Summary

A novel inspired by #1 New York Times best-selling author Mark Greaney's Audible Original drama, Armored

Joshua Duffy is a Close Protection Agent--a professional bodyguard--and he's one of the world's elite operatives。 That is, he was until his last mission in Lebanon。 Against all odds, Josh got his primary out alive, but the cost was high。 Josh lost his lower left leg。

There's not much call for an elite bodyguard with such an injury。 So, Josh has to support his family working as a mall cop in New Jersey。 For a man like Josh, this is purgatory on earth, but miracles can occur even in Paramus。

A lucky run-in with an old comrade promises to get Josh back in the field for one last job。 The UN is sending a peace mission into the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico, an area so dangerous it's known as Espinazo del Diablo--the Devil's Spine。 Only a fool would think they could broker peace between the homicidal drug cartels in the region, and only a madman would sign on to keep those fools alive。

So trying to pay his rent sets up the basis for the story and without spoilers it a pretty good ride, not as good a few Gray Man novels, but as good as others, the characters are complex, the good guys shoot better than the bad guys, however the tried and true plot devices seem a little less obvious in this book, maybe because the character is fresh and maybe because he is not suspose to be very good at all。 So try this book, I do hope Mr。 Greaney writes another chapter and gives Mrs Duffy a little more action。 。。。more

I don't often review books but this one was a really good story。 The "likeable" outcast characters and good plot, chuck full with action。 It deserves the five stars。 I don't often review books but this one was a really good story。 The "likeable" outcast characters and good plot, chuck full with action。 It deserves the five stars。 。。。more

I loved this。 I don't know if its also a book but what I listened to was an audio drama rather than an audio book - with lots of actors playing the different parts。 It was exciting, suspenseful, had lots of great action sequences and an interesting plot。 The main protoganist Duffy is an appealing characater。 Despite having a leg amputated, he manages to get a job in Mexico, looking after a delegation going to meet with a drug cartel。4。5/5 I loved this。 I don't know if its also a book but what I listened to was an audio drama rather than an audio book - with lots of actors playing the different parts。 It was exciting, suspenseful, had lots of great action sequences and an interesting plot。 The main protoganist Duffy is an appealing characater。 Despite having a leg amputated, he manages to get a job in Mexico, looking after a delegation going to meet with a drug cartel。4。5/5 。。。more

A reluctant 5 stars as I am trying to honor Goodread's whole star system。 But still an outstanding new series from the author of the Gray Man series。 I don't know that I would have figured that out based on the change in style, but I am glad I found it。 I feel like it is flying under the radar。 This series is about a security agent who needs to do "one more job。"Everything works。 The action is fantastic。 Great supporting characters。 The ending is telegraphed, but is still enjoyable。 I am anxious A reluctant 5 stars as I am trying to honor Goodread's whole star system。 But still an outstanding new series from the author of the Gray Man series。 I don't know that I would have figured that out based on the change in style, but I am glad I found it。 I feel like it is flying under the radar。 This series is about a security agent who needs to do "one more job。"Everything works。 The action is fantastic。 Great supporting characters。 The ending is telegraphed, but is still enjoyable。 I am anxious to see where he goes with this。 。。。more

This is my first Mark Greaney book which I decided to read after watching the Gray Man movie on Netflix。 It was definitely an action packed adventure that has the potential to be turned into a movie。 The lead character, Joshua Duffy, is a mall cop who used to be a top level military security guard before he suffered the loss of his leg。 Duffy runs into a former comrade in arms in the mall and finds out about an opportunity for a dangerous mission that pays well。 The mission involves escorting UN This is my first Mark Greaney book which I decided to read after watching the Gray Man movie on Netflix。 It was definitely an action packed adventure that has the potential to be turned into a movie。 The lead character, Joshua Duffy, is a mall cop who used to be a top level military security guard before he suffered the loss of his leg。 Duffy runs into a former comrade in arms in the mall and finds out about an opportunity for a dangerous mission that pays well。 The mission involves escorting UN diplomats into the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico for a diplomatic mission seeking peace with the drug cartels。 In summary, Greaney knows how to write an action book that packs a punch but this one dragged on a bit。 。。。more

I've enjoyed all of the Mark Greaney thrillers, whether the "Gray Man" series or his work as a Tom Clancy legacy author continuing the "Jack Ryan Universe"。。。In "Armored," we're introduced to Joshua Duffy, a Close Projection Agent (bodyguard) and former elite soldier。。。Duffy, who lost a leg on an earlier assignment is now struggling to provide for his family as a "mall cop," as there is little call for a one-legged elite bodyguard。。。As luck would have it he meets with a former comrade in arms an I've enjoyed all of the Mark Greaney thrillers, whether the "Gray Man" series or his work as a Tom Clancy legacy author continuing the "Jack Ryan Universe"。。。In "Armored," we're introduced to Joshua Duffy, a Close Projection Agent (bodyguard) and former elite soldier。。。Duffy, who lost a leg on an earlier assignment is now struggling to provide for his family as a "mall cop," as there is little call for a one-legged elite bodyguard。。。As luck would have it he meets with a former comrade in arms and worms his way into a highly dangerous private security gig in Mexican Cartel Country。。。Lots of twists and turns and action to keep the pages turning。。。Looking forward to another episode! 。。。more

I thought this one started a little slowly for me after the initial action in the Middle East where Josh Duffy lost his lower leg。 It definitely got better and picked up speed as the private security contractors he was working for started entering cartel territory in Mexico。 By the end it was very good and satisfying, I didn't see the bad guy's background affiliation coming。Bougainvillea was mentioned on page 298 as covering a building in a quaint Mexican village。 I haven't seen it mentioned for I thought this one started a little slowly for me after the initial action in the Middle East where Josh Duffy lost his lower leg。 It definitely got better and picked up speed as the private security contractors he was working for started entering cartel territory in Mexico。 By the end it was very good and satisfying, I didn't see the bad guy's background affiliation coming。Bougainvillea was mentioned on page 298 as covering a building in a quaint Mexican village。 I haven't seen it mentioned for a while and was a little surprised to find it included in a Mark Greaney novel。 。。。more

103-2022。 Greaney has a keen eye for all the details of military adventure。 Our hero gets involved in an operation in Mexico, and all sorts of stuff happens。 The good guys are pretty appealing, and some justice is done。 It seems that our guy may show up in a future book, and I’d be willing to take that ride with him。

Good characters, fast moving plot。 Lots of guns, lots of bodies。 Cardoza was a great villain。 The showdown in town and the reveals leading up to the airfield were good。 It was not a surprise that Duffy’s wife Nikki was going to somehow become his QRF。 For me, her character could have used a bit more development, to attempt to make it believable that she would dump her two kids and leave the country to save her husband。 I’d like her to be more badass than janitor, but for me, the part about how s Good characters, fast moving plot。 Lots of guns, lots of bodies。 Cardoza was a great villain。 The showdown in town and the reveals leading up to the airfield were good。 It was not a surprise that Duffy’s wife Nikki was going to somehow become his QRF。 For me, her character could have used a bit more development, to attempt to make it believable that she would dump her two kids and leave the country to save her husband。 I’d like her to be more badass than janitor, but for me, the part about how she gets to Josh was a bit strained。 However, I totally enjoyed the book and look forward to the next。 。。。more

To broker peace among warring cartels in Mexico’s Sierra Madre。 It was proffered as a straightforward mission and easy money。 But even before they reach the treacherous ridge called the Devil’s Spine, guns start firing and the body count starts rising。 What follows is a story about cartel hierarchy, drug cartel warfare, drug lords, SAM missiles, political double-crosses, plenty of red-herrings and hidden agendas by pretty much everyone who’s involved! To say there is plenty of action and suspense in Armored is an understatement。 This novel is well and truly fast-paced。 The characters are well-developed and interesting (even the ‘evil’ ones!) Greaney has created a bevy of misfits for this mission。 Most of whom are thought of as “un hireable” and deemed not suited for CPA work。 But what these boys have in common, is their ability to pull together in a crisis and they all have one another’s back。 The story is told from the POV of both Duffy and Nikki (who is back at home in Virginia)。 When it becomes evident to Nikki that Josh has ended up way over his head – she springs into action。 You see, Duffy’s wife is a badass ex-Army captain and chopper pilot。 Still with contacts in the military, Nikki heads over to Mexico to find her husband。 She wants nothing more than for her husband to arrive home safe。 My paperback copy came in at approximately 530 pages, and, while I think it could have been trimmed down somewhat in length, it was nevertheless a quick and riveting read。 A terrific set-up for what looks like a very entertaining and high octane series。 。。。more

Not my favorite Greaney storyThis was ok but compared to his other novels…。this just left me with an ok feeling about it。 I believe I would read more about Josh Duffy but I don’t know what direction Greaney will take mostly b/c of his limited ability the prosthetic legs creates for Duffy。 This really just left me not sure about this new character。

This is a solidly written novel of a debut series by Mark Greaney。 Of course, I've enjoyed the Gray Man series as well as the Jack Ryan novels which Mr。 Greaney has written and I hope that he continues the adventures of Joshua Duffy soon!
