Summary

A darkly funny, frightening novel about a young woman learning how to take what she wants from a witch who may be too good to be true, from the author of The Return

All her life, Annie has played it nice and safe。 After being unceremoniously dumped by her longtime boyfriend, Annie seeks a fresh start。 She accepts a teaching position that moves her from Manhattan to a small village upstate。 She's stunned by how perfect and picturesque the town is。 The people are all friendly and warm。 Her new apartment is dreamy too, minus the oddly persistent spider infestation。

Then Annie meets Sophie。 Beautiful, charming, magnetic Sophie, who takes a special interest in Annie, who wants to be her friend。 More importantly, she wants Annie to stop apologizing and start living for herself。 That's how Sophie lives。 Annie can't help but gravitate toward the self-possessed Sophie, wanting to spend more and more time with her, despite the fact that the rest of the townsfolk seem。。。a little afraid of her。 And like, okay。 There are some things。 Sophie's appearance is uncanny and ageless, her mansion in the middle of the woods feels a little unearthly, and she does seem to wield a certain power。。。but she couldn't be。。。could she?

I really enjoyed this book, it is a fun light hearted read with a bit of mystery。

It is not a thriller or horror in any sense at all。 However unlike other misrepresented books (*cough* verity *cough* Mexican gothic), I very much enjoyed the story。 If you’ve ever watched the good witch it is like that mixed with a bit of practical magic。 It is a cozy witch read, that is a slow burn of a story but a fast read, if that makes any sense。 The story is slow and honestly not too much happens but I ate it up。 In the end it is all about self acceptance and friendship。 I also think ther It is not a thriller or horror in any sense at all。 However unlike other misrepresented books (*cough* verity *cough* Mexican gothic), I very much enjoyed the story。 If you’ve ever watched the good witch it is like that mixed with a bit of practical magic。 It is a cozy witch read, that is a slow burn of a story but a fast read, if that makes any sense。 The story is slow and honestly not too much happens but I ate it up。 In the end it is all about self acceptance and friendship。 I also think there could be a second based on the ending。 Ask me when you’ve read it 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'd say this is horror-lite and more supernatural。 And book is more about self transformation, discovery, and growth than about witches, goblins, and curses。 I'd say this is horror-lite and more supernatural。 And book is more about self transformation, discovery, and growth than about witches, goblins, and curses。 。。。more

I enjoyed this book! It wasn’t really frightening or dark as the description suggested。 More of a witchy, whimsical light read。 I really liked how the book ended and thought it was fun read, though didn’t find much about the book shocking or thrilling per se。

“I think it’s the same as any job,” I say。 “Can be hard sometimes。 But that’s why there’s wine。” This was a fast cute read。Annie has a break up and decides to move to a small town。 Soon she meets Sophie, and it changes her life forever。 This book is about spiders, witches, friendships, and standing on your own two feet。It was not what I expected, but I definitely did enjoy it。

Vfields Don't touch my happy!

It took me 30 days to finish this book。 I couldn’t get comfortable with these women and Ralph。 I could see them, they were well crafted but I just couldn’t, no I didn’t commit to them。 I think this would make an excellent screenplay。 I think this would be perfect for audio/audible。 It just wasn’t my wheelhouse。

The author probably unironically wears a tee shirt that says "we're the daughters of the witches you didn't burn" or some laughably, spine-cringe inducing saying like that。 Massively boring book。 Absolutely skippable。 The author probably unironically wears a tee shirt that says "we're the daughters of the witches you didn't burn" or some laughably, spine-cringe inducing saying like that。 Massively boring book。 Absolutely skippable。 。。。more

3。5 stars。 Really slow to get going and fairly predictable as far as plot, but the last third was a satisfying read。 I also appreciate that this is a book about a deep platonic, if somewhat romantic, female friendship between a straight woman and a queer woman。 That kind of relationship is so rare in fiction, it was refreshing to see here。 I am happy to read lesbian romance, BTW, but it is important that this be shown as a profound and also asexual relationship。

Two words: unsettling & wholesome。 And no, that’s not a contradiction…

Cackle took me on a winding road, similar to the one to Sophie's house in the woods。 I didn't know where I'd end up, but it feels so GOOD to make it。 This novel broke out of every expectation that I had, making for a fabulously spooky and eerily empowering read。 Main character Annie gets exactly what she needs, rather than what she wants-- and it is uncomfortable and painful but rewarding, for both Annie and the reader。 Cackle took me on a winding road, similar to the one to Sophie's house in the woods。 I didn't know where I'd end up, but it feels so GOOD to make it。 This novel broke out of every expectation that I had, making for a fabulously spooky and eerily empowering read。 Main character Annie gets exactly what she needs, rather than what she wants-- and it is uncomfortable and painful but rewarding, for both Annie and the reader。 。。。more

If you want a Halloween book that isnt horror and has more of a cottagecore witch vibe, this is it。 I love this book so much, it’s the exact kind of fall book I’m always looking for。 I love the lesson it taught at the end and I love that every heartbroken girl can relate to the protagonist。

I’m conflicted on this book, because I loved the modernity of it mixed with the spookiness—it was nice to read about some witchy-ness without having to suffer through overly stylized, gothic language (which is often difficult for me to read)。 This book was a fun, fast page turner, but by the end I felt unsatisfied。 I understand part of friendship is navigating the ups and downs, but Sophie seemed extremely toxic to me from the start。 I felt that she was praised in the novel (and to be honest, th I’m conflicted on this book, because I loved the modernity of it mixed with the spookiness—it was nice to read about some witchy-ness without having to suffer through overly stylized, gothic language (which is often difficult for me to read)。 This book was a fun, fast page turner, but by the end I felt unsatisfied。 I understand part of friendship is navigating the ups and downs, but Sophie seemed extremely toxic to me from the start。 I felt that she was praised in the novel (and to be honest, the reviews as well), as this lovely friend who cared deeply about Annie。 And while she did of course do kind things, there were a lot of really harmful things she did that I felt were forgiven too quickly or not touched upon at all。 I felt that the author spent a lot of time describing Annie’s misery, and it became repetitive。 If some of those pages had gone into more depth about the girls’ feud and/or how they settled it, I think I would have felt more closure with this book overall。 Still fun!! If a book is witchy, I’m in! Annie is a recently single 30 year old woman attempting to start her life over。 She moves, gets a new apartment, a new job, and makes a new friend, Sophie, who just might be more than she appears。 The world of this novel is eerie and discomforting, with a satisfying build。 I will say that I found Annie tedious at times。 As a person who revels in singledom, I felt like I mirrored Sophie’s exasperation more than Annie’s emotional journey。 But anyone who has struggled w If a book is witchy, I’m in! I wish I could put into words how relatable I found Annie, a 30-year-old woman living on her own for the first time after a long-term relationship dissolves out of the blue but also not really out of the blue。 Like, eerily relatable。 Maybe Rachel Harrison lives inside my head。 She really does an incredible job of capturing the highs and lows of detaching yourself from someone you've tied so much to。 That, plus a cozy setting and witchy happenings and the blossoming of a really lovely and fun fri I wish I could put into words how relatable I found Annie, a 30-year-old woman living on her own for the first time after a long-term relationship dissolves out of the blue but also not really out of the blue。 Like, eerily relatable。 Maybe Rachel Harrison lives inside my head。 She really does an incredible job of capturing the highs and lows of detaching yourself from someone you've tied so much to。 That, plus a cozy setting and witchy happenings and the blossoming of a really lovely and fun friendship, made me completely fall in love with this story and also want to treat myself better。 I'm glad I purchased and didn't borrow (and I wish I had this book in 2019)。 Rachel Harrison is SO GOOD。 。。。more

This is the best book I’ve read in awhile。 The setting was perfect, the characters come alive。 I wanted to dive in and live there。 Besides being a perfect escape, it’s also incredibly meaningful。 Friendship & self-love。 I love this book so much。 Really special。

The book synopsis tries to convince you this is a dark, sexy witch tale。 It is anything but……nothing happens for the entirety of the book。 This is a poorly written book that tries to come across as an allegory for lesbianism and sexual freedom。 And it falls flat in every single attempt。 Anna, the main character, is boring and uninteresting。 She is written in an attempt to make her witty and non-chalant - but she is indifferent and increasingly grating。 She’s not intelligent。 There is nothing app The book synopsis tries to convince you this is a dark, sexy witch tale。 It is anything but……nothing happens for the entirety of the book。 This is a poorly written book that tries to come across as an allegory for lesbianism and sexual freedom。 And it falls flat in every single attempt。 Anna, the main character, is boring and uninteresting。 She is written in an attempt to make her witty and non-chalant - but she is indifferent and increasingly grating。 She’s not intelligent。 There is nothing appealing about her。 And how stupid can a female character be written?!?! The sheer amount of ridiculous similes used throughout the novel show how unskilled a writer Harrison truly is。 And for a book that’s supposed to be about witches - there’s literally no magic。 It’s not that the writer is nuanced or subtle - she just sucks at writing any type of interesting story。 And Dylan Moore’s narration does nothing to service the front - AT ALL。 There’s a reason this book was on Audible sale。 It sucks。 。。。more

And what’s more damming? That I live in the seclusion of the trees or that I live alone? Or that I’m happy about it all? That I’ve made these choices, that I have these gifts, and I embrace them? I’m not ashamed of who I am。 Of what I am。 What is it about a woman in full control of herself that is so utterly frightening?🕷 🕷 🕷

DNF。。the main character was annoying, the writing somewhat juvenile, and I couldn’t get into the story。 I made it 20% through。 To be fair, I was listening to the audiobook and didn’t care for the narrator。

3。5🕷️After seeing that this is the "Best Novel of 2021" by Ladies of Horror Fiction, I decided to read it。 While reading, I couldn't help thinking that it's more "chick lit with a side of witch"。 There's nothing horror about it at all, IMO, and I was thoroughly disappointed by that。 However, I did enjoy all the head noises the protagonist Annie went through in order for her to come to terms with herself and her capabilities, and for her to realise that she DOESN'T need a man's attention to eleva 3。5🕷️After seeing that this is the "Best Novel of 2021" by Ladies of Horror Fiction, I decided to read it。 While reading, I couldn't help thinking that it's more "chick lit with a side of witch"。 There's nothing horror about it at all, IMO, and I was thoroughly disappointed by that。 However, I did enjoy all the head noises the protagonist Annie went through in order for her to come to terms with herself and her capabilities, and for her to realise that she DOESN'T need a man's attention to elevate her self worth; that she's fine just the way she is。 Overall it's a nice story about two friends with a side of witchcraft。 *cackles* 。。。more
