Summary

Flash Fire is the explosive sequel to The Extraordinaries by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author TJ Klune!

Through bravery, charm, and an alarming amount of enthusiasm, Nick landed himself the superhero boyfriend of his dreams。 Now instead of just writing stories about him, Nick actually gets to kiss him。 On the mouth。 A lot。 But having a superhero boyfriend isn’t everything Nick thought it would be—he’s still struggling to make peace with his own lack of extraordinary powers。

When new Extraordinaries begin arriving in Nova City—siblings who can manipulate smoke and ice, a mysterious hero who can move objects with their mind, and a drag queen superhero with the best name and the most-sequined costume anyone has ever had—it’s up to Nick and his friends Seth, Gibby, and Jazz to determine who is virtuous and who is villainous。

And new Extraordinaries aren’t the only things coming to light。 Long-held secrets and neglected truths are surfacing that challenge everything Nick knows about justice, family, and being extraordinary。 Which is a lot to handle when Nick really just wants to finish his self-insert bakery AU fanfic。

Will it all come together in the end or will it all go down in flames?

So, this is young adult fiction - really for young gay men I think with lots of sexual references but no real sex。 Kind of like the young male mind。。。。 It's the second in his Extraordinaries series。 I laughed so hard in this book because from an adult view, it was hilariously funny and fun。 The main character is ADHD and the view into his mind is fascinating。 And his relationships with the adults around him, so heartwarming even when he is pissed off, which leads to all kinds of supernatural stu So, this is young adult fiction - really for young gay men I think with lots of sexual references but no real sex。 Kind of like the young male mind。。。。 It's the second in his Extraordinaries series。 I laughed so hard in this book because from an adult view, it was hilariously funny and fun。 The main character is ADHD and the view into his mind is fascinating。 And his relationships with the adults around him, so heartwarming even when he is pissed off, which leads to all kinds of supernatural stuff。 Definitely a fun read, especially for anyone who loves superheroes, but I would not recommend for pre-puberty。 :) 。。。more

So good, better than the first book in the series by a long shot。 Made me laugh and cry and blush all at the same time。 Plot twists I never saw coming and an amazing story with well flesh out characters。

Dare I say I loved this one more than book 1!? Solid 5⭐️ read for me! TJ Klune had this ability to write with such heart, conviction, humor, and emotion that I rollercoaster through all of the emotions before the book ends every time! Their were some major issues brought up in book 1 from reviewers and I was amazed at how head on TJ Klune was able to handle and tackle those topics in a way that still felt natural for the story! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻That ending- I can’t can’t wait for book 3! I need it asap!

I'm not surprised that I absolutely adored this book。 TJ Klune writes such lovable characters thats its easy to get emotionally invested in their stories。 This series has so much humor but is also sprinkled in with deeper & darker discussions such as grief, mental illness, and sexuality。I highly suggest listening to audiobook because it is just fantastic! The ending drew a very scary and real parallel to the trials that LGBTQ+ individuals go through every day and I got chills during the epilogue。 This is perfectly campy, unique, and important。 I want this book to become popular and receive all the accolades that it deserves。 There’s a lot of good stuff to digest with this story I’m just excited to get my hands on the third one。 P。S。: the audio book for this story is 4。5 Stars“Nickie no!”“Nickie yyyeessssss!”Seriously TJ Klune, this book is a yes! 4。5 StarsAs with most Klune-penned books, I never cease to be captivated by the storytelling or the sheer brilliance of the writing quality he dishes out。 This may be on the lighter side of Klune’s recent repertoire, sure, but it’s no less impressive, blending joy, hilarity and pure entertainment with themes that engage and representation that matters。 This particular series is aimed more at younger readers, with its queer-positive teen leads, but it crosses generational lines and shouldn’t be n 4。5 StarsAs with most Klune-penned books, I never cease to be captivated by the storytelling or the sheer brilliance of the writing quality he dishes out。 This may be on the lighter side of Klune’s recent repertoire, sure, but it’s no less impressive, blending joy, hilarity and pure entertainment with themes that engage and representation that matters。 This particular series is aimed more at younger readers, with its queer-positive teen leads, but it crosses generational lines and shouldn’t be narrowed down to a YA demographic。 I’m twenty years past my teens and this still entertained me fully and read as keenly relevant to the times we live in, even with the fantastical superhero trope within。In this sequel, newly coupled Nick and Seth, along with their slew of dedicated friends and family, are continuing to fight the good fight, secret powers and identities included, to help make Nova City a better, safer place。 Making change is at the forefront of their fight against power-hungry individuals, unaccountable government officials, corrupt police and disgusting journalistic bias, which, although extreme and fantastical in its implications here, are still very much things we in RL see and deal with all the damn time in recent years。Beyond the politics and the literal fight for their lives, Nick and Seth remain one of the cutest pairings I’ve read in the YA genre this decade。 Nick is still as unfiltered as ever and hilarious for it, and Seth is perhaps even more geek-sexy than before, both finding their way as boyfriends, and dealing with a hell of a lot more in their day to day lives than most teenagers could even comprehend。 But they do so well, even if there is some fumbling and awkwardness in the execution, it's the good intentions that count。Like with book one, I loved the humour present—think of Klune’s earlier brilliant and hilarious series, like Bear, Otter, and the Kid or At First Sight, only slightly less outrageous and slightly more suitable for a younger audience (shame that, LOL)。 Nick is nothing if not a classic Klune archetype, following hilariously in Sam, Paul and Bear’s footsteps, as he deals with the trials and tribulations of life and love, all while being a bit “extra” and all the more wonderful for it。At the end of the day, I enjoyed Flash Fire a great deal。 If the aim of any sequel is to surpass its predecessor on all counts, this one did just that。 With more action, bigger reveals, more romance, greater character development and increased emotional engagement, Flash Fire is the stronger, more satisfying of the first two books in The Extraordinaries series。 I have no doubt book three (Heat Wave) will take this series to even newer and grander heights, and I can’t wait to see how it's done! 。。。more

At this point, I'm not sure。 I want to believe that the last book will go back to what makes him so great。 I am going to continue to hope for that。 。。。more

This, I think, had classic book 2 syndrome。 It was good, but not as good as the first one and the rating could go up or down depending on how the series ends。 I thought some of the opening of the book around the police and racism, while needed, was ham-handed。 Not as subtle or meaningful as I've come to expect from Klune。 I get that he was course correcting from the hero worship of police in the first book but it felt clunky。 I get that Nicky was really wrestling with these ideas but it felt lik This, I think, had classic book 2 syndrome。 It was good, but not as good as the first one and the rating could go up or down depending on how the series ends。 I thought some of the opening of the book around the police and racism, while needed, was ham-handed。 Not as subtle or meaningful as I've come to expect from Klune。 I get that he was course correcting from the hero worship of police in the first book but it felt clunky。 I get that Nicky was really wrestling with these ideas but it felt like the author was being very obvious and not trusting the reader with something more nuanced。 I am glad to see less of Nick's fan fiction, though it did make me laugh out loud in parts! I love Seth Grey so much, and he deserves the world。 I really enjoyed this follow up to The Extraordinaries but my one complaint that made me unable to give it 5 stars is that it got really heavy with real world issues, which are super valid and important, and I appreciate the author incorporating it, but I felt it was a rather abrupt difference from the first novel, and since I read these back to back (rereading the first so I could read this), it just was a little more jarring。 All in all thou I love Seth Grey so much, and he deserves the world。 I really enjoyed this follow up to The Extraordinaries but my one complaint that made me unable to give it 5 stars is that it got really heavy with real world issues, which are super valid and important, and I appreciate the author incorporating it, but I felt it was a rather abrupt difference from the first novel, and since I read these back to back (rereading the first so I could read this), it just was a little more jarring。 All in all though, I love this series and I cannot wait for the next book!
