I SERIOUSLY couldn't handle/ accept it。 On Devil's Night three years ago, Damon and two other people took Erika to a dark place and practically wanted to feel her sans rape her?? God, it was messed up and I just couldn't handle it。 Next, The Four Horsemen really did some seriously FUCKED UP shit to Erika thinking it was her who leaked the videos of them which caused Damon, Will and Kai to be sent to prison for three years。 They tortured her and practically wanted to gang bang her。 It was seriously messed up。 All of this shit could have been avoided if Michael just stood up and confronted Erika。 ALL IN ALL, this book was amazing except for the hazing part。 I believe that every book, movie and series is trying to tell it's viewer something important。 This book, in my opinion, is telling us that if you want something take it。 Own who you are。 Opinions don't matter unless you let them matter。 This book had mystery, spicy and freaking dark romance。 I've seen some opinions about how this book had so much spicy and was just dumb with the steam room scene, but I honestly don't think that。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Before I start my very first book review on goodreads, I have a couple things to announce so I can make sense here。 I won't be perosnally attacking Penelope Douglas, since she's actually one of my favorite authors of all time。 I'm aware that this story is a complete work of fiction and does not, in anyway, depict our real world society。 I also didn't expect this book to be realistic at all。 So before people think I'm making real world connections and comparisons (which wouldn't be a bad thing an Before I start my very first book review on goodreads, I have a couple things to announce so I can make sense here。 I won't be perosnally attacking Penelope Douglas, since she's actually one of my favorite authors of all time。 I'm aware that this story is a complete work of fiction and does not, in anyway, depict our real world society。 I also didn't expect this book to be realistic at all。 So before people think I'm making real world connections and comparisons (which wouldn't be a bad thing anyway), I'm going to be explaining why it was。。。 not necessarily a BAD book but-It was horrendous, okay。 I hated it。 There I said it。 It seriously hurts to say it out loud because I went into this book wanting to love it and enjoy it like never before。 I've seen countless recommendations for this book and multiple people saying they loved it so much that they couldn't put the book down。。。 God。 I seriously feel like an asshole saying this but ya'll really robbed me of my free time。 I want every minute back please。 I'm giving a one star because there's nothing less than that。 It wasn't an interesting story and at first I thought it was because i'm not really a big fan of dark romance, but then I realized that no。。。 It's not about the genre。 The story is just really bad。 The characters? Even worse。 The poor representation of the real world? Horrendous。 Just。。。 horrendous。 I want to talk about the characters first and give you a quick understanding of who she is。 Erika Fane, better known as Rika, is a nineteen year old college student who wants independence and freedom as an adult。 We learn this in the very beginning of the book and continue to learn this about her when she moves out of her childhood neighborhood and home to move to a stranger city just for the sake of being alone and finding her freedom。 Of course we love this concept of a female protagonist who wants to be able to support herself and be "free", however, the more you read, the more you struggle to understand what she needs freedom。。。 from。To give you a little background, she's a little rich girl in a suburban neighborhood with a big house and childhood friends who also have a massive residence meaning she basically swims in money for a living。 She also hates that she is being supported by her money and her family's money all the time。 She hates that she can't do certain things because she's rich and she can't be her rebellious self because of how people would somehow react since she's。。 。 you know。。。 rich, popular and white??? For the sake of humanity and a proper rating, I will not bring race into this。 I don't have a problem with rich people。 Personally, I believe everyone's got their own problems, whether they're rich or not。 But Rika Fane is seriously the weirdest character I've ever seen。 I liked her in the first few paragraphs and then suddenly, I felt like chocking her with my iphone charger。 I'm not kidding, I felt really bipolar。 She came off to be someone who wanted to be free, but then you ask yourself。。。 from what? The you beat yourself over and over when you're not able to answer。 It was mentioned in the book that she wanted to be free of judgement, and to be free to do whatever she pleases without anyone caring。 She wanted to be rebellious and do stupid things since that's all apart of her character。 But the book failed to show me, and many other readers, why she is so adamant on a freedom that doesn't seem to be taken away from her in any way。 She's obsessed with wanting to be the different girl who loves to do bad things, but isn't able to because she's rich and popular。 wow。。。。 I just really couldn't sympathize or even understand her at all。 Oh my god, she was also very annoying with the way she would change her attitude。 On one page, she would stand up for her independence。 In the next page, when she is dealing with the love interest。。。 She's vulnerable and stupid。 Like help me, I can't believe I managed to finish this book。 Moving on, I want to talk about Michael Crist, the love interest。 He's the main guy in the four horsemen, a really cringy name they gave to a bunch of sadists who want revenge on a girl who supposedly did them wrong (when we learn in the book that this was not even the case。) I seriously don't know what to say about Michael。 All I know is that he doesn't have much of a character。 If there's one thing I know about him, it's that he gets turned on very easily and constantly rants in every paragraph how he wants to rip her clothes off。 Actually, If I'm being honest here, I know one thing about him。 He likes Rika because she's similar to him in the aspect of wanting "freedom"。 Again, I'm not sure why, but that's very clearly the theme of this book。 The two of them are rich popular kids who have expectations of them that they obviously don't own up to, and Rika specifically admires Michael for not caring about those expectations。 So it's very obviously a love story between two spoiled brats who want to do whatever they want but for some reason, cant。 Now。。。 Do I like Michael Angelo? No。 I don't like him but I can't say that I hate him either。 He's literally what I like to call "meh" where he doesn't really give off an impression and simply bothers me for existing but also doesn't bother me enough。 So he's in the middle。 I can tell that he was motivated by his guilt the entire book and that he just felt so upset that all his friends went to jail while he stayed outside, hating her。 Ugh。 He's very sexually aroused by her since he loved to mention her very nipples which are always hard in his presence apparently her blonde hair which he can't get enough of。 He's very explicit with his description of her and I'd rather keep this PG so let's keep moving。 What do the four horsemen want? Well。。。 I'm surprised it wasn't to kill her but they want revenge on her for somehow being responsible for three of their incarcerations。 The other horsemen, Damon, Will and Kai have all been to jail before and according to them, it's all Rika's fault。 I don't like any of his friends either, especially Damon。 He scared me the most in the book to be honest。 I literally pictured him as Joe from You at one point。 He's terrifying。 Will is almost as bad as Damon。 We just see less of him in the book。 Kai is probably my favorite character in the book。 And I hate everyone here :) There's also a guy named Trevor Crist, the younger brother of our wonderful Michael Crist who is also a creep and definitely should die。 He was always claiming Rika as his girlfriend and did the most at the end of the day。 Now that the characters are out of the way。。。 Every single one of them need lots of psychological evaluation。 They all need professional help。 Seriously。 No seriously。 Rika needs it, Michael needs it。 Damon should have life sentence。 Will is gross so him too。 Kai。。。 was the most normal but was still a weirdo so he also needs therapy。 EVERYONE。 EVEN THE PARENTS。 Do I recommend this book? No。 No NONONONONONONONONONONONONONonononoNOONONOIf you like dark romance, you can find better ones。 This one seriously messed me up。 mentally draining。 。。。more

A Test of WillsShe lost her father and her mother has checked out, chemically。 All she wants is a little acknowledgment from the one man she has always dreamed about being with。 But, he wants nothing to do with her, or so she thinks。 As the story bounces between the past and the present, truths begin to unfold and revenge becomes the focus of the story。 The question is, who’s deserving of punishment? I highly recommend this book because there isn’t a lagging moment within it。

Phew! This lives up tot he genre of "dark romance" because this story is certainly dark。 Please look up the trigger warnings before picking up this book because there are a lot of thing。 One thing I appreciated about this was how it illustrated really broken people finding others who love them。 The relationships aren't what I would call "healthy" by mental health standards, but they are what each person needed。 I enjoyed this book a lot, although I acknowledge the problematic issues with it。 3/5 Phew!
