This series was really fun。 The story is one of the weirder ones Junji Ito has come up with, but the art inside is absolutely stunning and a great example of his ability to create page turners。 Putting the book down is a real challenge。

What did I just read? This was such a wild ride。 And like, the mind of this author。 Like, who would have thought about making a horror about fish。

pretty good and it was solid, but i felt the story itself was rushed。 the spacing and pace of the story could've been executed better。 pretty good and it was solid, but i felt the story itself was rushed。 the spacing and pace of the story could've been executed better。 。。。more

Not my favorite story。 Very disturbing art though。

This is probably the most creepy, twisted manga I've ever read。 The art work is on another level。 Definitely check it out, if you like horror。 This is probably the most creepy, twisted manga I've ever read。 The art work is on another level。 Definitely check it out, if you like horror。 。。。more

The premise and body horror in this story from Junji Ito were especially intense。 Once again, Junji Ito created a story that was compelling, mysterious, shocking, and a true page-turner。 When I started the story I was honestly a bit confused, but I really enjoyed learning about what caused - or what could have caused - the horror that takes place in the story。 Once the causes of the walking fish thingys are discussed and speculated, I think it adds another eerie layer of horror to everything goi The premise and body horror in this story from Junji Ito were especially intense。 Once again, Junji Ito created a story that was compelling, mysterious, shocking, and a true page-turner。 When I started the story I was honestly a bit confused, but I really enjoyed learning about what caused - or what could have caused - the horror that takes place in the story。 Once the causes of the walking fish thingys are discussed and speculated, I think it adds another eerie layer of horror to everything going on。 As usual, upon finishing this story I went and bought another of Juni Ito's work cause I can't get enough! 。。。more

This was my second one of Junji Ito’s, and no one does weird like he does!! I was definitely grossed out a couple of times! Enough to not wanna eat seafood for a little while。 😂I loved the bonus short stories at the end。 It was a nice touch。

Plot is a little all over the place。 The art is gnarly and horrific。

Surprisingly enough, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this story much more than Uzumaki。 Which feels like a first, because everyone adores Uzumaki。 After all, how could you not? It’s got creative brilliance, pretty spirals, and body horror galore。 Judging from my first glimpse of Gyo (I flicked through it in a bookstore before buying it a few weeks later), it looked like a blend of sharknado and gore, which sounded excellent to me。 I got to reading it and lord, I was exactly right。 But it’s so much Surprisingly enough, I actually thoroughly enjoyed this story much more than Uzumaki。 Which feels like a first, because everyone adores Uzumaki。 After all, how could you not? I’ve never read a manga before and was looking into as far as a visual narrative to go along with research for my thesis, but it was entertaining。 I just kinda felt like the story was a little。。。unresolved? I don’t know if that’s usual for stories like this, but I found it frustrating, I felt like I was left with more questions than answers。 The artwork was stunning and the body horror that Ito incorporates was quite dramatic, but the plot itself left me needing more。

Denise

I’m really surprised I finished reading this within an hour and a half! Really disturbing and disgusting but I loved every second of it! Junji Ito really knows how to come up with unique horror stories!

Monster attack? Mutants? The reader is pulled from one scene to the next as Tadashi and Kaori try to survive from the horror that is chasing them from the sea。 Ito is a master of his craft and this animal attack/outbreak story is very worth reading。 The story is understandable, the characters are sympathetic, and art will haunt you when you look at a fish and wonder, if they are going to come for you。 I highly recommend this manga。I give this manga a Five out of Five stars。 I get nothing for my review and I was given this manga as a gift。 。。。more

I'm not much of a fan of gory bits but I did like the idea of weird, dead fish invasion。 It's pretty cool。 I also really liked the main characters too, Tadashi and Kaori。 I find their relationship really cute although I didn't like the seemingly stereotypical portrayal of a whiny girlfriend。 I can't really say what my favorite chapters are because it is a spontaneous story but I did like the twists and turns as well as the idea if people getting into the "legs" where the fishes once were。 However, I can't buy the idea about the germs and them getting into the system and just blows out everything。 The WW2 theory isn't that great either, I think it could still use some expanding。 I also didn't like the circus that much。 I don't think it added to the plot, it's just weird and made it even more confusing since the magician was telling Tadashi that the true nature of the germ can be found when it is aflame。 Makes you think that something spiritual is in play instead of some science mumbo-jumbo。 Either way, I prefer a single theory。Overall, this has a great concept and an enjoyable read。 The horror in here lies in the smell of rotten fish/flesh which I'm not that familiar with so it's not very effective。 But I will definitely remember it when I come across my mom gutting a fish! The Enigma of Amigara FaultThis is a one shot at the end of the book and I really liked this one。 It kinda has 'Uzumaki' vibes on it in a sense that it's weird and hypnotic。 The ending has a really great pay off too! And even if this is short, I kinda feel sorry for the two hikers who fell in love in the mountains。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Gyo features some very nasty body horror and a very intriguing plot, but there are an insane amount of plot holes。 As a whole, I was never able to disregard the point that you are supposed to believe that the thousands of machines were still fully operational after being submerged in water for such a long time。 Anyway, it is a very fun read by Junji Ito。

This is the type of read that haunts you。 Set originally in Okinawa, Japan。 The horror begins almost in the absurd, but the strange and outlandish possibilities somehow become all too real and claustrophobic as the manga continues。What we are left with is a bittersweet tale of horror, loss, and the extent that people are willing to go to for their own reasons。Honestly, a really good showing by Junji Ito in the horror genre, and one I would highly recommend to those who enjoy horror in all of its This is the type of read that haunts you。 Set originally in Okinawa, Japan。 The horror begins almost in the absurd, but the strange and outlandish possibilities somehow become all too real and claustrophobic as the manga continues。What we are left with is a bittersweet tale of horror, loss, and the extent that people are willing to go to for their own reasons。Honestly, a really good showing by Junji Ito in the horror genre, and one I would highly recommend to those who enjoy horror in all of its forms。 It's evocative and sometimes visually terrifying, making it a tale that will linger at the back of your mind, as some of the best horror does。 。。。more

the art was amazing (deeply unsettling, but extremely talented) the only issue was the actual story — it just wasn’t developed enough, we didn’t see much despite everything that happened。

After reading two other Ito graphic novels, I was sadly disappointed with this one。 Not that I am completely against comics that are mostly action, but this hardly had enough dialogue and backstory to be interesting。 Most of the graphic novel are pictures of the fish with legs running around。 Yes, it sounds ridiculous and, dare I say, it kind of was。

Junji Ito is one of the gold standard horror authors in manga, and that much is certain。 Nevertheless, Gyo, while deeply disturbing and intriguing in concept alone, isn't nearly as cohesive as his other work。The plot focuses on a dysfunctional couple who stumble upon walking fish that carry a lingering death stench。 Saying any more would be spoiling it for some, but to be honest, you'll still end up getting the most out of it even if I did tell you。 The plot stalls at times and goes way too fast Junji Ito is one of the gold standard horror authors in manga, and that much is certain。 Nevertheless, Gyo, while deeply disturbing and intriguing in concept alone, isn't nearly as cohesive as his other work。The plot focuses on a dysfunctional couple who stumble upon walking fish that carry a lingering death stench。 Saying any more would be spoiling it for some, but to be honest, you'll still end up getting the most out of it even if I did tell you。 The plot stalls at times and goes way too fast at others, usually without giving enough information to keep interest going。All this to say, Ito still makes incredible artwork。 Each panel has this overwhelming feeling of dread, and as ridiculous as the body horror is conceptually, the illustrations are still fascinatingly grotesque。 I recommend Gyo for people who are diehard fans of Ito's work, but maybe not for people interested but unsure。 Definitely worth a read if you're into horror manga。(This book also includes the infamous 'this is my hole!' short story, which is deeply unsettling and gets a 5 out of 5 stars on its own。 Read it if you can。) 。。。more
