Summary

Widely thought of as the best book Terry Pratchett ever wrote, this is a story of a Nation, a story of a friendship, a story of growing up and the truths we must learn。 It is epic in every sense 。 。 。

Prepare for the world to be turned upside down 。 。 。

For Mau, halfway between boy and man, it happens when a great wave destroys his entire village。 For Daphne, it’s when the same wave crashes her ship into the island that was once Mau’s home。 Everything they once had is now so far away, lost to distance and time。

But when Daphne stops trying to shoot Mau (she did apologise for it), and instead uses a salvaged invitation card to invite him to tea, they discover a new home can be theirs。

And then people start arriving on the island – some very good, some very bad。 And it’s soon clear that Daphne and Mau must fight for their Nation。

Then a discovery is made that will change the entire world forever 。 。 。

In this fantastic book, Pratchett explores the idea of adulthood, community, nation, colonialism, gender roles, rules, good and evil, and God。 In about 350 riveting pages。When a tsunami wipes out his island community, Mau - the boy who would have completed becoming a man if he had gotten back in time - is now the chief of a deserted island Nation。 But then he discovers someone else - Daphne, a survivor of a shipwrecked English boat。The two learn to communicate, and grow to become friends and tru In this fantastic book, Pratchett explores the idea of adulthood, community, nation, colonialism, gender roles, rules, good and evil, and God。 In about 350 riveting pages。When a tsunami wipes out his island community, Mau - the boy who would have completed becoming a man if he had gotten back in time - is now the chief of a deserted island Nation。 But then he discovers someone else - Daphne, a survivor of a shipwrecked English boat。The two learn to communicate, and grow to become friends and trusted companions, as refugees - and raiders - flock to the Nation。 Action-packed and sometimes brutal in its unflinching look at Mau's pain, the re-develooment of the Nation had me spellbound。The discussion of colonialism was on point。 At one point, a character points out that Europeans could have never been to the island before - because there's still gold on it。 This is hilarious because it's true。The book has a lot of really funny stuff going on。 There's also a search for the true King of England somehow tied into all of this, and raider cannibals, and a visit to the after-world。 There is never a dull moment。The book ends bittersweet。 It is the perfect ending, because it leaves you wishing otherwise。This is a gorgeous book for readers of all ages。 But kid readers should probably have some maturity, since there's stuff about childbirth, beer, and breastfeeding。 I would have read it as a 9 year old, only fully understood it at 13, and only fully felt it at 30。5/5 stars。 Highly recommend。 Just read it。 。。。more

I haven't read Terry Pratchett for a bit so this was a rather nostalgic read; supposedly YA but of course, with Pratchett, everything appeals for 0 - 90 year olds so there's not much difference to any other novel, certainly no less hard hitting and definitely not less violence。 Of course, not everything works out with a happy ending, this is Terry Pratchett after all。 Rather, everything works out as it has to do and the reader is left knowing they have been on a journey with more than just the c I haven't read Terry Pratchett for a bit so this was a rather nostalgic read; supposedly YA but of course, with Pratchett, everything appeals for 0 - 90 year olds so there's not much difference to any other novel, certainly no less hard hitting and definitely not less violence。 Of course, not everything works out with a happy ending, this is Terry Pratchett after all。 Rather, everything works out as it has to do and the reader is left knowing they have been on a journey with more than just the characters。 As is the way with the great man。 。。。more

I was expecting dynamic, funny even a bit cheesy adventure story line but what we get is an amazing book that touches on dealing with grief and loss。 By the time I was reading it, I lost someone and numerous times I felt just like Mau searching for answers。 Just like him I gave up after a while and thought it’s just a gods awful game of dice。 But as in the book as long as you surround yourself with people to support you and guide you out of the shadows, all will be alright。 Don’t give up on hope I was expecting dynamic, funny even a bit cheesy adventure story line but what we get is an amazing book that touches on dealing with grief and loss。 By the time I was reading it, I lost someone and numerous times I felt just like Mau searching for answers。 Just like him I gave up after a while and thought it’s just a gods awful game of dice。 But as in the book as long as you surround yourself with people to support you and guide you out of the shadows, all will be alright。 Don’t give up on hope! 。。。more

Rather than a world riding through space on the back of 4 elephants and 1 giant turtle, this world is not dissimilar to our own - call it an alternative history perhaps。 There are no wizards, there is no magic, but there is an element of mysticism (I might argue about my terminology there, but that's what came to me right now, so that's how it's going to stay)。 There are the occasional moments where the reader might find things amusing, but it's not a humorous book。 It's science fiction, and it' Rather than a world riding through space on the back of 4 elephants and 1 giant turtle, this world is not dissimilar to our own - call it an alternative history perhaps。 There are no wizards, there is no magic, but there is an element of mysticism (I might argue about my terminology there, but that's what came to me right now, so that's how it's going to stay)。 There are the occasional moments where the reader might find things amusing, but it's not a humorous book。 It's science fiction, and it's excellent。 Pratchett does what he always does well - he makes social comment, and he gets it absolutely right with the thoughts of his characters。 Another priceless Pratchett!Oh yes - one wonderful quote that I recorded along the way:Mad-root tubers had to be roasted before they could be eaten, though, or else you went mad。 Pigs ate them raw, but pigs didn't notice if they were mad or not。 。。。more

I wouldn't have thought that PTerry could write a bad book。 。 。 Well。 This one isn't truly bad, but it sure is moving slow, and not ringing many chimes。 Should work, but it's not, so far anyway。 I'm setting it aside for now。 Standalone faux-historical British Empire novel。 I wouldn't have thought that PTerry could write a bad book。 。 。 Well。 This one isn't truly bad, but it sure is moving slow, and not ringing many chimes。 Should work, but it's not, so far anyway。 I'm setting it aside for now。 Standalone faux-historical British Empire novel。 。。。more

This is a quirky but well told story about growing up。 Mau is left alone after a massive wave destroys the village on his island。 After he sends all of the bodies of the villagers into the deep current so their spirits can be free he finds out he is not alone on the island。 The story continues as Mau and his newfound friend try and survive and rebuild while searching their souls and surroundings for answers。 This was a very entertaining read。 I actually stayed up a lot bit too late to finish it。 This is a quirky but well told story about growing up。 Mau is left alone after a massive wave destroys the village on his island。 After he sends all of the bodies of the villagers into the deep current so their spirits can be free he finds out he is not alone on the island。 The story continues as Mau and his newfound friend try and survive and rebuild while searching their souls and surroundings for answers。 This was a very entertaining read。 I actually stayed up a lot bit too late to finish it。 Terry Pratchett is wonderful at making a world that's similar enough to draw you in and entertaining enough to keep you there。 I would recommend 。。。more

A wave devastates an island。 A young boy named Mau and shipwrecked Daphne work together to survive this environment。 The humor was more subdued that it is in the Discworld books。 Both the characters are outsiders in their world yet in is because of that they solve the problems they face。

One of the few books by Terry Pratchett that I had to force myself to read through to the very end。 It didn't have that wit and charm we come to expect from the great man and it honestly felt like it had outside input。The characters were bland and uninteresting and the plot was quite boring。 I know it was aimed towards children but my kids shared my thoughts entirely。 One of the few books by Terry Pratchett that I had to force myself to read through to the very end。 It didn't have that wit and charm we come to expect from the great man and it honestly felt like it had outside input。The characters were bland and uninteresting and the plot was quite boring。 I know it was aimed towards children but my kids shared my thoughts entirely。 。。。more

I thoroughly loved this story。 You will laugh and you will cry。 Listen to the author’s note at the end for author insight。 A terrible storm kills everyone on the Island Nation except one young boy。 The same storm shipwrecks a young girl in line for the throne。 The boy saves the girl。 They live on the deserted desert island accepting a steady stream of others who were displaced by the storm。 The story will mean as little or as much as you give to it。 I recommend the audiobook。 No sexy time。 Famil I thoroughly loved this story。 You will laugh and you will cry。 Listen to the author’s note at the end for author insight。 A terrible storm kills everyone on the Island Nation except one young boy。 The same storm shipwrecks a young girl in line for the throne。 The boy saves the girl。 They live on the deserted desert island accepting a steady stream of others who were displaced by the storm。 The story will mean as little or as much as you give to it。 I recommend the audiobook。 No sexy time。 Family story (maybe not too young as there is talk of death & beer & surgery)。 So good。 。。。more

If an author like Terry Pratchett was designing a thought experiment to explore what would have to happen in order for a fictionalized 19th century British empire to encounter a peaceful, undefended fictional island nation without immediately robbing or enslaving it, it might look a lot like this book。 It takes huge narrative leaps of imagination in order to achieve a good outcome for the Nation。

Even though I adore all of Pratchett’s Discworld stories, this one is by far his best work in my opinion。 I have read it five times now, and I still find new tidbits, things I’ve missed before。 And in all its humor, there is the underside of it。 Society at its best and its worst, and in some instances one can almost feel Pratchett’s anger with humanity and its failures and follies。Now that I’m writing this, I want to go straight back to reading it again。
