Summary

This edition has the full text of the original Pinocchio with a mixture of full-page and spot illustrations in black and white。

Now a Netflix original movie! Includes an introduction by Guillermo del Toro!

"It took one look at Gris' design for me to be convinced that。。。 this was 'the' Pinocchio。"--Guillermo del Toro

Once there was a lonely woodcutter named Geppetto-who dreamed of having a boy of his own。 So one day he carved a boy out of wood and named him Pinocchio。

When the puppet comes to life, it's Geppetto's dream come true。

Except Pinocchio turns out to be not such a nice boy after all。 Pinocchio enjoys nothing better than creating mischief and playing mean tricks。 As he discovers, being bad is much more fun than being good。

For a while, anyway。

Happily for Pinocchio, he will learn that there is much more to being a real boy than having fun。

A magical tale that has entertained children of all ages for more than a hundred years, this lavishly and gorgeously illustrated new edition is the perfect introduction of a timeless classic to a new generation of readers。

And that's no lie!

Even for a children's book - this is such an incredibly terrible text。 I feel like it sets a dangerous precedent for children in that Pinocchio just does what he wants and is always forgiven and given second chances。 His reward for 29 chapters of absolute defiance and shithousery is to be turned into a real boy - likely just so he can continue getting away with *literal murder*。 Terrible。 Still not as infuriating as Railway Children。 Even for a children's book - this is such an incredibly terrible text。 I feel like it sets a dangerous precedent for children in that Pinocchio just does what he wants and is always forgiven and given second chances。 His reward for 29 chapters of absolute defiance and shithousery is to be turned into a real boy - likely just so he can continue getting away with *literal murder*。 Terrible。 Still not as infuriating as Railway Children。 。。。more

Since I knew that this book was originally much darker than the Disney adaptation I had this book on my tbr for a while。 And since it's a pretty short read I decided to knock this one off by the end of this year but boy did this 200 page book take me ages to read - not because it was bad because I hated the main character so so badly。 In this book he kills - yes straight up kills the cricket at the beginning of the story, he comes back to life by the end of the story but he still smacked him wit Since I knew that this book was originally much darker than the Disney adaptation I had this book on my tbr for a while。 And since it's a pretty short read I decided to knock this one off by the end of this year but boy did this 200 page book take me ages to read - not because it was bad because I hated the main character so so badly。 In this book he kills - yes straight up kills the cricket at the beginning of the story, he comes back to life by the end of the story but he still smacked him with a hammer because he got angry。 That 。。。 was pretty gruesome。 He then also falls for the same old tricks over and over and over again and it was just a mess。 I also didn't like how on the nose the message was - yes kids should stay in school and they should listen to their parents but this book tends to hammer that in every 10 sentences and it gets boring and repetitive really fast。 I am still really glad that I read this version though。 It's still a pretty good classic children's book with decent morals。 。。。more

Gorgeous book, delightful story。 I’ve seen many cinematic adaptations of the tale, but I now appreciate how close to the original cheeky tale Benigni’s 2002 adaptation was。 This was a delightful holiday read。

Disney definitely sanitized this story beyond recognition。 This version of Pinocchio would not seem out of place in a Waffle House fight video。

joaqui。

“I understand,” said Pinocchio at once wearily, “this is no place for me! I was not born for work。” Pinocchio was the first no thoughts head empty 🥴

I love a lot of late 19th c。 and early 20th c。 children's literature - Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz - so I was hoping to find something as delightful with Pinocchio。 And。。。it's not bad。 It has some excellent moments: the little dead girl with the blue hair (prior to Collodi deciding she is actually a fairy), and the running gag of the fox and the cat who echoes everything his companion says。 Pinocchio as a character is irritating。 He lacks any of the charm that Alice, Peter, I love a lot of late 19th c。 and early 20th c。 children's literature - Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, the Wizard of Oz - so I was hoping to find something as delightful with Pinocchio。 And。。。it's not bad。 It has some excellent moments: the little dead girl with the blue hair (prior to Collodi deciding she is actually a fairy), and the running gag of the fox and the cat who echoes everything his companion says。 Pinocchio as a character is irritating。 He lacks any of the charm that Alice, Peter, and Dorothy have, that endear themselves to the reader even when they are being foolish。 In conclusion: I'm glad I read it, but I doubt I will read it again。 Oh, and the translation seems quite good。 I don't know how accurate it is, but it reads well (not too old-fashioned so as to be tedious, but not modern either。 You definitely know it is a late 19th c。 novel), and I appreciated the nerdy and copious endnotes (particularly his notes on Collodi's use of words distinct to the Florence region)。 。。。more

The adventures of Pinocchio was an ok story about a puppet who is constantly disobeying his father and fairy godmother。 I didn’t love this story but figured I would give it a chance since I never read it as a child。 Also I think the artwork and interactive elements for this version are probably the least interesting of the five MinaLima classics I own。 Overall, this was ok。 I don’t think it would have been one I would have loved as a child but I probably would have enjoyed it a little bit more。

I read this because I liked the recent Guillermo del Toro movie a lot and had never read it before。 It's。。。 pretty different from both the Disney movie and the recent one (which was supposedly more faithful)。 The story is more fantastic in general - many puppets have life, nearly all the animals talk。 The talking cricket is killed (by Pinocchio) in the same chapter it's introduced。 All very fantastical and strange。 But it's an action-packed (especially given its short length) interesting story。 I read this because I liked the recent Guillermo del Toro movie a lot and had never read it before。 It's。。。 pretty different from both the Disney movie and the recent one (which was supposedly more faithful)。 The story is more fantastic in general - many puppets have life, nearly all the animals talk。 The talking cricket is killed (by Pinocchio) in the same chapter it's introduced。 All very fantastical and strange。 But it's an action-packed (especially given its short length) interesting story。 。。。more

Very explicitly made for teaching lessons to children- so explicitly in fact that it reads like a parody of children’s stories。 I found this aspect came back around to become majorly entertaining。 The story itself is pretty meandering and simple, but it definitely has some fun moments, and I laughed a bit。 Narrator Vance does a great job as always。

Reading the original version of Pinocchio is a revealing experience。 While things made familiar by the Disney version and others are obviously there, they are far from what they are in the movie or lighter children's versions。 First of all, this book is much darker than one might expect。 There is death and pain and Pinocchio is a most unpleasant character for so much of the novel。 Second, as the story was originally written as a serial, there are clearly points where the author created cliffhang Reading the original version of Pinocchio is a revealing experience。 While things made familiar by the Disney version and others are obviously there, they are far from what they are in the movie or lighter children's versions。 First of all, this book is much darker than one might expect。 There is death and pain and Pinocchio is a most unpleasant character for so much of the novel。 Second, as the story was originally written as a serial, there are clearly points where the author created cliffhangers。 I did feel there was some degree of repetition in the book as Pinocchio has opportunity after opportunity to do better and foolishly does not。 To quote, "then he ended up doing what all children without a shred of good sense and without a heart do。" After each misadventure, he promises to do better but then failis again。 There are some confusing things, such as characters dead, then not。 And, though there are morals aplenty to learn, often Pinocchio is undeservedly rescued。 This book also included illustrations which I found poor。 。。。more
