Summary

Kitchen juxtaposes two tales about mothers, transsexuality, bereavement, kitchens, love and tragedy in contemporary Japan。 It is a startlingly original first work by Japan's brightest young literary star and is now a cult film。

When Kitchen was first published in Japan in 1987 it won two of Japan's most prestigious literary prizes, climbed its way to the top of the bestseller lists, then remained there for over a year and sold millions of copies。 Banana Yoshimoto was hailed as a young writer of great talent and great passion whose work has quickly earned a place among the best of modern literature, and has been described as 'the voice of young Japan' by the Independent on Sunday

Definitely a must for modern literature。 I have come to the conclusion that's Yoshimoto's novels are all quite bittersweet: capable of making you feel the most depressing feelings yet somehow helping you feel hopeful。 Definitely a must for modern literature。 I have come to the conclusion that's Yoshimoto's novels are all quite bittersweet: capable of making you feel the most depressing feelings yet somehow helping you feel hopeful。 。。。more

How can someone told sad stories this light and easy to read? She did! This book contain heavy topic like loss and griefing in a very light hearted way。 The way she described how it feels exactly the same the way I did。 A bit magical realism - very japanese, still a sad book but fun to read。

Her writing is so honest, so deep, so pure。 I loved every word that was in this book 🥺

I read this in the 90s when it came out and always associated it with a warm, comfortable feeling。 It was just as lovely the second time。

Beautiful Quick read。 Could’ve read in one day but life。 Wanted to know more about the characters。 It’s not always a poor reflection on the author or the story when you wished to learn more about the characters。 In this case, I just wanted more more more。

Her writing is stirring, lyrical, and poetic, yet it is delivered with such unvarnished clarity and honesty that it is like listening to a story told by a child。 Her first novel, I will be reading more。

I set my expectations a little too high for this one。 It was a good read although felt very boring at times, it's like you were waiting for more but it wasn't given。 Writing in this book was beautiful, the words used to describe emotions were quite exquisite therefore it gives the reader a very authentic process of reading。 This book felt like a draft yet in a passable way。 I set my expectations a little too high for this one。 It was a good read although felt very boring at times, it's like you were waiting for more but it wasn't given。 Writing in this book was beautiful, the words used to describe emotions were quite exquisite therefore it gives the reader a very authentic process of reading。 This book felt like a draft yet in a passable way。 。。。more

warm, homely。 paths, dawn, nights and mornings。 health and sickness。 all the declinations of family。 undying memories, living past in the cervices of the present。 loved all the crescendos in both the parts, never too harsh, or at least when harsh, the story bandages you like life does as well。 beautiful。

Nico

it is quite abnormal how much i loved reading kitchen and midnight shadow。 i feel so much for mikage and satsuki and their pain makes me sad for them too。 crazy how ms yoshimoto doesn’t use descriptive writing but her words hold so much impact anyways

stunning。 i’ve always found grief terrifying and hard to grasp, and being able to see the experience in literature felt comforting。 loved moonlight shadow more as compared to kitchen but both super beautiful。
