Summary

Two girls on opposite sides of a war discover they're fighting for a common purpose—and falling for each other—in Zoe Hana Mikuta's high-octane debut Gearbreakers, perfect for fans of Pacific Rim, Pierce Brown's Red Rising Saga, and Marie Lu's Legend series。

We went past praying to deities and started to build them instead。。。

The shadow of Godolia's tyrannical rule is spreading, aided by their giant mechanized weapons known as Windups。 War and oppression are everyday constants for the people of the Badlands, who live under the thumb of their cruel Godolia overlords。

Eris Shindanai is a Gearbreaker, a brash young rebel who specializes in taking down Windups from the inside。 When one of her missions goes awry and she finds herself in a Godolia prison, Eris meets Sona Steelcrest, a cybernetically enhanced Windup pilot。 At first Eris sees Sona as her mortal enemy, but Sona has a secret: She has intentionally infiltrated the Windup program to destroy Godolia from within。

As the clock ticks down to their deadliest mission yet, a direct attack to end Godolia's reign once and for all, Eris and Sona grow closer—as comrades, friends, and perhaps something more。。。

Praise for Gearbreakers:

"An absolute joyride of a story set in a vivid, arresting world。 Gearbreakers is sci-fi at its very finest, combining the grandeur of mecha fighting machines with the intimacy of (splendidly feral) found family。 Zoe Hana Mikuta is a talent to be in awe of。" —Chloe Gong, New York Times-bestselling author of These Violent Delights

This book was awesome! I love the found family trope and this book did it beautifully!!

3。5⭐️The worldbuilding is very interesting and I really hope it’s explored more in the second book! I didn’t really feel any chemistry between the love interests though (also it felt a bit strange that 1 of them was in a committed relationship (?) for most of the book)。 Also the amount of “you don’t have my permission to die” lines made me roll my eyes。 Will most likely continue the series though!

I honestly don’t know what happened here。 I like Pacific Rim, I like queer found family, I like mechas and sci fi in general。 I individually like almost every element this book was supposed to have。 But the actual story just gave me nothing。 If you’re looking for a queer, spite filled protagonist pilot of a mecha trying to overthrow a corrupt system, just read Iron Widow instead because it honestly feels like this book was just an attempt to emulate that unsuccessfully。 *disclaimer that I understand this is a debut so I wanna be clear that I’d be happy to read more of this authors work in the future when she works on some of her plotting and character development issues because honestly her writing style is pretty enjoyable。 I just don’t think I’ll be continuing this particular series。 。。。more

I'm DNF'ing this at ca。 10% for now。Honestly, it's way too YA for me。 One of the protagonists is so overly melodramatic that it's unintentionally hilarious, while the other is obnoxious。 I'll try to finish it at a later date, but, for now。。。 nah。 I'm DNF'ing this at ca。 10% for now。Honestly, it's way too YA for me。 One of the protagonists is so overly melodramatic that it's unintentionally hilarious, while the other is obnoxious。 I'll try to finish it at a later date, but, for now。。。 nah。 。。。more

I loved this book! Wonderful wlw romance, BEAUTIFUL prose, giant robots, alternating POVs (with very distinct voices), and found family trope! I loved the sci-fi aspects, but the highlight of the book was the growing romance between Sona and Eris。 Lots of tension + fierce connection = perfect queer slow burn。I especially loved Sona's chapters。 Both Sona and Eris have very unique voices, but I just happen to like Sona's more。 Even in Eris' chapters, Sona stole the show with her dialogue。 Every ti I loved this book! 3。75/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This book had me divided on my opinions and feelings ga up until the last page。 While I objectively had some serious issues with the pacing, characters and science, the vibes and world were so interesting that it kept me interested until the very end。 I think this was a great effort for a debut novel。 I was absolutely here for the big robots and righteously angry teenagers taking down a tyrannical dystopian society。 The world Mikuta created was vibrant and interesting and I loved 3。75/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ This book had me divided on my opinions and feelings ga up until the last page。 While I objectively had some serious issues with the pacing, characters and science, the vibes and world were so interesting that it kept me interested until the very end。 I think this was a great effort for a debut novel。 I was absolutely here for the big robots and righteously angry teenagers taking down a tyrannical dystopian society。 The world Mikuta created was vibrant and interesting and I loved see women kick some butt。 Moreso, I think Sona and Eris were great protagonists and I really appreciated getting to see from both their perspectives on this society。 Plus their (incredibly) slow burn romance was super cute and nice not to be at the forefront of the story。 However, I had some serious issues with the pacing of this novel。 I felt like it jumped between high octane energy to slow burn recuperation very fast。 Ultimately I think 50 pages could have been cut without effecting the overall story。 Now this may have been my fault for reading it over a longer period, but I keep confusing the characters and whose perspective I was reading from。 I felt that while the protagonists did have a similar personal voice, the side characters that almost blended together。 Also, having read this off the back of Andy Weir the science felt very loosey goosey and not entirely sound, but for a fantasy YA that is able to be overlooked。 Lastly, I do prefer a little more fire in my romance and would have entirely believe them to be platonic all in love as much as romantically。That being said I was absolutely interested in the story and will need to read the sequel to see how the story ends。 If you like fierce female characters, big robots, a slow burn and no spice romance, and taking down totalitarian regimes then this is the book for you。 。。。more

Sapphic cyberpunk love story wrapped in a "crush the awful government" dystopia! I really liked the idea of the gearbreakers - because mechas wouldn't be invulnerable once you get inside, you can go in and break the important bits and down they come。 Possibly that's a metaphor for a few people in the right place being able to take down a corrupt government, I don't know。 But it was very satisfying。 I really liked the main characters too, especially Sona。 Her voice was great。 Sapphic cyberpunk love story wrapped in a "crush the awful government" dystopia! 4。5!! I was initially not too into this at the beginning, but wanted to keep reading to see what happened and I am so glad I did。 this reminds me of a mix between overwatch and the spy kids 3 movie lol -I think the writing is beautiful but takes a second to get used to。 I also think this is one of my fave sapphic romances - I will read anything for sapphics, and I root for them in every book but damn - the way Eris and Sona interacted and without any spoilers: was amazing - it was not insta love 4。5!! Hmmmmmm very good。 Lots of oppression by big scary government and torture as a side effect but beyond that。。。。。I really loved it!There were some issues with pacing, such as jumping forward and skipping an entire battle, or days going by and it being unclear why or how long truly passed。 Beyond that it was a really solid debut from a young author, and I am eagerly anticipating the second book coming in at my library soon!!

Actual rating: 2。5 stars2 stars for Jenny。 0。5 stars for the cool mecha concept。 Everything else didn't quite hit。 The story picks up around 20% into the book, and while it was interesting, the clunky writing made it really hard for me to enjoy the book。 The last 2 chapters hit REALLY hard, but I'm still not sure if I'd pick up the sequel。 Actual rating: 2。5 stars2 stars for Jenny。 0。5 stars for the cool mecha concept。 Everything else didn't quite hit。 The story picks up around 20% into the book, and while it was interesting, the clunky writing made it really hard for me to enjoy the book。 The last 2 chapters hit REALLY hard, but I'm still not sure if I'd pick up the sequel。 。。。more

Like the best she got was just trying to run away what she could've done before a million times over? Also later, literally all she did was follow other people's plan, she was so so passive all while being described as a very strong and proactive personality。 Very conflicted on if i want to continue with the next book, since the end just seems to set up book two to be the exact same as this one, with the focus being on Eris and Sona being on opposing sites (or at least not being able to trust each other) and then somehow finding to each other anyways because *love* i guess? This book/series had so much potential for complex world-building and intricate master plans but it really disappointed on that front, and instead just spend all that time on solving the trust issue between Sona and Eris (but not even in a very appealing way) and now that will be again the main theme in the next book? Like the big fight everything was building up to was literally like two pages。。 。。。more
