Ovid’s Metamorphoses is an epic poem, but one that upturns almost every convention。 There is no main hero, no central conflict, and no sustained objective。 What it is about (power, defiance, art, love, abuse, grief, rape, war, beauty, and so on) is as changeable as the beings that inhabit its pages。 The sustained thread is power and how it transforms us, both those of us who have it and those of us who do not。 For those who are brutalized and traumatized, transformation is often the outward manifestation of their trauma。 A beautiful virgin is caught in the gaze of someone more powerful who rapes or tries to rape them, and they ultimately are turned into a tree or a lake or a stone or a bird。 The victim’s objectification is clear: They are first a visual object, then a sexual object, and finally simply an object。 Around 50 of the epic’s tales involve rape or attempted rape of women。 Past translations have obscured or mitigated Ovid’s language so that rape appears to be consensual sex。 Through her translation, McCarter considers the responsibility of handling sexual and social dynamics。

Then why continue to read Ovid? McCarter proposes Ovid should be read because he gives us stories through which we can better explore ourselves and our world, and he illuminates problems that humans have been grappling with for millennia。 Careful translation of rape and the body allows readers to see Ovid’s nuances clearly and to better appreciate how ideas about sexuality, beauty, and gender are constructed over time。 This is especially important since so many of our own ideas about these phenomena are themselves undergoing rapid metamorphosis, and Ovid can help us see and understand this progression。 The Metamorphoses holds up a kaleidoscopic lens to the modern world, one that offers us the opportunity to reflect on contemporary discussions about gender, sexuality, race, violence, art, and identity。

There is no doubt this is the best work of literature I have and will read for the for the foreseeable future。 I havent even completed the entire thing but I can rely on Ovid to stay consist with themes, messages, and character stories through and through。 When it comes to the best sources on Greek/Roman mythology, this and Apollodorus’ library are the best bet

kako nema koncepciju pripovedanja, jasno se mogu uočiti tri segmenta od po pet pevanja svaki: prvi segment Kompleksno, na momente sufokativno, no uglavnom očaravajuće, zanosno i inspirišuće kapitalno, najupečatljivije, budući da Ovidije tu peva o stvaranju sveta iz haosa i trima dobima što su potom usledila nakon stvaranja čoveka – zlatnog, srebrnog i gvozdenog。 Svakako, najprominentnija je legenda kojom se prvo pevanje završava, a koja peva o Febovom sinu Faetonu i njegovoj tvrdoglavosti zbog koje je suludo stradao。 U drugom pevanju najfantastičnija i najsnažnije donesena scena je svakako Minervin odlazak kod Zavisti da joj naredi da se uvuče u srce Aglaurino。 Ništa slabije opisana i manje opskurna je i personifikacija Gladi i njenog brloga iz VIII pevanja drugog petoknjižja, do koje Cerera šalje jednu od oreada kako bi kaznila obesnog Erisihtona koji je ubio par njenih nimfi koje su bile preobražene u drveće。 Dalje, ređaju se i prepliću teogonijski momenti – poput rađanja Bakhovog i legendi vezanih za njegov kult, preko Cererinih nevolja sa neposlušnicima, katabatičnih iskustava i opisa donjeg sveta, čaranja i basmi čarobnice Medeje i njenih votivnih trenutaka sa boginjom Hekatom, te Kirke i njenih marifetluka, bestelesnih glasova u Sibilinim pećinama u Kumi, do brojnih seksualnih aluzija i bahanalija, Prokninog čedomorstva u cilju odbrane časti sestre joj Filomele, Narcisove autohomoerotske čežnje i patnje tužne nimfe Eho čiju je ljubav prezreo, do više nego dobro poznate legende o Orfeju i Euridici i Orfejevoj katabazi。 Bezbroj je rimsko-grčkih božanstava opisano i objašnjeno i isto toliko nebožanskih bića koja su im pomoćnici。 Mnogi ratnici, koje poznaje grčka epika, kod Ovidija bivaju još jedanput ovenčani slavom kroz legende o njihovim podvizima: Persej, Hektor, Pelej, Ahil, Agamemnon, Odisej, Eneja itd。 Pred kraj drugog petoknjižja, Ovidije se osvrnuo na Vergilijevu Eneidu, premda samo u naznakama, pobrojavši one delove Eneinog putovanja ka Italiji nakon pada Troje, koji pevaju o teriomorfnim ili antropomorfnim bićima kao rezultat neke metamorfoze: Skili i Haribdi, Polifemu i Galateji i td。Poslednje petoknjižje posvećeno je veličanju i apoteozama vladara poteklih od Eneje – Romula, Nume te Cezara, sa kojim i završava čitav spev:Bozi, Enèjini druzi, od kojih je uzmico nekadoganj i mači, i vi, o domaći bozi, i GradaOče Kvirine ti, i Kvirína nedobitnog očeGradive, i ti, o Vesto međ Cesarovim Penátmaštovana, i kućni Febe sa Cesarovom sa Vestom,Jupiter-bože, što sjediš u Tarpejskom visokom hramu, i drugi, koje je pravo da pobožno zaziva pjesnik:Dan nek daleko bude i poslije vremena našeg,kada će ostaviv svijet, što njime upravlja, Augustu nebo otić i blago s daleka molitve slušat!Ne bi ovo putovanje kroz ovu gustu šumu imèna bilo ni upola toliko lako da se nisam odvažio da paralelno čitam i upoređujem tri prevoda: najstariji, stihovni, Toma Maretića, koji je na ovim prostorima postojao od 1907。 u izdanju Matice Hrvatske, zatim prozni prevod Milosava Popadića, koji je 2022。 godine objavila Metaphysica i engleski, takođe prozni prevod Ričarda Smita u Folio Society izdanju iz 1995。 Svaki prevod je bio deo jednog mozaika koji se kongruentno dopunjavao。 Svakako, moja fascinacija Maretićevog prepeva „Eneide“, prenela se i potvrdila i u Ovidijevim „Metamorfozama“。 On filigranski prati „struk“ originala i pronalazi i uklapa reči u predivo, da nekada zastanem i vratim se da bih ponovo pročitao neki segment i nanovo mu se divio。 Takođe, iako može da ponekad bude zamorno, njegovi prevodi obiluju brojnim, suvislim komentarima, potkovanim, jasnim i potrebnim objašnjenjima, kako bi savremeni čitalac mogao da „ukači“ i isprati pojmove koji su Ovidijevim savremenicima bili deo svakodnevice。 Što se Popadićevog prevoda tiče – bio sam poprilično skeptičan šta će me dočekati, ali brzo mi se skeptičnost preobrazila u afirmativnost。 Premda, svakako, manje poetičniji od Maretićevog, prevod je, ipak, odličan, i donosi sasvim dobro ono o čemu Ovidije peva。 Tako da mi je, u segmentima kada me Maretićeva konstrukcija ponegde umori i uspori mi čitanje, Popadićev prevod otkloni umor i pomaže da lakše i brže pređem neke komplikovane delove。 Jedina mana je što su komentari u fusnotama poprilično šturi i slabo informativni a neki su i vrlo subjektivni i nije im tu mesto。 Osim što su obojica – i Maretić i Popadić – svako u svojoj niši imali neke greške u rodu (Popadić je personifikaciju Napulja u imenu sirene Partenope preveo u muškom rodu, a Maretić je, što je više opravdano od Popadićeve omaške, personifikaciju Fosforusa iz grčke mitologije, čije ime na latinskom, tj。 u rimskoj mitologiji glasi Lucifer, a radi se o zvezdi Danici, preveo u ženskom obliku, pa je tako Keik(s)u bio majka umesto muškog roditelja), nemam nikakvih većih zamerki na sam kvalitet prevoda。 Engleski prevod je poprilično sličan Popadićevom, jer mislim da su obojica koristila isti izvor。 。。。more

The introduction alone is worth the price of the book, but the translation is carefully and thoughtfully done。 It’s easy to read and maintains the feeling of poetry and a dedication to accurate translation。 Highly recommend!

This was a pretty good read。 I enjoyed the translation a lot。 It was pretty understandable an I loved reading all the different stories。 The way it flows from one to the next and connects everything together was really interesting and well done I felt like too。 Some of these stories are hecka crazy though, people definitely had some twisted minds, but all in all I enjoyed them。 I love mythology and it was fun reading all the stories and seeing where various books that I love have pulled some of This was a pretty good read。 I enjoyed the translation a lot。 It was pretty understandable an I loved reading all the different stories。 The way it flows from one to the next and connects everything together was really interesting and well done I felt like too。 Some of these stories are hecka crazy though, people definitely had some twisted minds, but all in all I enjoyed them。 I love mythology and it was fun reading all the stories and seeing where various books that I love have pulled some of their ideas from。 For instance, I kept seeing where things from Percy Jackson lined up and I kept getting excited about it。 I felt like I was doing research along side Riordan as he maybe came across a story and thought, 'hey that could be a great thing to work in here。' Overall, if you enjoy greek/roman mythology or just mythology of any kind really, this is a great read! 。。。more

Ok so here’s the thing。 The Iliad is a masterpiece and naturally you read this comparing it to that。 Although this is a well-written and emotional narrative, it’s missing something。 The last line is the best, but it’s missing the drama and the art of Homer’s epic poems。

I have been meaning to read this book since I was a teenager, and I have started it more than once。 However, its considerable length combined with its variable nature (it is a collection of stories, not one story) has always led me to lose interest in it。 Plus, I have read so much in the realm of Greek and Latin myth, and I have read so many excerpts from this book, that I already know most of these stories in isolation。 Still, I decided that it was time to approach it, one way or another, so I I have been meaning to read this book since I was a teenager, and I have started it more than once。 However, its considerable length combined with its variable nature (it is a collection of stories, not one story) has always led me to lose interest in it。 Plus, I have read so much in the realm of Greek and Latin myth, and I have read so many excerpts from this book, that I already know most of these stories in isolation。 Still, I decided that it was time to approach it, one way or another, so I listened to the audiobook a bit at a time while doing things around the house。 I’m glad I did because I enjoyed the stories I knew, and I found that the unfamiliar material was sometimes quite interesting, as well。 Time well spent, in the sense that cooking and cleaning and straightening up around the house had a side order of Ovid。 。。。more
