Summary

A new paperback edition of Lois Lowry’s Newbery Award–winning classic。

As the German troops begin their campaign to "relocate" all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family。

Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden。 The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war。

With a new introduction by the author。

I asked for this book for this past Hanukkah。 I’ve read it before, but it had been a long time since I’d read it, so I wanted to do it again。 It did well putting the reader in the main character’s shoes; we only know as much as she does。 Even if we know how these type of events happened in the past, there is an element of suspense that’s tangible and keeps you turning the page。 Excellent for younger readers。

It is a very good light reading about the holocaust times。 I liked it and would suggest for any young girl who is into reading books。

This is a re read for me, but it was my pick for a January reading Challenge。I try to read at least one or two books (fiction and/or non fiction) a year about historical events as I feel like knowing about our worlds history helps us to, hopefully, not repeat past mistakes。

One of my friends reads this every year。 I took the initiative and read it。 Oh my goodness。 So heartbreaking。 Everyone should read this one!

Outstanding, should be a required read because of the different perspective offered。I'm 58 now and by now I'm quite full of the tragedies and horror brought to us by the holocaust。 I can't do it anymore, it's just too much。 So when I realized that this was yet another book about this terrible time, I had to sit and think about whether or not I could bear it again。 I read a chapter to give it a chance and discovered that it's from a Danish perspective--something I'd never experienced before。 As a Outstanding, should be a required read because of the different perspective offered。I'm 58 now and by now I'm quite full of the tragedies and horror brought to us by the holocaust。 I can't do it anymore, it's just too much。 So when I realized that this was yet another book about this terrible time, I had to sit and think about whether or not I could bear it again。 I read a chapter to give it a chance and discovered that it's from a Danish perspective--something I'd never experienced before。 As a YA title, I felt protected from the adult-level, ruinous torture depicted in books like Schindler's List, so I tentatively continued reading。 I'm so glad I did。 This story is historical fiction but every single important part is based in truth。 I looked up everything and found pictures and related stories, which made me feel so happy and also so sad and broken。 This story tells one of escape and of people helping each other against the evil of WWII。 It touches upon cruelty only here and there so that young minds can become accustomed to the idea of how awful war can make people behave。 But it doesn't go further。 If you are like me and you just can't stand WWII history because it makes you insane with fury, you can still read this book and find another perspective that's unexpected and wonderful。 I won't ruin anything for readers but the true history of Denmark's role in saving Jews will make your heart sing。 。。。more

Re-read this book from my days in middle school, now through the eyes of a teacher looking to use it in the classroom。 I wanted to be sure this book was not too dark or revealing of the horrors of the Holocaust (children will learn more as they grow up, I don’t want them to know it all yet if I can help it) this book does an excellent job of balancing a tough story from a terrible time in our world’s history while also finding courage, light, friendship, and hope。 I’m very excited to read this b Re-read this book from my days in middle school, now through the eyes of a teacher looking to use it in the classroom。 I wanted to be sure this book was not too dark or revealing of the horrors of the Holocaust (children will learn more as they grow up, I don’t want them to know it all yet if I can help it) this book does an excellent job of balancing a tough story from a terrible time in our world’s history while also finding courage, light, friendship, and hope。 I’m very excited to read this book with my 4th graders。 。。。more

Simple, and a decent story to introduce the fear people had of the Nazis and how brave people fought back。 No violence in the story, just around it。

This is a great book。 I’m a big fan of The Giver, so I already like Lois Lowry’s work。 This is another book written for young readers to literary comprehension, yet swings well about its weight class when it comes to depth。 While much of youth fiction is silly or fantasy (which has its place, for sure) this is the kind of book all youth should read。 Even every adult should read。 Lowry does a great job of putting the reader in the story and having you question if you were in their place, how woul This is a great book。 I’m a big fan of The Giver, so I already like Lois Lowry’s work。 This is another book written for young readers to literary comprehension, yet swings well about its weight class when it comes to depth。 While much of youth fiction is silly or fantasy (which has its place, for sure) this is the kind of book all youth should read。 Even every adult should read。 Lowry does a great job of putting the reader in the story and having you question if you were in their place, how would you have handled it if you were in their place? As a 35 year-old father, I thoroughly enjoyed the story although it was a quick read。 I finished in a few days, and I don’t read particularly fast。 。。。more

Excellent attention to detail & story。 I enjoyed sharing this with my children in a way to open them up to the history of the holocaust but in a way that isn’t to hard for them to understand。

Short and sweet story。 I listened to the audiobook because I remember reading it in 4th or 5th grade and I wanted to re-read it。 I also now realize why I wanted to read Gone With the Wind, it was because of all the references in this book。😂

Excellent book for mature children; sadly an introduction into the horror and tragedy done to Jewish people in WWII。

This book is so sad。 I cried at some parts and the story behind it is devastating
