This book did not live up to the hype at all for me。 I found it very boring & slow。。 I forced myself to finish because I heard the ending was worth it but it was just eh。。 I regret wasting my time on this one。

An amazing story from start to finish。 The creative use of the timeline and characters keeps you intrigued to keep reading。

I really enjoyed it。 Reminded me a lot of life after life by kate Atkinson and the time travelers wife。 I found the ending a bit anticlimactic - but the author did do a good job of setting it up so it wasn’t wholly unexpected。

2 ⭐️ I can’t believe I’m writing this as my review for this book。 I am so disappointed in this book。 What was this? What am I missing?! I thought for sure, with how popular and well-liked this book seems to be, that it would be a 5 star for me。 Addie was missing something。 Her personality was just nonexistent, she was so bland。 I wanted to like her so much, but it just didn’t happen。 The star of this book was 100% Henry。 I couldn’t get enough of his storyline, and I did enjoy the ‘twist’ in his 2 ⭐️ I can’t believe I’m writing this as my review for this book。 I am so disappointed in this book。 What was this? This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I grew to love this book。 You have to let go of reality and embrace immortality and deals with (and seemingly good sex as he his handsome) the devil, and it dragged in the middle when I became preoccupy with where she was going to sleep every night。 But it was beautiful in the end, and was such a relief that Henry remembered her。 Makes you wonder when, in anyone’s life, one might have made a deal with the devil if asked。。。?

So unbelievably good。 The story line was incredible。 Still tears a hole in my heart every time I think of it。 The relationships that the author makes between the characters is impeccable。 I wished I would have read it in one sitting to have the full impact of the writing。 The only complaint I have is I wished Schwab would have edited out the last chapter。 I feel liked the readers would have been left off at a better place if it wasn't there。 Other than that it was truly an amazing read。 So unbelievably good。 The story line was incredible。 Still tears a hole in my heart every time I think of it。 The relationships that the author makes between the characters is impeccable。 I wished I would have read it in one sitting to have the full impact of the writing。 The only complaint I have is I wished Schwab would have edited out the last chapter。 I feel liked the readers would have been left off at a better place if it wasn't there。 Other than that it was truly an amazing read。 。。。more

Sucked me right into all the plot twists and turns, history and art, thoughts on what ideas are and how marks are made in life。 Such cool devices, mixing old stories and historical events with contemporary romance。 Hats off to an author who can incorporate diversity in race, relationship norms, etc。 without it seeming forced。 Her characters seemed like themselves, without ticking anyone's boxes。 Very fun, would recommend as a great escape!! This may be an unpopular rating, and while I thought that this book somewhat lived up to the hype, it was just soooooo long and so sad。 Part of the problem may have been that I listened on audio, and I would NOT recommend!! This book was made for a movie or miniseries adaptation, and I have no doubt we’ll be seeing that soon! Overall, great idea for a story with a good ending and great character building, just needed some editing。 。。。more

I have a lot of feelings about this book。 At the end of 2019 I read The Near Witch and fell in love with Schwab's storytelling。 I then proceeded to read the Shades of Magic series and so I was super excited when I heard that Addie was coming out in October。 I'll say that it may have been a little too hyped up。 Don't get me wrong, I did love the story and I found myself wanting to be Addie's friend。 I loved Schwab's descriptions, they really pull me into the story。 My favorite parts were when Add I have a lot of feelings about this book。 At the end of 2019 I read The Near Witch and fell in love with Schwab's storytelling。 I then proceeded to read the Shades of Magic series and so I was super excited when I heard that Addie was coming out in October。 I'll say that it may have been a little too hyped up。 Don't get me wrong, I did love the story and I found myself wanting to be Addie's friend。 I loved Schwab's descriptions, they really pull me into the story。 My favorite parts were when Addie was in the past and we got glimpses about what that was like。 Now this is the hard part。 I didn't really like Henry。 I also had mixed feelings about Luc。 And then there's the whole thing about Addie selling her soul to the devil 😬 I don't like that either but it was super interesting seeing how Addie and Luc's relationship progressed。 I really did love seeing how much that changed over the years。 But yeah, I wasn't a fan of the section that was about Henry。 I found it boring and he just made me sad。 It was depressing to read his parts。I didn't cry like I thought I would at the ending。 But it was a good ending(for the most part) I liked finding out that it was written as if Henry wrote Addie's parts。 That was cute。 But the final paragraphs or so with Addie still being stuck in a relationship with Luc was sad and like sure she might have found a loophole but it didn't sound promising。 I guess I just found it hard that it wasn't really a happy ending。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Simply breath-taking, a story of humanity & hope。 To push the boundaries of happiness is not to come without consequences。 The old story of making a deal with the devil to get what you desire reimagined。 Addie LaRue does send you not only on a journey, but makes you hope as much as Addie does。 The book is going to be quit unforgettable for me, and that’s the way Addie would want it。

I’m not sure if the gushing that people have made about this book ruined it for me。 Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book- I enjoyed it。 I really did。 However, I was expecting myself to cry or to feel grief- just something that would /hurt/。 Again, it’s still a very good book and the plot is very good。 I love Addie, Henry, and even Luc (I know it’s weird)。 Their characterization were so interesting to read and learn more about。

Kristen

The first half of the book was very slow and boring。 And right at the middle, it got REALLY interesting and fun and intriguing! By the end, I was really satisfied with the book, but it took me a long time to commit to actually finishing the book。 I’m glad I did!

"They look at you and see whatever they want。。。Because they don't see you at all。" I like this story。 It’s an easy read with a timeless premise - Faustian bargain with the devil - that grabbed me from the beginning, and the writing flows well。 The author does a great job of capturing the bittersweet passage of time, describing Addie's freedom and anticipation for the future balanced against the sadness of losing her relationships and all that she's known。 It’s too bad that I lost interest for th "They look at you and see whatever they want。。。Because they don't see you at all。" I like this story。 It’s an easy read with a timeless premise - Faustian bargain with the devil - that grabbed me from the beginning, and the writing flows well。 The author does a great job of capturing the bittersweet passage of time, describing Addie's freedom and anticipation for the future balanced against the sadness of losing her relationships and all that she's known。 It’s too bad that I lost interest for the middle 300 pages, but I needed to get through it for a book club or would have skipped through to the end。 It feels like there’s unnecessary back story on Addie’s love interest Henry and flashback scenes that are repetitive and don’t build anticipation for the ending。 。。。more

Though this book seems slow the build up was worth it。 The meaning, the ideas, the words and the concepts they place in our heads is perfect every part of this book is perfect and sad and wonderful。 It deserves all the praise it has gotten and deserves so much more。 I cannot express how much I love this book and how much I cried finishing it。 But it is a story that will definitely live on in my heart and in my memory forever。

El principio no me pareció muy interesante, pero conforme iba leyendo me iba interesando más, el final, no me fascinó, lo que salvó el libro para mí, fueron ciertas frases y momentos muy bonitos que tuve que marcar。

3。2 I wanted to like this book。 I really tried。 The beginning had me hooked, the plot was intriguing, the writing is beautiful, and there was lots of character building for Addie。 However I felt that once the love interest entered the scene, it was 200 (IMO useless) pages of Addie meandering and backstories that added nothing to the plot or development of the story。 I struggled to finish。

Hope

Took a little while to get into it and then I couldn’t put it down。 The story and writing just captivated me。 This is one that will stay with me for awhile

I’m genuinely mad that I wasted my time with this book。 Supremely overhyped and it should have been about 200 pages shorter。

It’s hard to rate this book。 There were parts where I LOVED it, there are profound moments that I highlighted so I could go back to those words and feel the weight of them。 But a lot of this story seemed to drag on and on and I got frustrated with how long it was taking to get to the point。 The last 100 pages were incredible and that’s what I wanted the whole book to be like, once it finally got good it was over。 I think some people will love this book and some will absolutely loathe every part It’s hard to rate this book。 There were parts where I LOVED it, there are profound moments that I highlighted so I could go back to those words and feel the weight of them。 But a lot of this story seemed to drag on and on and I got frustrated with how long it was taking to get to the point。 The last 100 pages were incredible and that’s what I wanted the whole book to be like, once it finally got good it was over。 I think some people will love this book and some will absolutely loathe every part of it。 。。。more

This was a 3 1/2 star for me。 It was a slow start for me。。。 taking a good 100+ pages to get into it。 I do think that this would make a great mini series。。。 I think best told not by jumping back-and-forth in time but from beginning to end。 I would LOVE to see some of the hidden secret places portrayed on screen。At 23, Addie LaRue looks to be forced into a marriage she doesn’t want。 She mistakenly makes a deal with the darkness of the devil。 And he grants her wish… Addie will live a life of advent This was a 3 1/2 star for me。 It was a slow start for me。。。 taking a good 100+ pages to get into it。 I do think that this would make a great mini series。。。 I think best told not by jumping back-and-forth in time but from beginning to end。 I would LOVE to see some of the hidden secret places portrayed on screen。At 23, Addie LaRue looks to be forced into a marriage she doesn’t want。 She mistakenly makes a deal with the darkness of the devil。 And he grants her wish… Addie will live a life of adventure and freedom。 The dark puts a twist on it… No one will ever remember her again。 So for the next 300 years, she remains 23 and she roams the world alone unable to be have true relationships beyond a single day。 Until one day, someone remembers her。 。。。more

4。5/5 -- pretty good fantasy / historical fiction。 I read this a bit slowly and had to re-read some parts a few times to remind myself of what had happened。 Well-written, definitely made me think about it a bit afterwards。

A beautiful balance of whimsical and introspective。 Short chapters make it easy to pause and pick up again, if you don’t just read it all in one sitting。 Loved this book
