Summary

From the Academy Award®–winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction

I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five。 Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud。 How to be fair。 How to have less stress。 How to have fun。 How to hurt people less。 How to get hurt less。 How to be a good man。 How to have meaning in life。 How to be more me。

Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries。 I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers。 I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life’s challenges - how to get relative with the inevitable - you can enjoy a state of success I call “catching greenlights。”

So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far。 This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls。 Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality。 Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops。

Hopefully, it’s medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot’s license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears。

It’s a love letter。 To life。

It’s also a guide to catching more greenlights - and to realizing that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too。

Good luck。

Greenlights By Matthew McConaughey 3。5 / 5 stars You know, I really just don’t know how to go about rating this one。 The story itself is engaging enough, but I swear, the number of times I rolled my eyes and called b。s。 in my head while I was listening--well, it was a lot。 I get the feeling that Matthew (in my best Australian accent--you’ll get it when you read it) embellished just a tad。 For example, did his parents really teeter on the edge of a physical fight in the kitchen with Mom wielding Greenlights By Matthew McConaughey 3。5 / 5 stars You know, I really just don’t know how to go about rating this one。 The story itself is engaging enough, but I swear, the number of times I rolled my eyes and called b。s。 in my head while I was listening--well, it was a lot。 I get the feeling that Matthew (in my best Australian accent--you’ll get it when you read it) embellished just a tad。 For example, did his parents really teeter on the edge of a physical fight in the kitchen with Mom wielding a knife and Dad a Ketchup bottle? I believe that。 But did they really erupt into lust immediately after? I doubt it。 and if they did, why was Matthew McConaughey seeing that?Fast forward to a couple of dreams that sent him journeying to a couple of different continents in search of totally unrealistic experiences。 The most interesting part about this book was McConaughey’s retelling of journey through acting, though I’ll admit, the rest wasn’t uninteresting。 It was just unbelievable。 Here's the gist: Mermaids, bongo drums, and what McConaughey calls “celestial intervention。” Overall, entertaining。 But glorified and self-righteous。 Have you read it? 3。5 / 5 stars 。。。more

I’m so surprised by how much I loved Matthew McConaughey’s memoir, it’s possibly the best memoir I’ve ever read。 He was witty, insightful, a little bit crazy, and unexpectedly sage。 As an added treat, I highly recommend listening to him read it in the audio book。

Good read, lots of good insights

Erica

Loved it, especially listening to Matthew McConaughey himself read his story。

I really like Matthew McConughey as an actor, particularly in his RomComs。 Although he says he has done a lot of soul searching I think he is in denial regarding his upbringing。 He seems to accept domestic violence and corporal punishment as being normal。 Matthew's belief in lying and plagarism also need to be questioned。 Overall an entertaining read。 I really like Matthew McConughey as an actor, particularly in his RomComs。 Although he says he has done a lot of soul searching I think he is in denial regarding his upbringing。 He seems to accept domestic violence and corporal punishment as being normal。 Matthew's belief in lying and plagarism also need to be questioned。 Overall an entertaining read。 。。。more

The guy is smarter and deeper than expected for a rom-com pretty face。 I came out of this book as a fan and thinking I should go and watch more of his movies。

Highly suggest the audiobook on this one。 Also I for some reason thought McConaughey was。。。like, an airhead? But this was really good and well-written。 And he talked about having a 3。82 GPA at UT-Austin, which is a higher GPA than I ever had in my life, so。 Egg on my face。

He has a very interesting story tell, and I enjoyed listening to the audiobook to hear him tell the story himself。

Such a great memoir! Definitely recommend the audiobook for the full experience。

If my ears have enjoyed anything in the past week it’s been from this audiobook。 I quite literally would play it on my speaker while I roamed around the house and it was like good ole Matthew was my life long companion sharing his stories with me。 I usually have a hard time w attention span and I simply couldn’t get enough from this !!! In one part he talked about how we use the word unbelievable wrong —“Why do we describe things that blow our minds as unbelievable when it makes us believe in it even more?” And that’s the tea honey (also those weren’t exact words so maybe use quotation marks w squigglys attached) 。。。more

I loved every part of this incredible memoir of Matthew McConaughey。 And I think that I loved even more because of the fact that Matthew McConaughey read the memoir on the audio book version of the fantastic book。。。

Kayla Anne

This was a great and surprising read。 Who knew Matthew McConaughey was so layered。 And it was a perfect pandemic, spirit-lifting read because Mr。 McConaughey is such an eternal optimist。 I listened to the Audible and he also did a great job in narrating it。

Tova Latowsky

Such a good audiobook! I felt like Matthew was flirting with me the entire time ☺️ I don’t know why I was hesitant to read this but I was happily surprised! He is just a cool, kind hearted dude who clearly has a good moral compass and is in touch with his emotions。 Also made me want to travel so badly so probably not an ideally times read in the heart of lockdown 😭

The only bad thing about this book is that I finished it & it's over! He made me stop and think, definitely laugh and smile at honest & vulnerable moments。 HIGHLY RECOMMEND! This was such an amazing insightful book。 I wouldn't even call it a book, more of an adventure。 Listening to McConaughey smoothly read this book was just awesome。 He gave me such good perspective on life and I am now excited to uncover all the green lights。 This was such an amazing insightful book。 I wouldn't even call it a book, more of an adventure。 Listening to McConaughey smoothly read this book was just awesome。 He gave me such good perspective on life and I am now excited to uncover all the green lights。 。。。more

While I love Matthew McConaughey, this really solidified my dislike for memoirs。 Honestly。 Wtf do we care so much about the lives & upbringings of celebrities?

I highly recommend that you listen to this on Audiobook。 It’s so enjoyable to hear Matthew McConaughey talk to you for 7 hours telling his life stories and giving you little life pearls along the way。 The end product: an autobiography that illustrates not just Matthew the actor, but as a person, flawed but ever striving, and shaped by values and commitment to his family。 In essence, he’s a guy you’d get two beers with。 The life lessons can come across too “self help” for some, but it’s tried tru I highly recommend that you listen to this on Audiobook。 It’s so enjoyable to hear Matthew McConaughey talk to you for 7 hours telling his life stories and giving you little life pearls along the way。 The end product: an autobiography that illustrates not just Matthew the actor, but as a person, flawed but ever striving, and shaped by values and commitment to his family。 In essence, he’s a guy you’d get two beers with。 The life lessons can come across too “self help” for some, but it’s tried truths that we sometimes forget and should welcome again。 The book is at its best when he highlights his early life experiences in Udalve, his pivot to acting, his adventures in South America and Africa, and the so called mccoughnessaince that cemented his legacy。 P。S。 to all the Louisiana readers, he writes a wonderful love letter to New Orleans。 。。。more

Awesome ReadHonestly, I have never been a big fan of Matthew McConaughey。 Greenlights interested me and I read it。 Not only did I read it, I loved it。 I really liked the honesty and self reflection throughout the book。 It shed light on his character。。。。 it humanized him。 I have more respect for Matthew and I like him。 Greenlights made me think and reflect on my own life as well。

Alexa Fortuna

Wow。 I was not expecting to love this book so much but it was so raw, funny, emotional, and introspective。 You learn about Mcconaughey and yourself and he really puts life in perspective。

Samantha

What a great storyteller。 Some great insights and wild stories。 There are a lot of things he says that feel very privileged and noncommittal, but I'm down with the philosophy for the most part。 If you like audio books, this is a good one - narrated by McConaughey of course。 What a great storyteller。 Some great insights and wild stories。 There are a lot of things he says that feel very privileged and noncommittal, but I'm down with the philosophy for the most part。 If you like audio books, this is a good one - narrated by McConaughey of course。 。。。more

It’s safe to say that I found this book thoroughly entertaining。 I can’t imagine reading the book would be same experience as listening to McConaughey read the audiobook。 Within the first 45 minutes of the book I had audibly gasped and laughed out loud multiple times。 The stories of his life range from unbelievable to spiritual to intense and everything in between。 I had no idea McConaughey was such a gifted writer。 A true renaissance man。

Jessica

I listened to the audiobook, since McConaughey reads it himself。 He has some funny and pretty ridiculous stories that were entertaining。 The random bumper stickers were weird, but it was interesting learning about his life and acting career, especially the time where he transitioned from being in rom coms to more serious roles。

Ben

A fun, charismatic biography, but more useful as chance to experience the thinking of someone completely unlike me than a source of usable life advice。 Not that he’s not insightful, he is very, but survivor bias & hindsight axioms are mostly just feel good bumper stickers。
