Summary

Two criminal empires together control all of New England。

Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire。

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun。 But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself。 To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die。

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing。 The winner will forge a dynasty。

Really 4。75 stars。 I really liked this book。 The pacing was fast, the characters were entertaining, the writing had that cinematic 'Puzo' feel。 I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy。 Really 4。75 stars。 I really liked this book。 The pacing was fast, the characters were entertaining, the writing had that cinematic 'Puzo' feel。 I can't wait to read the next book in the trilogy。 。。。more

It was fun to read this right after reading the Godfather。 I liked this much more。 Don Winslow is such a badass at what he does。 This is short novel about the Irish vs Italian mobs in Rhode Island。 You give a crap about the characters。 Most folks are gray, not black or white。 And you never knew who was double crossing whom。 Super good, Donny!

This was my first Don Winslow book, but it will DEFINITELY not be my last! This book is phenomenal and sucks you in from the first page。 Danny Ryan is married into an Irish mafia family in Rhode Island when his brother in law Liam does something that sends them hurdling down a path toward a war with the Italians。 City on fire is exactly that FIRE! I could not stop listening, Ari Fliakos does an outstanding job here, I was reminded a lot of the late great Ray Liota in goodfellas while listening t This was my first Don Winslow book, but it will DEFINITELY not be my last! The Irish of Mystic River meet the Italians of Tony Soprano in a great tale of the mob in the mid to late 80’s Providence。 The opening salvo in a Danny Ryan trilogy, this is Don Winslow back to basics after cementing his reputation with the Border trilogy it immediately feels much more pared back, essentially a straight story told brilliantly。 While wrapped upIn Greek mythology the story of the Ryan’s and Murphy’s fighting the morettis over the standard mob territory, I loved it。

Irish and Italian mobs go to head and head as alliances are made and broken。 No one seemed to really care about anyone in here except for the protagonist and his wife。 They're all rude assholes。 Read my crime thrillers Irish and Italian mobs go to head and head as alliances are made and broken。 No one seemed to really care about anyone in here except for the protagonist and his wife。 They're all rude assholes。 Read my crime thrillers 。。。more

Finalmente un #crime come si deve in pieno stile Don Winslow e, soprattutto, non finisce qui。

It's a mystery to me why Don Winslow used street-slang grammar (e。g。, he don't ever, etc) throughout this book in both the dialogue and the narrative, but it didn't really diminish the power of the storytelling that Winslow is so noted for in his other books, although it did interrupt my train of thought。 This probably comes from being educated in English grammar by the nuns and priests who maintained that if a person could write, read, and spell English well, they were doomed。Here's gist: Danny It's a mystery to me why Don Winslow used street-slang grammar (e。g。, he don't ever, etc) throughout this book in both the dialogue and the narrative, but it didn't really diminish the power of the storytelling that Winslow is so noted for in his other books, although it did interrupt my train of thought。 This probably comes from being educated in English grammar by the nuns and priests who maintained that if a person could write, read, and spell English well, they were doomed。Here's gist: Danny Ryan sees a beautiful woman on a Goshen, Rhode Island, beach (just across the channel from Block Island) and says to himself "she is going to be trouble。"Indeed, while she may not be the cause of the trouble, the woman's relationship with Liam Murphy creates trouble, and the story takes off from there with the Irish and Italian mobs of Providence carving each other up。This is the first of a trilogy, and I anxiously await the next installment。 Like other Winslow books I've read, I only put this down to eat, sleep, exercise, and watch my nightly BBC video of Midsomer Murder or The Thick of It。 Winslow has it goin' on when it comes to crime fiction writing。 。。。more

Super! Loved that it took place in Rhode Island! Many twists and turns…keeps you on the edge of your seat。 Looking forward to book two。

This is the first book of a trilogy by Don Winslow, one of my favourite authors。It introduces Danny Ryan, a longshoreman who finds himself in the middle of a turf war between rival factions in Rhode Island。 All Danny wants to do is move away, keep his family safe and start over again far away from gang warfare and killing but it is not an easy thing to do。I really enjoyed this novel and look forward to book two in the trilogy。

Once in a while you finish a book and you immediately want tot start reading it again。I knew D。W。 was a great writer and this book proves it once more。 This is GREAT stuff。 And now I have to wait a year for the second part of the trilogy? A dark and gritty novel about the Mob in New England。 Full of vivid characterizations, unexpected twists and brutal violence。 A propulsive read that grabs you from the start。

I love/hate Don Wilson's books。 Love because he is the best at this kind of stuff。 Fast pacing, great characters, immersive story lines, he's got no competition。 Hate because for some reason I read his books ten times faster than I read anything else and I hate having to wait until he releases another book。 City on Fire is as good as anything he's done and Winslow's written some winners。 After a pretty light hearted start with the characters vacationing and shit, things go downhill rapidly。 Lots I love/hate Don Wilson's books。 Love because he is the best at this kind of stuff。 Fast pacing, great characters, immersive story lines, he's got no competition。 Hate because for some reason I read his books ten times faster than I read anything else and I hate having to wait until he releases another book。 City on Fire is as good as anything he's done and Winslow's written some winners。 After a pretty light hearted start with the characters vacationing and shit, things go downhill rapidly。 Lots of morally ambiguous people stuck in dead end situations makes for exciting reading。 Lots of stuff happens in this book as it spans a couple of years and it's hard to believe this is the first in a proposed trilogy because it has a very satisfying conclusion and seemed like a complete story。 Waaaaay looking forward to book two and finding out what goes down。 。。。more

3-3/4 starsMan, I really struggled with the first half of this book -- meeting all the characters, establishing the hierarchy, etc。 But once I hit that halfway mark, things really picked up and I was totally engaged in what was happening。 The second part of the book just felt like an entirely different tone and pace。 Most of these characters are ones that are easy to dislike, so I almost took a certain enjoyment/satisfaction when they got their comeuppance。 However, Danny Ryan was a protagonist 3-3/4 starsMan, I really struggled with the first half of this book -- meeting all the characters, establishing the hierarchy, etc。 But once I hit that halfway mark, things really picked up and I was totally engaged in what was happening。 The second part of the book just felt like an entirely different tone and pace。 Most of these characters are ones that are easy to dislike, so I almost took a certain enjoyment/satisfaction when they got their comeuppance。 However, Danny Ryan was a protagonist that I was rooting for throughout the story (even when I had to think, "Oh, don't do thaaattt" more than once at some of his choices)。 My one big complaint, and reason I couldn't give this four stars, was the author's choice to write in the style most of these thug characters probably would actually speak。 I can understand using that technique if it's the character's actual words in quotation marks。 However, every time I read a sentence containing the words, for example, "。。。but he don't care。。 " instead of doesn't, it was like nails on a chalkboard。 I am by no means an expert at grammar, but there are some things that are just glaringly wrong。。。not to mention irritating as hell。 I did not enjoy that style of writing at all。So after a rocky first half, I sailed right through the rest of this book。 I definitely enjoyed it enough to have already added the second book in the trilogy to my To Read shelf。 。。。more

This is the kind of book we have learned to expect from this author, and he does it perfectly。 What I especially like is the way the third person narrative (e。g。, “he don’t believe 。 。 。 。”) matches the actual “mobster-style” dialogue of the characters—the reader is immersed in that world throughout the novel。 The next two books in this three-part story are said to be written, but we ordinary readers will need to wait until 4/23 and 4/24 to enjoy them。

I wanted to like this book。 I wanted to *love* this book。 But。。。The story, while compelling, is more Mafia melodrama。 The characters lack depth, and often behave in ways that don't make sense。 Often, for the purposes of the plot, the characters behave as if they were not nearly as bright as they have been described previously。 I have a problem when the plot turns on the instant stupidity of a character。 My understanding is that this is the start of a trilogy。 I'm sure Winslow has it mapped out o I wanted to like this book。 I wanted to *love* this book。 But。。。The story, while compelling, is more Mafia melodrama。 The characters lack depth, and often behave in ways that don't make sense。 Often, for the purposes of the plot, the characters behave as if they were not nearly as bright as they have been described previously。 I have a problem when the plot turns on the instant stupidity of a character。 My understanding is that this is the start of a trilogy。 I'm sure Winslow has it mapped out on a while board in his office, with story beats and twists carefully scheduled for maximum effect。 I guess it felt kind of artificial and shallow to me。And then there's his writer's tic of substituting "don't" for "doesn't" throughout the book, along with the other language things he does to try to put inside of his character's heads。 Every time I saw a sentence like "Danny don't care。" it just bumped out of the narrative and made me totally aware that Winslow was trying to push my buttons。And, I have the impression Winslow has no idea that a 1984 Dodge Charger was not a muscle car, but in fact a small Dodge Omni spinoff with all of the power of two lawn mowers strapped together。 Not much of a getaway car。 。。。more

DNF- I'm a big fan of Winslow and knowing this is going to be his final series, I may circle back to it but the start was rough。 And frankly, while I love some of his books, he's been hit or miss with me。 This was such a rough start that I didn't feel like moving onward。 But maybe down the road I'll revisit。 DNF- I'm a big fan of Winslow and knowing this is going to be his final series, I may circle back to it but the start was rough。 And frankly, while I love some of his books, he's been hit or miss with me。 This was such a rough start that I didn't feel like moving onward。 But maybe down the road I'll revisit。 。。。more

Full disclosure: Over the years, I've read (and frequently reread) almost everything Don Winslow has written。 Always can count on a really good story and City on Fire is no exception。 This is an grossing organized crime thriller that had me from page one。 Lots of action, great characters (especially Danny), and a good pace to the book。 Can't wait to see what's next in store in this series。A won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 Full disclosure: Over the years, I've read (and frequently reread) almost everything Don Winslow has written。 Always can count on a really good story and City on Fire is no exception。 This is an grossing organized crime thriller that had me from page one。 Lots of action, great characters (especially Danny), and a good pace to the book。 Can't wait to see what's next in store in this series。A won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 。。。more

An exceptional book for the genre。 Like dominos falling the grievances between two crime families build into all-out war。 This is a world of secret alliances, low deals, double crosses, strange codes of honour and behaviour。 The pace is fast, kept grounded by well-chosen detail and clever characterisation。 Highly recommended。

Winslow delivers a brilliantly plotted and relentlessly propulsive crime thriller that is fortunately the first of a trilogy。。。very much looking forward to Entry 2 in the Danny Ryan saga。
