Summary

Set in a kingdom where danger lurks beneath the sea, mermaids seek vengeance with song, and magic is a choice。

She will reign。

As princess of the island kingdom Visidia, Amora Montara has spent her entire life training to be High Animancer — the master of souls。 The rest of the realm can choose their magic, but for Amora, it’s never been a choice。 To secure her place as heir to the throne, she must prove her mastery of the monarchy’s dangerous soul magic。

When her demonstration goes awry, Amora is forced to flee。 She strikes a deal with Bastian, a mysterious pirate: he’ll help her prove she’s fit to rule, if she’ll help him reclaim his stolen magic。

But sailing the kingdom holds more wonder — and more peril — than Amora anticipated。 A destructive new magic is on the rise, and if Amora is to conquer it, she’ll need to face legendary monsters, cross paths with vengeful mermaids, and deal with a stow-away she never expected… or risk the fate of Visidia and lose the crown forever。

I am the right choice。 The only choice。 And I will protect my kingdom。

This book reignited a love for reading that I forgot I had。 I wish I could go back in time so I could feel what it was like to read this for the first time all over again。

3。5This was fine。 It wasn’t anything special to be honest。 I liked the pirate aspect。 I mostly liked the main character I thought she was strong。 I liked the mermaid。 The men were honestly whatever。 This is kind of insta lovey which was annoying。

If you know me, you know I love the ocean and everything about it。 So, I figured since I also love fantasy, I couldn't go wrong with picking this up。 Even though I loved the different islands and how each island's inhabitants had different magical powers。 But, I was sadly let down by several others things。 First off, I was not a fan of the love triangle that was going on。 I thought that it added an unnecessary element to the story。 Also, while Amora was a cool character to have as the main persp If you know me, you know I love the ocean and everything about it。 So, I figured since I also love fantasy, I couldn't go wrong with picking this up。 Even though I loved the different islands and how each island's inhabitants had different magical powers。 But, I was sadly let down by several others things。 First off, I was not a fan of the love triangle that was going on。 I thought that it added an unnecessary element to the story。 Also, while Amora was a cool character to have as the main perspective, I felt that nothing was a challenge for her or the crew。 It felt like no matter what, they would barely make it out with a scratch and be back out and fighting within moments。 I would also say that the story was character-driven for the majority。 It felt like the plot was in the background, kind of just hanging out there。 But it wasn't all that bad。 I loved the Keel Haul and the journey that it took them on。 The magic was also really cool, but I wish it were incorporated a little bit more。 All in all, it wasn't what I was expecting, but it was still good, and I will finish off the duology even though I am not sure what's next。Overall Rating: 2。5 Stars rounded to 3! 。。。more

It was alright。 I’d say 3。5 if that were possible。 I’m very curious about the magic, and I liked the slow burn twist involving Amora’s magic and family lore。 I also am very interested in the way magic works in this world, so I’ll likely read the sequel to understand it all。 But it was also kinda meh sometimes。 The romances were predictable and a bit too sped-up in my opinion。 And some things felt too simple while others were overly complicated。 Worth a read though if you like adventures, pirates It was alright。 I’d say 3。5 if that were possible。 I’m very curious about the magic, and I liked the slow burn twist involving Amora’s magic and family lore。 I also am very interested in the way magic works in this world, so I’ll likely read the sequel to understand it all。 But it was also kinda meh sometimes。 The romances were predictable and a bit too sped-up in my opinion。 And some things felt too simple while others were overly complicated。 Worth a read though if you like adventures, pirates, and/or complex magic systems! I couldn’t really get into this book, and I felt like some of the events in the novel happened just to conveniently further the plot。 Personally, it’s not my favorite, but it’s definitely not bad。

THIS BOOK OMG AMORA IS DEF MY NEW FICTIONAL CHARACTER! I really loved and enjoyed this book!! Honestly wish I could read it for the first time again。 A reason why it’s at a 4 and not a 5 is becuase some parts were a little slow but they did pick up after a while。 I also cant wait to read the sequel!! I highly recommend this book。I absolutely adore the relationships in this book as well :)

Too predictable and cliche, not a fan。 The writing style is pretty good though。 I also wasn't a fan of the magic system, it was a bit too dark for my taste。 Too predictable and cliche, not a fan。 The writing style is pretty good though。 I also wasn't a fan of the magic system, it was a bit too dark for my taste。 。。。more

If you are considering reading this duology, don't let my rating dissuade you from giving it a try。 But do not listen to Audible's rendition by Shayna Small。 Every time she does a male voice she makes you want to perforate your tympanic membranes。 Er。。。pop your eardrums。 Suffice it to say it's bad。 And I may have been way more into this story otherwise。 But who can say。 The magic system was a little so-so。 The world building was decent, but everything felt a little slow。 And the chemistry was a If you are considering reading this duology, don't let my rating dissuade you from giving it a try。 But do not listen to Audible's rendition by Shayna Small。 Every time she does a male voice she makes you want to perforate your tympanic membranes。 Er。。。pop your eardrums。 Suffice it to say it's bad。 And I may have been way more into this story otherwise。 But who can say。 The magic system was a little so-so。 The world building was decent, but everything felt a little slow。 And the chemistry was a little flat。 Everything felt kind of。。。 little。 Like Shayna Small。 😆 I had to work hard to get that dad joke in。 Anywaaaays。I'd rate this a PG-13 for action/adventure peril and violence, some minor swearing, and teenage smoochy passion。 。。。more

I was surprised to find that what I liked least about the book was the magic itself。 There are just so many and everyone has it and it kinda makes it。。。 not special。 Even though the author takes time out to highlight a couple of the magics, just like the islands, (which was appreciated) it still felt like too much overall。 (At least 10 different types specified。)I'm not a fan of the soul magic or curse magic in the book, but the story was so well written it didn't impede my enjoyment of it as much as I thought it would。I also think that there was something special about the main character, whom you want to like, having this。。。 horrible version on magic。 And still finding yourself rooting for her。I would def recommend this book to anyone who likes stories about magic and/or sea sailing adventures。 。。。more

I really liked this!(view spoiler)[MOVING FORWARD:-Amora needs to get her magic back and break the cursed bond between her and Bastian-She needs to break the curse on her people that threatens their magic (maybe?? was that already broken in this book with Kaven's death?)-The kingdom will probably be at odds and divided over the removal of the one magic law, so I'm expecting some sort of war。-I bet there will be a faction who will try to overthrow Amora。 (hide spoiler)] I really liked this!(view spoiler)[MOVING FORWARD:-Amora needs to get her magic back and break the cursed bond between her and Bastian-She needs to break the curse on her people that threatens their magic (maybe?? was that already broken in this book with Kaven's death?)-The kingdom will probably be at odds and divided over the removal of the one magic law, so I'm expecting some sort of war。-I bet there will be a faction who will try to overthrow Amora。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This is the most original, deeply intricate fantasy I have read in a really long time。 There are so many details and the fantasy world is huge and not all the islands are explored( there are seven so it is a lot)。 I have to say that at parts it felt like the book would end there, like there were nothing else to be revealed but I have to say there are millions of plot twists。 The whole book is this labyrinth I got lost and kinda confused about but then it made sense。 The cast of characters is rea This is the most original, deeply intricate fantasy I have read in a really long time。 There are so many details and the fantasy world is huge and not all the islands are explored( there are seven so it is a lot)。 I have to say that at parts it felt like the book would end there, like there were nothing else to be revealed but I have to say there are millions of plot twists。 The whole book is this labyrinth I got lost and kinda confused about but then it made sense。 The cast of characters is really diverse in terms of personalities and skin colours。 I was really excited about the mermaid and just wanted to meet her but there is a long journey until that happens。 In some parts the book felt like… a lot。 A lot of characters, a lot of magic, a lot of secrets, just a lot of everything。 I loved the sailing part since it is one of the focus of the book and I was not bored about them being on board all the time。 There is plenty of romance and dangerous in the waters。 I have to say this book reminded me of the Caraval trilogy in the best way, like you are exploring the world, the descriptions are so rich in texture, colours… And Amora is incredible, such a fierce female lead, who knows how to fight while being kind and passionate。 。。。more

So this book was kind of a struggle for me。 I find the magic system VERY COOL and interesting but all the relationships seem so forced and I really just don’t like the main character at all。 She is spoiled and entitled and really kind of a bit**。。 but I liked Bastian for the most part and like I said, the kingdom and magic system is pretty interesting。

“The world doesn’t work with only your eyes Princess。 There’s truth in more than what you can see” 🙌 I’m gonna have to say that this book is a lot darker than expected。 The magic system in this book is pretty grim as well。 I love the journey embarked by the crew and it seems like the story also bring us together while they explore new islands。 Magic ship, cursed captain, dark magician, healer and mermaid sounds weird but they definitely work well together 🧜‍♀️
