It was a little slow to start bc you get everyone’s perspective but that just makes it so much better as it goes。 It was heartbreaking and made me sick to my stomach but also heartfelt and just so human idk

WOW。 Just wow。 I loved the heart and soul of this book so much I cried when I finished it。 Cannot wait to start Us Against You。 💕

Wow。 Amazing writing, the story was captivating from beginning to end! It got dark, so definitely not a great choice for everyone depending on topics you avoid。 It made you feel part of the town and the emotions of the characters as they struggled and faced challenges。 Looking forward to reading the rest!

Was good but not great。 Too long to get to the point of the story then solid then too long to get to the next event then solid。 Good wrap up but you certainly don't feel great about the characters。 Was good but not great。 Too long to get to the point of the story then solid then too long to get to the next event then solid。 Good wrap up but you certainly don't feel great about the characters。 。。。more

This is the most earth shattering, soul crushing book about human experiences that exists。 It's a re-read for me and I want to read it a thousand times。 The way Backman knows his characters better than I know myself is outstanding。 Every single one down to the most tertiary character has more personality and depth than half the main characters in books nowadays。 Just a masterpiece This is the most earth shattering, soul crushing book about human experiences that exists。 It's a re-read for me and I want to read it a thousand times。 The way Backman knows his characters better than I know myself is outstanding。 Every single one down to the most tertiary character has more personality and depth than half the main characters in books nowadays。 Just a masterpiece 。。。more

Well written but too many characters to keep up with。 It seemed a bit long and I got to the point I would have liked it to end but kept reading because I had to find out how it ended。

З усією повагою та любв’ю до Бакмана - ця книжка занадто сентиментальна。 І якщо в сюжетній лінії головної проблеми твору це доцільно, то в інших побутових ситуація було трохи смішно читати, як всі плачуть。

Loved the characters and how it shows that everything is complicated。 Life is hard and messy and it captures the complexity of feelings, relationships and team。

A somewhat slow burner of a book that is definitely worth the wait! I often worry when reading a more popular novel that it won’t quite be worth the hype but this more than deserves the praise it gets。 Beautiful and thought provoking I was hooked on how the story unfolded for every single character。 For anyone yet to read I will say that the first third of the book is slow at times and there is a lot of character building however the plot that follows is amazing! I started this because I remember reading "A Man Called Ove" and liking it very much。 I can't find my review (guess it was too long ago) so I'm going to go back and read it again。I got half way through this book (entirely based on the glory of extreme violence in hockey) so I'm going to gracefully back out of elaborating on my opinion。 The only reason why I stuck with it so long was I knew this man could write—surely the storyline would evolve out of the knuckle dragging level but I got tired of I started this because I remember reading "A Man Called Ove" and liking it very much。 I can't find my review (guess it was too long ago) so I'm going to go back and read it again。I got half way through this book (entirely based on the glory of extreme violence in hockey) so I'm going to gracefully back out of elaborating on my opinion。 The only reason why I stuck with it so long was I knew this man could write—surely the storyline would evolve out of the knuckle dragging level but I got tired of waiting。I'm a 10th generation Canadian so know & love my share of hockey nuts but don't know anyone like the freaks in Beartown。 The first star was for character development and second star was for the writing。 。。。more

What a beautifully written book。 I listened to this one in audible and loved the narration。 Some lines are so so beautiful。 It’s a dark book and so unlike a man called Ove。 Being a parent myself, lines written about working moms and what they feel for their kids felt a bit more deep than it would have otherwise。 This book leaves no mark of what to expect in sequel so am wondering if that’s how book should have ended。

Every now and again you come across a book that is completely and utterly believable。 It’s brilliantly written and immersed me effortlessly into small town hockey life。 Weirdly a few days before I started this book on a visit to Sweden I went to my first ice hockey match。So I was completely sold on the plot not knowing beforehand what the book was actually about till it dropped through my door I’m a huge fan of Backmans writing。 I love the way he ramps up the peril before it happens。 I noticed t Every now and again you come across a book that is completely and utterly believable。 It’s brilliantly written and immersed me effortlessly into small town hockey life。 Weirdly a few days before I started this book on a visit to Sweden I went to my first ice hockey match。So I was completely sold on the plot not knowing beforehand what the book was actually about till it dropped through my door I’m a huge fan of Backmans writing。 I love the way he ramps up the peril before it happens。 I noticed the same technique in a man called Otto I think you probably need to be a sport lover to read this though。 。。。more

This is the second book I read from Fredrik Backman, and loved it as well。 I will make a couple of comments, I read (Kindle) and also did audiobook for this book。 It is a hard book to follow as an audiobook based on the writing style。 As a parent this book cut deep。 Kira was a great character and I identified with her incredibly so。 The story is raw and honestly was a great book to set-up for a redemption story *hopefully*。 I know little of hockey but you can insert any passion that tends to def This is the second book I read from Fredrik Backman, and loved it as well。 I will make a couple of comments, I read (Kindle) and also did audiobook for this book。 It is a hard book to follow as an audiobook based on the writing style。 As a parent this book cut deep。 Kira was a great character and I identified with her incredibly so。 The story is raw and honestly was a great book to set-up for a redemption story *hopefully*。 I know little of hockey but you can insert any passion that tends to define small towns like that。 Recommend。 。。。more

Having read several several of Backman’s book in the past, this was not the story I was expecting from him, but I loved it as much as his others! He has a way of developing characters that you invest in, and this story was no exception。 You don’t have to be a hockey fan to appreciate the story。 I found it really picked up a 1/3 of the way in。

This is a dense book with a slow build。 I almost thought it was too slow, until the carefully crafted characters and town became more and more 'real' and I was then engrossed in the story。 This is a moving story - in good and difficult ways - and is an important story about teens (and parents) and choices and moral compass and friendship and athletics。 Anyone in a small town with pride in their athletics will relate to this story - the good and the bad。 This is a dense book with a slow build。 I almost thought it was too slow, until the carefully crafted characters and town became more and more 'real' and I was then engrossed in the story。 This is a moving story - in good and difficult ways - and is an important story about teens (and parents) and choices and moral compass and friendship and athletics。 Anyone in a small town with pride in their athletics will relate to this story - the good and the bad。 。。。more

God damn, another Backman Banger。 A little slow to start, but that’s how he builds those characters that you just fall in love with。 The man knows how to write a story that’ll bring me to tears。 While I might take a short break from Beartown just to make some other progress on my TBR, I’m so happy to know I have two more books in this town。

while the writing was gorgeous, it did get a tad bit too sentimental but still, wow。 made me feel the things that FNL and follies did。

I really like this book。 I was a bit worried, at first, that I would struggle connecting with the story being so heavily hockey centered, but I found that I was drawn into this small town and I really felt an understanding of these characters rather quickly。 I was really impressed with how well the author created such richness in this small town。 I really felt like I understood this setting and I could feel where this setting and the mentality in beartown would come to play into the story。 I als I really like this book。 I was a bit worried, at first, that I would struggle connecting with the story being so heavily hockey centered, but I found that I was drawn into this small town and I really felt an understanding of these characters rather quickly。 I was really impressed with how well the author created such richness in this small town。 I really felt like I understood this setting and I could feel where this setting and the mentality in beartown would come to play into the story。 I also really liked how realistic and grounded the characters all seemed。 They felt like genuine people and I was drawn into getting to know them more and discover more and more about them through the story。 I was impressed with how well balanced the book seemed, especially considering how the story switches perspectives。 I felt like that format really helped paint a full picture of events and really added to the tension and drama of the story。 And I was very impressed with how this story handled heavy topics。 It was honest and brutal at times, but also so much compassion and love from friends and family I really appreciate how upfront (and still subtle and authentic) this story was about pain and trauma。 It was also really nice having dimensionality to the main villain of the story without trying to paint him in a compassionate or forgiving way, but rather showing the ways that he, and many people in his life, have led him down this path and have made him into this sort of person that he is revealed to be throughout the book。There is a lot of great foreshadowing in this book and I feel like the book really builds and takes the time to invite us in before jumping too deep into the plot/drama。 The story really kept me in the moment and held my attention and even though parts of the story are predictable, I think the author does a great job with the emotional resonance of the story and still creating tension。This book is a decent size, but it somehow still felt too short in some aspects and there were characters that I really wished we got to see more of and that I wanted to spend more time with。 While this story fully works as a stand-alone, I'm very excited to step back into this world and read the rest of the series。4。5 rounded up 。。。more

I put this book off for so long。 The topic of toxic sport teams and the community ramifications isn’t my favorite genre, but the author does an empathetic job and the story was worth the read。

Wow。 When I read the first chapter, I had to close the book and put it away until I was mentally prepared for it。 It was a little bit of a slow start, and there are a lot of characters to keep track of, but the themes in this story are all too real and powerful。 The prominent idea that parents can’t protect their children was a little anxiety inducing for me, but this was good, and I’m glad I came back to it!

Jenn

I had heard such amazing things about this book, and honestly, for the first 30%, I was wondering what people were talking about。 Beartown definitely starts slow and with the alternating chapters of grown men obsessing about hockey, I wasn’t sure it was for me。 I’m glad I kept reading because the second half was enthralling and heartbreaking。 I’ll definitely be checking out the next two in the series!
