Summary

A New York Times Bestseller

The riveting story of a heroic girl who fights for her belief that water should be for everyone。

Minni lives in the poorest part of Mumbai, where access to water is limited to a few hours a day and the communal taps have long lines。 Lately, though, even that access is threatened by severe water shortages and thieves who are stealing this precious commodity--an act that Minni accidentally witnesses one night。 Meanwhile, in the high-rise building where she just started to work, she discovers that water streams out of every faucet and there's even a rooftop swimming pool。 What Minni also discovers there is one of the water mafia bosses。 Now she must decide whether to expose him and risk her job and maybe her life。 How did something as simple as access to water get so complicated?

It's difficult to imagine living in a place that doesn't have accessible clean water。 Minni lives in India with that reality every day。 She grows up as she comes to realize the things her mother does for their family and takes brave steps to help。 The note from the author gives further information about clean water access around the world。 I have a deeper gratitude for the water from my faucet。 It's difficult to imagine living in a place that doesn't have accessible clean water。 Minni lives in India with that reality every day。 She grows up as she comes to realize the things her mother does for their family and takes brave steps to help。 The note from the author gives further information about clean water access around the world。 I have a deeper gratitude for the water from my faucet。 。。。more

A great middle grade read that explores water inequity in India (and around the world)。 We follow plucky Meena who has to take on more household responsibilities when her mother falls ill and her brother has to suddenly go live in the country, all while balancing schooling and a job。 Through it all, Meena learns that she has a supportive community of friends, family and neighbors (and a neighborhood pup!) and that she can change the world and chase her dreams。

Really great story and fast read with Ri as it was highly recommended by our teen librarian。 The book is not deep but does touch on some serious issues such as water mafia and the privilege of going to school。 I would definitely read more by this author。

Fabulous read! Great juvenile fiction。 Helps kids understand and appreciate that not all children are born into life with the privilege of fresh drinkable tap water。 A really horrendous notion in 2023。 15 million people on the globe do not have access to a fresh water source。 Fresh water is the singular basis for human survival。 Mind blowing。

read it for school。I understand the impact this book has and the information it spreads on the water crisis, but dislike the characters。 It was a very straight forward book which usually I'm happy with but at this reading level, it was not for me。 read it for school。I understand the impact this book has and the information it spreads on the water crisis, but dislike the characters。 It was a very straight forward book which usually I'm happy with but at this reading level, it was not for me。 。。。more

Considering how I felt while reading this,, I think I have officially aged out of reading middle grade books。 It is a solidly-written book, so I think I would have liked it when I was 7 or 8。 (far past that age now lol)

This is such a powerful book! Thirst can have so many meanings besides dehydration as this book so eloquently shows。 I loved Minni’s poetry at the end of many of the chapters。 I loved how it showed the importance of education。 I pretty much loved everything about it! A great middle grade read about water shortages and what even young people can do to help。"Listen to me! This novel, while set in another country, discusses themes that are consistent across the globe: poverty, prejudice, and identity。 These characters may face different struggles than many Americans, but the themes are the same。
