Loved this! Almost had an “Interview with A Vampire” feel, but prettier & more magical。 And, there are no vampires。 🤷🏻‍♀️

Did not finish, so one star rating。 I was intrigued at first, but got pretty bored after awhile and realized I was only 25% done and skipped and read the end。 It had basically turned into a long list of people she had slept with and how she looked for food/clothes when I gave up。 I thought it an intriguing idea but it was too slow and didn’t do it for me。FYI: sex, suicide attempt

One of the best books I've read。 It did take a while for me to get into all the way, but once I did, I couldn't put it down。 One of the best books I've read。 It did take a while for me to get into all the way, but once I did, I couldn't put it down。 。。。more

I loved the original concept of this book! I never read a book like this one before so enjoyed it a lot。 It is well written even though the story does go back and forth in years。 I also liked Addie very much。 (Gerard's review) I loved the original concept of this book! What a unique and lovely story! If historical fiction isn't normally your genre and you are wary of this book being categorized in this genre - don't pass it by! This book was absolutely FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC。 If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat action-filled book, this isn't it, because it's so much more。 VE Schwab does a fantastic job of developing a character-centric story that unfolds slowly and allows you to reflect on topics surrounding your own mortality (through Addie's lack thereof and Henry's。。。um。。。situation), life, destiny, art and history, good vs evil, real love vs unhealthy obsession, and so many more。 At the surface the book is a bea This book was absolutely FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC。 If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat action-filled book, this isn't it, because it's so much more。 VE Schwab does a fantastic job of developing a character-centric story that unfolds slowly and allows you to reflect on topics surrounding your own mortality (through Addie's lack thereof and Henry's。。。um。。。situation), life, destiny, art and history, good vs evil, real love vs unhealthy obsession, and so many more。 At the surface the book is a beautiful tale of a French girl's adamant struggle to be remembered through any means possible but all it takes is looking a bit deeper and this gorgeous and incredibly relevant life lesson begins to unfold before you。 The incredibly casual LGBT representation in the book was remarkably refreshing。 The LGBT characters don't feel the need to 'come out' to the reader or to each other and there is no conflict surrounding their sexualities, they just are, and I think VE Schwab captured this and the bisexual experience exceptionally well。 Of course, basically no book ever is free of criticism。 The novel is quite eurocentric, having Addie travel between Europe and the US while completely ignoring the existence of the other continents and cultures there are to explore。 I personally would've loved to see Addie traveling through Asia, the Middle East and Africa。 Having said that, this wasn't really a deal-breaker for me, I just chucked it up to Addie's nostalgia for 'Home' and her attachment and frequent returns to Villon and Paris more often than I would've if I were in her situation。 Also, VE Schwab has 3 crutch words that I picked up on: 'wolfish' when describing Luc, 'frozen in amber' about Addie's life, and 'flesh and bone' about Addie's being forgettable but not invisible。 These are always a bit annoying to notice, but don't take away from the brilliance of Schwab's prose。I will now be making this book my entire personality for the next month and shoving it in everyone's face forever, thank you very much ❤️ 。。。more

Alright folks。 I can see why people like this book, but it fell flat for me。There were so many good plot opportunities that the author didn't take。 So much repetativeness that could have been removed if she'd just delved further into the backstory。 (She was a spy in WWII? Where's that story - why not play that up?)Addie never grows as a character and clearly never cares to。 She remains her same, selfish self。 It's like groundhog day if Bill Murray had never figured out how to be kinder and more Alright folks。 I can see why people like this book, but it fell flat for me。There were so many good plot opportunities that the author didn't take。 So much repetativeness that could have been removed if she'd just delved further into the backstory。 (She was a spy in WWII? Booktok recommended and I read, and wow。I've never read a book like this before but it has become of my absolute favourites! The whole premises is intriguing and fun to read, with little bits of heartbreak, shock, and anger。Addie prays after dark to get out of an unwilling marriage, asks for time and is given it, yet it comes with a price。 She is always forgotten, even her parents - but the darkness always remembers her。I cannot fault Addie for what she did, with the life that was being forced upon her many would have done the same thing, and I was rooting for her。 The Darkness, who we come to name Luc and granted her wish, was so interesting the moment he came in the pages and kept that title。 And when she made the deal with him I was waiting for the price, and it was heart-breaking to read that her parents and friends don't remember her, I can't imagine what that would do to me other then bring me such pain。Despite it being interesting, it was sad reading how she adjusts, how she got abused by others and had to give her virginity away to get money。 I'm happy she gets better along the way, but she will always remember these things, which makes me feel for her。And when we meet the one who remembers her - I was so invested on how he remembers her。 Their romance was a little cute but I didn't really feel it。 But Luc however - I really felt him and Addie together。 From the moment he appeared to her I was invested in how their relationship would change and grow, and I was not disappointed - I even gave a slight cheer when it was revealed that the two had kissed and slept together numerous times。 The ending could have been done better, it was written as if there was another book to follow which I defiantly wouldn't mind。 The only think I really liked about the ending was Addie being together with Luc, even though she decided to try and make him sick of her so that she would be free - if there is a next book then it should be about that, and I would in one of the firsts in line to read it。My favourite part of this whole book is the writing, it's so beautiful and a fun to read, I understood everything and could see everything in my head clearly as I imagined things that were described。Conclusion: A fantastic read that has become of of my favourites, I highly recommend this book, and for a sequel! 。。。more

I mostly enjoyed reading the book each evening before bed so it certainly was a readable book, but about half way through, the story was just not evolving like I had hoped and became very repetitive。 The characters did not seem to be growing in awareness or maturity, and seemed to just be depressed and tired。 For a story that covers 300 years, visits to historical times and places were hit and run and rather inconsequential to the story, so there was very little sense of time changing。 The story I mostly enjoyed reading the book each evening before bed so it certainly was a readable book, but about half way through, the story was just not evolving like I had hoped and became very repetitive。 The characters did not seem to be growing in awareness or maturity, and seemed to just be depressed and tired。 For a story that covers 300 years, visits to historical times and places were hit and run and rather inconsequential to the story, so there was very little sense of time changing。 The story the characters told was one of dark, depressing, gloomy loneliness, loss and survival with only glimmers of brief happiness found with loss waiting at the other end and I was shocked at the very end of the book when the characters pondered whether they would make the same life altering decisions again, declaring a passionate "yes", giving a summary of how great life really is, with all the beautiful and happy things to see and be apart of。。。none of which was ever portrayed in the book。 There are a few obvious themes that someone could make up themselves to spend some time contemplating like how we all wish for things that really may not be in our best interest, or what life would really be like if we could avoid all the things we did not want to deal with, what our possessions mean to us, and how important validation from others can be for us, but I would say this story took one rather shallow line through these themes and beat it to death for 300 years。。。 and in the end。。。there is a plan where the main character knows she will win。。。right after she beats it to death for another 300 years。 Sounds pretty miserable to me。 。。。more

This book left me with a feeling i cannot describe。 I just want to scream into a pillow and let it all out。 Addie isn't happy, she is forced to marry a man she doesn't love。 So she runs away and makes a deal with the darkness, which she will later regret。 300 years later, she finds hope once again。 The story is slow, but it isn't boring。 It's enticing and intriguing and it just pulls you in。 And the writing is just so beautiful。5 stars ✨ This book left me with a feeling i cannot describe。 I just want to scream into a pillow and let it all out。 Addie isn't happy, she is forced to marry a man she doesn't love。 So she runs away and makes a deal with the darkness, which she will later regret。 300 years later, she finds hope once again。 The story is slow, but it isn't boring。 It's enticing and intriguing and it just pulls you in。 And the writing is just so beautiful。5 stars ✨ 。。。more

What a weird book。 I could probably write a more eloquent review that expands on the highlights and lowlights of this book but for now, I’m at a loss for words that I spent all this time, reading such a long story for that to be the outcome。 🤨
