Summary

Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here and here

With introductions by Margaret Atwood and David Bradshaw。

Far in the future, the World Controllers have created the ideal society。 Through clever use of genetic engineering, brainwashing and recreational sex and drugs all its members are happy consumers。 Bernard Marx seems alone harbouring an ill-defined longing to break free。 A visit to one of the few remaining Savage Reservations where the old, imperfect life still continues, may be the cure for his distress。。。

Huxley's ingenious fantasy of the future sheds a blazing light on the present and is considered to be his most enduring masterpiece。

Is it a utopia or a dystopia? Well, long story short, this book isn't really about any sort of story。 The characters and occurrences are merely a means to present the two main ideas and some shades of them。 I was curious about the characters' viewpoints and transformations but didn't really care what would happen to them。 The thing that really kept me reading, aside from the intriguing fabric of society it introduces, was the author's playful tone and how he looked at his world。 So what is this Is it a utopia or a dystopia? Well, long story short, this book isn't really about any sort of story。 The characters and occurrences are merely a means to present the two main ideas and some shades of them。 I was curious about the characters' viewpoints and transformations but didn't really care what would happen to them。 The thing that really kept me reading, aside from the intriguing fabric of society it introduces, was the author's playful tone and how he looked at his world。 So what is this book about at its core? The best way to run the human world。 But 'the best' is a quite simplistic term for the huge concept at hand。 The book provides two alternatives out of many possible ones。 Although limited, they're really amazing in that they make you think about the fragile balance of all human communities and how much we are willing to pay in terms of freedom to have a stronger and long-lasting stability。 And it also touches the meaning factor especially seen through the eyes of the conditioned masses。 Having in mind that all the conditions set forth in the book are purely theoretical and that their plausibility has not been proved by any kind of experiment or research, let's for a moment humor them as a viable turn of history。 The writer presents us with two viewpoints。 One believes that the majority of people living in any given society would choose happiness and comfort over beauty and freedom。 The other one, while not claiming this to be particularly wrong, firmly believes that this is not the choice humans should make。 It says that there's beauty in free will and endless possibilities and they're worth the accompanying suffering。 You first need to choose a side to take this society as a utopia or otherwise。 Now, I'm not really sure which side I want to or should take here。 The only thing that seems to be true for now is we need to make sacrifices and idealism is not an accessible luxury when our societies keep getting bigger and greedier and more perplexing。 。。。more

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a modern classic that has invaded many a university syllabus - and for good reason。 The imagery is vivid, the prose neat, but most of all, the underlying philosophy is dense, while never becoming too over-stated。 Huxley does an admirable job of balancing his social statement with entertainment。 It is a novel that will stay with you long after you have finished reading。 Brave New World is an experience that often disturbs as a way of inculcating a message that Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a modern classic that has invaded many a university syllabus - and for good reason。 The imagery is vivid, the prose neat, but most of all, the underlying philosophy is dense, while never becoming too over-stated。 Huxley does an admirable job of balancing his social statement with entertainment。 It is a novel that will stay with you long after you have finished reading。 Brave New World is an experience that often disturbs as a way of inculcating a message that forward is not always better, and that progress is not always in the right direction。I gave Brave New World four stars out of five due to the disjointed narrative。 While it did not make it an unpleasant read, I found there was much that could have been explored, but was not given adequate attention。 Regardless, I would still recommend Brave New World to any who are interested in dystopian sci-fi, moral quandaries surrounding utilitarian philosophy, or just to add the insult 'epsilon semi-moron' to their lexicon。 。。。more

Uygarlık denilen çok uçlu bir aynada kendi yansımasını beğenmeleri, yapacakları davranışlara kadar belirlenen “soma” yakıtlı sınıfsal insanlarla; sözüm ona eskide kalmış yaşantıyla yoğrulmuşların heyecan verici fikir çatışması, gerçek sorgulama süreci Uygarlık kavramına ve gerekliliklerine dair sorular sormaya vesile olan bir ütopya örneği。

Took me ages to finish this。 It started really slowly, a lot of setting the scene and introducing the reader to The World State。 It really picks up in the second half, which I enjoyed a lot more as the interactions between the characters seemed far less disorderly - still chaotic in nature, but easier to follow。 The ending felt quite rushed but I guess it reflected the frenzy of the final moments in the novel。

First, this narrator did a great job。Next, this book is interesting and weird。 It's very well written。 I hate to leave it at that, but I'm not sure how to describe the story or what my take-away is。 First, this narrator did a great job。Next, this book is interesting and weird。 It's very well written。 I hate to leave it at that, but I'm not sure how to describe the story or what my take-away is。 。。。more

Se soubesse que esse livro era tão bom, teria lido antes。 Traz vários cenários que me fizeram questionar muitos pontos da minha moral e ética, ainda mantendo um fluxo fácil de ler e bastante empolgante。

I can’t say that I loved this book, but I believe it is right up there with Fahrenheit 451, 1984, and Animal Farm。 These books are warnings to all of us that we need to be aware of what is happening in our government and society。

Boring, didnt finish。 Picked up the book expecting anti-1984 but uncompelling narrative let down a novel that brings up some interesting ideas

Second reading (at least?)。。。 I think this book gets the accolades it does not because it is that amazing of a book but because several parts of it were prophetic。

A classic for a good reasonThis dystopia of a not so distant sounding future is a must read for the critical thinking mind。 The way how classes are portrayed and how a system plays tricks on the minds of a society is eye opening! If you struggle through certain passages - keep going! I'm the last man in to this Aldous-Huxley-loving party and I'd rather not write a detailed review here and earn the wrath/ admiration of everyone else already inside and grooving to his tunes。 It's safe to say Brave New World's blasted open a door for me that was erstwhile shut, for the lack of imagination or worse, out of pure ignorance。 Huxley's created a planet-sized shredder and pushed our world through it, back in the year 1932, and we're standing here still scrambling for the paper strips I'm the last man in to this Aldous-Huxley-loving party and I'd rather not write a detailed review here and earn the wrath/ admiration of everyone else already inside and grooving to his tunes。 It's safe to say Brave New World's blasted open a door for me that was erstwhile shut, for the lack of imagination or worse, out of pure ignorance。 Huxley's created a planet-sized shredder and pushed our world through it, back in the year 1932, and we're standing here still scrambling for the paper strips to come together and make sense。 But they don't。 They're not supposed to。 That's what he means。 I'm not sure I can go on living the way I have after I've read this 130-pager。 But, then again。 Sleeping's like a pop of Soma in this day and age, and tomorrow, when I put on my leash again and head back to work, I may cease to remember there was a different option offered through this book。 Enough said。 。。。more

If you look past the racially insensitive descriptions of the 'lesser' humans versus the 'alpha' humans (which at times is very difficult considering today's context and values), you will find an interesting take on a dystopian future wherein humans have moved past the sorrows of normal life, but instead, lead a life of absolute stability。 It is an interesting take on human values, and what one needs to sacrifice in order to reach a stable society。 If you look past the racially insensitive descriptions of the 'lesser' humans versus the 'alpha' humans (which at times is very difficult considering today's context and values), you will find an interesting take on a dystopian future wherein humans have moved past the sorrows of normal life, but instead, lead a life of absolute stability。 It is an interesting take on human values, and what one needs to sacrifice in order to reach a stable society。 。。。more

Started and stopped this book a number of times。 Okay。 Sci fi is not really my favorite。 Alright to think about a world similar to one like in the book 1984 where we are programmed to act a certain way, eat certain things, etc。 in the brave new world revised interesting some things like over population which was predicted a number of years ago which has had and will have negative impacts on the world and earth we know。

I'm not sure how to feel about this book。 On one hand it stands as an interesting thought piece about how an engineered society can be utterly happy yet terribly frightening。 The various methods and reasons for conditioning/ poisoning embryos to achieve differing levels of mental ability was interesting。 Particularly the bit about alcohol being used to specifically control infant development for the negative。 Pretty poignant for a book written in 1932, considering fetal alcohol syndrome wasn't u I'm not sure how to feel about this book。 On one hand it stands as an interesting thought piece about how an engineered society can be utterly happy yet terribly frightening。 The various methods and reasons for conditioning/ poisoning embryos to achieve differing levels of mental ability was interesting。 Particularly the bit about alcohol being used to specifically control infant development for the negative。 Pretty poignant for a book written in 1932, considering fetal alcohol syndrome wasn't understood until the 1970's。 I also apprciated the comment on teaching to memorize facts vs teaching for understanding (the hypno conditioning stuff)。 On the other hand, it's full of racist and sexist terminology and ideas throughout。 The only reason I continued the story after the first chunk in the beginning was because it's considered a classic and I wanted to see why。 。。。more
