Summary

The funniest WTF AM I DOING?! novel of the year, now in paperback

"The new Bridget Jones for our Covid-ridden times" - Telegraph

Nell Stevens’ life is a mess。

When her business goes bust and her fiancé with it, Nell’s happy ever after in California falls apart and she moves back to London to start over。 But a lot has changed since she’s been gone。 All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house, and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f*ck up。 Even worse, a forty-something f*ck-up

But when she lands a job writing obituaries, Nell meets the fabulous Cricket, an eighty-something widow with challenges of her own, and they strike up an unlikely friendship。 Together they begin to help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned, and push each other into new adventures and unexpected joys。

Because Nell is determined。 Next year things are going to be very different。 It's time to turn her life around。

A book for anyone who’s ever worried life isn’t going to plan, Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up by Alexandra Potter will make you laugh and it might even make you cry。 But most importantly, it will remind you that you're not alone, because we’re all in this together。

Time to fall in love with your life。

Skimming and eye-rolling。 Nell is a goody-two-shoes with no backbone。 A welcome mat of sorts。 We should have read Monty's obituary page, at least。 Skimming and eye-rolling。 Nell is a goody-two-shoes with no backbone。 A welcome mat of sorts。 We should have read Monty's obituary page, at least。 。。。more

Absolutely loved this book, even though I’m still in my twenties I felt like I could still relate to Nell and I was gripped from the start。 So many laugh out loud moments - wish I could read it for the first time all over again。

O thank god I have finally managed to finish this。 It was rather painful and everything about it irritated me from the main character, which was really unlikeable for me right down to the quality of the audio narration, which was either too quiet, so I was unable to hear it when outside, or too loud, screaming about the things to be grateful for in my ear。 In theory, I should have related to this book, but it was everything opposite but that。 Moreover, I just found it being older, whinier, much O thank god I have finally managed to finish this。 It was rather painful and everything about it irritated me from the main character, which was really unlikeable for me right down to the quality of the audio narration, which was either too quiet, so I was unable to hear it when outside, or too loud, screaming about the things to be grateful for in my ear。 In theory, I should have related to this book, but it was everything opposite but that。 Moreover, I just found it being older, whinier, much less funny, much more sour Bridget Jones wannabe。Also, it was mightily superficial, it just touched a topic, but then solved it quickly or just left it be。 And not that well written either。 Not even the use of profane language has made it more interesting。 。。。more

Nell is in her forties, she's depressed and cynical, her fiancé breaks up with her and they lose their business, she returns home to London, leaving LA behind。 Her parents and brother and friends are all living a life that barely has a place for her, she gets a room with a married stranger and an old friend gets her a job as obituary journalist, where she meets Cricket a recently widowed eighty years old woman。。。 this book is about late bloomers, second chances, unexpected friendships, women and Nell is in her forties, she's depressed and cynical, her fiancé breaks up with her and they lose their business, she returns home to London, leaving LA behind。 Her parents and brother and friends are all living a life that barely has a place for her, she gets a room with a married stranger and an old friend gets her a job as obituary journalist, where she meets Cricket a recently widowed eighty years old woman。。。 this book is about late bloomers, second chances, unexpected friendships, women and self-love。 I enjoyed it immensely。 。。。more

Mediocre, so cliché。 An easy read though (but could have done with 200 less pages)。

I had read The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and while I know this is a crazy comparison I found them with both as inspiring! This book is funny and inspiring。 Being a 40-something F*ck up myself I got a lot of inspiration from this book!

"Maybe this is what happens when you get to this middle stage of life。 You don't just have one job any more; you have lots of different things。 Some make money, some don't, but all together they make up a life fulfilled。""You think you are keeping the secret, but really it's keeping you。""Embrace your sense of humor, don't ever take yourself too seriously, every day is another chance to laugh instead of cry, and when nothing is certain, everything is a hell of a lot less scary when you make fun "Maybe this is what happens when you get to this middle stage of life。 You don't just have one job any more; you have lots of different things。 Some make money, some don't, but all together they make up a life fulfilled。""You think you are keeping the secret, but really it's keeping you。""Embrace your sense of humor, don't ever take yourself too seriously, every day is another chance to laugh instead of cry, and when nothing is certain, everything is a hell of a lot less scary when you make fun of it。"Ich könnte noch viele weitere Zitate aus dem Buch aufschreiben, die ich mir während des Lesens markiert habe。 Ich habe das Buch GELIEBT! 。。。more

It has to be 5 stars just because I really enjoyed it。 I also enjoyed the mixture of shorter and longer chapters it psychologically made it easier for my pea brain to read。 It made me laugh and I found parts of it relatable (even though I have a way to go to 40 something)。 I recommend this as a feel good and easy read。

One of the best books (that’s outside my usual genre) that I’ve read in a while! Despite not being a forty-something I still felt myself relating。 And I laughed and cried so much。 If your of any age and struggling with life not going to the “plan” or finding your self in a bit of a slump this book is for you! Honestly could hardly put it down。 And loved every second。 Would highly recommend。 And I am already adding to my to reread list😊

I picked this up at Heathrow, looking for a quick holiday read。 I got so much more! This book is really lovely and human。 While it’s an easy read, it’s also well-written and while it’s light hearted, it’s layered and relatable and really funny。 I found Nell and her predicaments so easy to identify with and loved the warmth of the female friendships。

Bee Cee

Relatable, quite funny and life lessons。 Well written and very nicely read by Sally Phillips on Storytel。

4。5 rounded down。 I was surprised and impressed by this book。 It was full a bit and pieces that felt so relatable and supportive。 Nells journey was great but the idea of all that transformation happening in one year, well I critical of the timeline of her success。 I rated this book highly because it surprised me and all the moment that’s spoke to me and put into words, feelings I have about this world。 I was please Johnny was only a passing ‘lesson’ and I loved the intergenerational friendship b 4。5 rounded down。 I was surprised and impressed by this book。 It was full a bit and pieces that felt so relatable and supportive。 Nells journey was great but the idea of all that transformation happening in one year, well I critical of the timeline of her success。 I rated this book highly because it surprised me and all the moment that’s spoke to me and put into words, feelings I have about this world。 I was please Johnny was only a passing ‘lesson’ and I loved the intergenerational friendship btw cricket and Nell。 。。。more
