Summary

Candide is the story of a gentle man who, though pummeled and slapped in every direction by fate, clings desperately to the belief that he lives in "the best of all possible worlds。" On the surface a witty, bantering tale, this eighteenth-century classic is actually a savage, satiric thrust at the philosophical optimism that proclaims that all disaster and human suffering is part of a benevolent cosmic plan。 Fast, funny, often outrageous, the French philosopher's immortal narrative takes Candide around the world to discover that -- contrary to the teachings of his distinguished tutor Dr。 Pangloss -- all is not always for the best。 Alive with wit, brilliance, and graceful storytelling, Candide has become Voltaire's most celebrated work。

I really enjoyed this - it's adventurous and funny and obviously full of satire。 Read it in a couple days and had a hard time putting it down。 I really enjoyed this - it's adventurous and funny and obviously full of satire。 Read it in a couple days and had a hard time putting it down。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Не ожидала, что мне понравится это произведение。 В нем много философских размышлений, исторических отсылок, приключений, грустных моментов, но в конце - хэппи-энд。 Я люблю что-то, направленное на критику общественного устроя и это именно такая книга。

This one doesn't age too well unfortunately。 Only reason I didn't DNF was the short length。 Some of Voltaire's sardonic humor made me laugh a few times but the old way of story telling just doesn't hold up well to a modern audience。 This one doesn't age too well unfortunately。 Only reason I didn't DNF was the short length。 Some of Voltaire's sardonic humor made me laugh a few times but the old way of story telling just doesn't hold up well to a modern audience。 。。。more

Love this book that doesn't stop moving。In every chapter themes: 1) The best of all possible worlds, 2) Cause and effect, and 3) Freewill are brought up and make the reader re-evaluate their position on them。The ending brings in all home。 This is such a well written piece that it is the fourth time I have read it。 Love this book that doesn't stop moving。In every chapter themes: 1) The best of all possible worlds, 2) Cause and effect, and 3) Freewill are brought up and make the reader re-evaluate their position on them。The ending brings in all home。 This is such a well written piece that it is the fourth time I have read it。 。。。more

The story leaps around quite a bit and, at times, it hard to reconcile the enormous shifts in the plot, such as the dead coming back to life or the consistent coincidences。 Overall, it is an intriguing look at the beginnings of the form of the modern novel and an fun look at attitudes and ideas from the past in the best of all possible worlds。

A classic that endures to this day。

The plot is mainly about the adventures of the titular protagonist, Candide, who is banished from his uncle's estate after fooling around with Cunegande, the uncle's beautiful daughter。 Until this point, Candide's life is sheltered and his thoughts are moulded to a great extent by his mentor, Professor Pangloss。 Like his name, Pangloss loves to talk on all topics and show his intellect。 He seems strangely optimistic and Candide blindly believes him。 After the banishment, Candide's life upturns a The plot is mainly about the adventures of the titular protagonist, Candide, who is banished from his uncle's estate after fooling around with Cunegande, the uncle's beautiful daughter。 Until this point, Candide's life is sheltered and his thoughts are moulded to a great extent by his mentor, Professor Pangloss。 Like his name, Pangloss loves to talk on all topics and show his intellect。 He seems strangely optimistic and Candide blindly believes him。 After the banishment, Candide's life upturns and he faces horrific trials and tribulations across various countries and meeting a lot of people, including a reunion with Cunegande and Pangloss, throughout the course of the story。This is the most satirical book I've ever read。 It has quite a lot of wit and even more of absurdities。 Characters jabber on strange philosophical adages, characters travel across the world and back like it's no one's business (keeping in mind that the book was written in 1759!), characters appear and die and reappear and die again。。。 I quite don't understand what to make of this。 The story is filled with a sharp wit。 Voltaire arms to be hitting out at all existing establishments such as the monarchy and the church with his pen。 His sarcasm is razor sharp and it's no surprise that the book ruffled quite a few feathers when it first came out。 After a point though, the absurdities became too much for me to take, though a more mature reader might be able to appreciate them better。 I just started longing for normal writing again and hence rushed through the second half with just about 50% attention。 This book didn't rock my world, nor was I expecting it to。***********************Join me on the Facebook group, Readers Forever!, for more reviews, book-related discussions and fun。Follow me on Instagram: RoshReviews 。。。more

Set in the mid 18th century, an eternal optimist from Westphalia named Candide travels the world after a series of misfortune events happen to him。 He winds up in the middle of the Bulgar/Avar wars from which he escapes to France and ends up traveling through Portugal, Argentina, Peru, Venice, and Constantinople。 This is a gripping political/philosophical satire of its age。 Many witty criticisms are laden throughout and Candide's whimsical nature makes it a pleasure to read! I was supposed to read it for a Swedish class, but I ended up reading it in English instead。 The book is certainly an interesting read。 It's by no means the best book I have had the pleasure of reading, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in literature。 It was slightly boring because of the exhaustively long storyline, but I did enjoy reading the miscellaneous events that made Candide change his way of thinking throughout the story。 In the beginning, he was rather naive and I was supposed to read it for a Swedish class, but I ended up reading it in English instead。 The book is certainly an interesting read。 It's by no means the best book I have had the pleasure of reading, but I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in literature。 It was slightly boring because of the exhaustively long storyline, but I did enjoy reading the miscellaneous events that made Candide change his way of thinking throughout the story。 In the beginning, he was rather naive and truly believed in Pangloss' principle that they lived in the "best of all possible worlds", but the more obstacles life put in his path and the more suffering he had to endure, the more he realised that there is a lot of evil in this world and that philosophising is not going to bring you any success。 Rather, hard work, physical work, is what is, in the end, going to be the only that will bring any type of success in this life。 You can clearly see how Voltaire is criticising Leibnitz and many other philosophers for not being productive or objective enough。 He clearly viewed philosophy as a matter lacking sense and objectivity。 At the very end, he said that you must "cultivate your own garden", meaning put in great physical effort and work to be able to be met with any type of success in life。 。。。more
