Summary

First UK publication for this modern classic

'Moving, tender, beautifully drawn, painfully honest and probably the most important graphic novel since Jimmy Corrigan。' NEIL GAIMAN

'Blankets is a classic in every genre it touches。' STEPHEN CHBOSKY, author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower

'One of the greatest love stories ever written and surely the best ever drawn。' JOSS WHEDON

Wrapped in the snowfall of a blustery Midwestern winter, Blankets is the tale of two brothers growing up in rural isolation, and of the budding romance between two young lovers。 A tale of security and discovery, of playfulness and tragedy, of a fall from grace and the origins of faith, Blankets is a profound and utterly beautiful work。

This was a great book。 BEAUTIFUL cartooning。 A great story and I’m sure relatable to many people。 It didn’t quite strike me as much as I thought it would as I didn’t completely relate。 But it was still a beautiful book and a graphic novel I would keep on my shelf for a long time。

There is so much to love about this。It's beautiful, raw, heartfelt and emotional。The illustration is gorgeous and it’s all around a great read。I wanted to love it。 There’s so much to take from it! Sadly, though I didn’t connect the way I wanted too, which is more a me thing then it is a book thing。 Hard as I try, graphic novels almost always seem to fall short on me :(Still, I think it’s beautiful and worth all the praise even if I myself didn’t quite fall in love with the pages。 There is so much to love about this。It's beautiful, raw, heartfelt and emotional。The illustration is gorgeous and it’s all around a great read。I wanted to love it。 There’s so much to take from it! Тонкая, пронзительная история и рисунок, который заставит полюбить графические романы。

Although the story is something relatively ordinary, the delicacy in which it is told would make it an extraordinary one -contradictory as it may seem。 It is deeply touching in ways I didn't expect it to be。And yet, the story was not what I loved most from that novel, but the drawings。 Far from hyperrealist artists, Thompson is able to convey so much with so little that I had to revisit every single page。 There are so many details, so much information in each strip that it would be a top 3 just Although the story is something relatively ordinary, the delicacy in which it is told would make it an extraordinary one -contradictory as it may seem。 It is deeply touching in ways I didn't expect it to be。And yet, the story was not what I loved most from that novel, but the drawings。 Far from hyperrealist artists, Thompson is able to convey so much with so little that I had to revisit every single page。 There are so many details, so much information in each strip that it would be a top 3 just because of that。I can't say how much I recommend that you read Blankets。 。。。more

A beautifully illustrated book about first love, family, and christian deconstruction。 A Graphic novel that truly utilizes its medium and gives room for the art to be abstract in order to illustrate emotions that words can't entirely portray。 A beautifully illustrated book about first love, family, and christian deconstruction。 A Graphic novel that truly utilizes its medium and gives room for the art to be abstract in order to illustrate emotions that words can't entirely portray。 。。。more

I was not expecting this graphic novel would be so deep。 It can produce so many conversations。

A poignant coming-of-age graphic novel。 It does an amazing job showing family relationships, first loves, and grappling with one's faith, oftentimes with a dreamlike style。 A poignant coming-of-age graphic novel。 It does an amazing job showing family relationships, first loves, and grappling with one's faith, oftentimes with a dreamlike style。 。。。more

This book was amazingly written and illustrated。 It told stories so well and was a very compelling read。 It was thought provoking and spoke truth to experiences everyone goes through in one way or another while also being surreal at times。

Danger

Anxiety, grief, faith, first love, and all the other terrifying aspects of growing up are laid bare in this very personal graphic novel。 A sad story, but not in an over-the-top kind of way, and like life, it still has its moments of hope and humanity。 The B+W art is perfect for the subject matter。

I haven't read a romance book any better than this。 This books makes me feel like John Green is really overrated。 The story is fucking awesome , the meticulous details , the exquisite works of art , the grieving ending that just leaves you in tears。。this book is too good。 The way Craig expressed the feelings of being in love , the sorrow of living in a fucked up town with fucked up parents and circumstances that make it hard for 2 people to hold up their relationship its just so fucking good。 I haven't read a romance book any better than this。 This books makes me feel like John Green is really overrated。 The story is fucking awesome , the meticulous details , the exquisite works of art , the grieving ending that just leaves you in tears。。this book is too good。 The way Craig expressed the feelings of being in love , the sorrow of living in a fucked up town with fucked up parents and circumstances that make it hard for 2 people to hold up their relationship its just so fucking good。 。。。more

There was so much good about this book。The artwork is beautiful。 The simplicity of the black and white drawings seemed particularly striking to portray the Midwestern winter/wasteland landscape。 The book could easily lend to a kaleidoscope of colors (esp。 on some of the larger mural type pages), but the black and white seems a better choice to instead almost mute what might otherwise be an overwhelming abundance of artistic emotions to process。 I thought the author did a fantastic job of represe There was so much good about this book。The artwork is beautiful。 The simplicity of the black and white drawings seemed particularly striking to portray the Midwestern winter/wasteland landscape。 The book could easily lend to a kaleidoscope of colors (esp。 on some of the larger mural type pages), but the black and white seems a better choice to instead almost mute what might otherwise be an overwhelming abundance of artistic emotions to process。 I thought the author did a fantastic job of representing all of the complex characters (ranging from children of abuse, to disenfranchised teens, to overwhelmed/overworked adults, to selfish young parents, to religious zealots) with a sense of grace not often found in autobiographical works。 Excellent on so many fronts。 And while I very much enjoyed this as an adult, I wish this was in my orbit when i was a teenager or YA - i think it would definitely hit a nerve for that age range。 。。。more

Raw and courageous revelation of the experience of growing up stricken with religious conservatism。 The result of American Christian culture, its shaming, its use of fear, its warping of sexuality, its dehumanization, is on full display in this work in an indelible coming of age story brimming with character。 Painful to read and painful to put down, this story is now thoroughly etched on my heart。

Blurb doesn't mention this but also includes sooo much religion。 For that reason I'll skip the stars i think it would influence my rating too much。 Blurb doesn't mention this but also includes sooo much religion。 For that reason I'll skip the stars i think it would influence my rating too much。 。。。more

This was just inherently bad, I got nothing out of this book。 It was just a white straight man wining on for almost 600 pages。

In often evocative images, Craig Thompson tells the story of his troubled childhood and most significant teenage love, set against a frozen midwestern landscape。This melancholy--sometimes traumatic--graphic memoir effectively conveys the full range of the author's emotions: helplessness, guilt, infatuation, loneliness, connection, inner conflict, and even, rarely, joy。 Though it felt cohesive while I was reading, in retrospect, I'm not entirely certain how all the components are supposed to add In often evocative images, Craig Thompson tells the story of his troubled childhood and most significant teenage love, set against a frozen midwestern landscape。This melancholy--sometimes traumatic--graphic memoir effectively conveys the full range of the author's emotions: helplessness, guilt, infatuation, loneliness, connection, inner conflict, and even, rarely, joy。 Though it felt cohesive while I was reading, in retrospect, I'm not entirely certain how all the components are supposed to add up。 But then again, I read the whole thing in one sitting, so if I had taken more time with it, perhaps it would have gelled for me more。 Either way, its individual strands are effective and memorable。 。。。more

4。5 Really well written and does a great job at telling more than a love story- but a story following a whole person who experiences a love story。 Many moments in this book feel sacred, slow, and forever。 Nevertheless, the moments are temporary and this book shows how this too can be beautiful。

Takin

The only word I can find to describe this is *tender*。 Beautifully drawn。

hmmm。much of thompson's graphic memoir is a meditation on his struggle with his christian faith。 and most chapters begin with recollections of his childhood relationship with his brother。 but the majority of this book is about his first love。life is messy and full of things, but i couldn't figure out why thompson chose to weave together these separate parts of his life。 it was sometimes odd to go back and forth between 9-year-old craig sharing a bed with his little brother and having adventures hmmm。much of thompson's graphic memoir is a meditation on his struggle with his christian faith。 and most chapters begin with recollections of his childhood relationship with his brother。 but the majority of this book is about his first love。life is messy and full of things, but i couldn't figure out why thompson chose to weave together these separate parts of his life。 it was sometimes odd to go back and forth between 9-year-old craig sharing a bed with his little brother and having adventures in the snow, and 17-year-old craig grappling with desire and heartbreak for the first time。sure, these were two intense relationships of his youth, and both of them tested thompson's faith in some way。 but there didn't seem to be much else to tie it all together。 maybe the warmth of shared blankets is meant to be enough。the art, and the quiet, snowy atmosphere are really nice。 it made me feel the chill of a wisconsin winter, and long for a hot mug of tea & the thaw of spring。 。。。more

Very touching story with beautiful illustrations。 Another winner from Craig Thompson。

This book made me feel simultaneously wistful and melancholy。 An honest and sincere coming of age story that felt like a warm hug at times, and sometimes like a hole in my chest。 Would very much recommend!

I had no idea what this was about when I picked it up, only had heard it was a top graphic novel and must-read。 It is so beautifully written and touching。 It also feels more real than other biographies I have read in the past, it has a way of connecting to the reader, unlike other books。

This book is an illustrated memoir (with details and names changed) following the author's high school self as he navigates his first love, coming to terms with his relationship with Christianity, and the slipping relationships with his family。 Thompson highlights the sacredness of physical touch, winter, and the unknown with some beautiful full-page imaginative and evocative black and white illustrations。 The book's length seemed intimidating at first but it's easy to read and I finished it in This book is an illustrated memoir (with details and names changed) following the author's high school self as he navigates his first love, coming to terms with his relationship with Christianity, and the slipping relationships with his family。 Thompson highlights the sacredness of physical touch, winter, and the unknown with some beautiful full-page imaginative and evocative black and white illustrations。 The book's length seemed intimidating at first but it's easy to read and I finished it in two sittings! I really liked the way that Thompson interwove his experiences with coming to terms with his spiritual and religious beliefs throughout the book。 There was a lot of emphasis on physical touch in the story about his first love, and I would have loved to see a bit more about Craig's and Raina's relationship through exploring their emotions and personalities。 *Spoilers ahead* However, this may be the point- as the character Craig's infatuation with Raina seemed to serve as a symbol of him finding an escape from all the colliding and difficult internal struggles he was having with his spirituality and family。 It felt like Craig fell in love Raina without really knowing who she was, almost falling in love with the idea of her before he really got to know who she was。 It almost felt like that was what kept them together- their desire to stay in those sacred moments of physical touch, and they really didn't know too much about each other in the end- it felt heartbreaking at times, their desire for closeness, and that taught me a lot about them as characters。 I really enjoyed the ending where Craig is walking through the snow, finding meaning in the impermanence of life, relationships, and winter。 。。。more
