Summary

Merida goes on an all-new, life-changing adventure in this original YA novel set several years after the close of Brave!

What if you had one year to save everything you loved?

ONE PRINCESS。 Merida of DunBroch needs a change。 She loves her family—jovial King Fergus, proper Queen Elinor, the mischievous triplets— and her peaceful kingdom。 But she’s frustrated by its sluggishness; each day, the same。 Merida longs for adventure, purpose, challenge – maybe even, someday, love。

TWO GODS。 But the fiery Princess never expects her disquiet to manifest by way of Feradach, an uncanny supernatural being tasked with rooting out rot and stagnation, who appears in DunBroch on Christmas Eve with the intent to demolish the realm – and everyone within。 Only the intervention of the Cailleach, an ancient entity of creation, gives Merida a shred of hope: convince her family to change within the year – or suffer the eternal consequences。

THREE VOYAGES。 Under the watchful eyes of the gods, Merida leads a series of epic journeys to kingdoms near and far in an attempt to inspire revolution within her family。 But in her efforts to save those she loves from ruin, has Merida lost sight of the Clan member grown most stagnant of all – herself?

FOUR SEASONS TO SAVE DUNBROCH – OR SEE IT DESTROYED, FOREVER。

This was such a lovely read! Also well done to who ever designed the cover because it’s stunning。 This was a great sequel to Brave, the flow of the story was beautiful, the writing was immaculate and it had a great meaning。 Not a hard story to read, but a delightful novel with all of Merida’s personality captured brilliantly, along with her family and their surroundings。 Fans of the film should certainly read this novel。 It was very heartwarming。

I wish this book was so much longer。 I don’t know what to read next! I’m left with such a nostalgic feeling。

What the f**k!?!??!! I was promised voyages!!! I thought that meant traveling adventure story but all I got was a few pages of travel and oh look somewhere different then a hell of a lot is Merida moaning and moping around the castle。 And don’t even get me started in that ending。 Unsatisfactory is an understatement。 Wouldn’t waste money or time on this。

I mean, it’s basically a middle grade Maggie book。 So it’s perfect for a middle grade book, because she can’t help herself but be excellent in basically anything she does。 One star is taken off for 1) typos? Egads! and 2) while it is middle grade, I expected a trickier plot and felt it telegraphed pretty early。 (But hello, what a genius strategy to introduce a newer generation to your work。 You think this is fun, kiddos? Get thee to your library!)

Ooof, this one hit hard。 Set a few years after the movie, Merida is once again in the centre of magic - this time she must use her wits to battle the gods for the continued fate of her home, DunBroch。A challenge is set。 Merida needs to bring about growth and change in her family, and show that it is possible without the catalyst of ruin。During the years that have passed since the movie, Merida's family have settled into their ways。 Into complacency。 When things are difficult, instead of fighting Ooof, this one hit hard。 Set a few years after the movie, Merida is once again in the centre of magic - this time she must use her wits to battle the gods for the continued fate of her home, DunBroch。A challenge is set。 Merida needs to bring about growth and change in her family, and show that it is possible without the catalyst of ruin。During the years that have passed since the movie, Merida's family have settled into their ways。 Into complacency。 When things are difficult, instead of fighting about them, they find ways to make it all for the best。 And in the end, nothing gets done, nothing gets dealt with。 I'm sure this isn't meant to feel like a personal attack, but jeez, ouch。The lesson of actually dealing with your problems is a good one, but sure as heck not comforting。 I'm not even sure what lessons I'm drawing from it, as in the end, Merida is the last to find change in herself。 I'd quite like to have seen that process of change through her eyes, the first-hand 'Here is how you fix the stagnation issues you have。 Here is how you stop procrastinating and avoiding things。' Instead I've had my flaws pointed to, and don't actually have a template for where to start with dealing with them。 Ah well。 It's a pretty book anyway。 。。。more

I REALLY TRULY LOVED AND ENJOYED THIS!!!The characters are just sooo like they were in the movie。 Taking a peak into Merida's thoughts was such an enlightening experience。 I mean in the movie we only get to know her through he thoughts and actions but this book really showed what made Merida tick。 It also gave amazing backstories to the characters we've encountered in the movie, but there are also other characters present here who weren't in the movie。 Everyone just complemented each other。 At f I REALLY TRULY LOVED AND ENJOYED THIS!!!The characters are just sooo like they were in the movie。 Taking a peak into Merida's thoughts was such an enlightening experience。 I mean in the movie we only get to know her through he thoughts and actions but this book really showed what made Merida tick。 It also gave amazing backstories to the characters we've encountered in the movie, but there are also other characters present here who weren't in the movie。 Everyone just complemented each other。 At first, it was a chaotic story and I didn't see the point of what was happening BUT I guess that's the point of this whole thing。 It really made me feel Merida's experiences, feelings, and journey, which made me like her even more。 I admit there were times that Merida's frustration made me frustrated with her。 It all worked out in the end (ish) anyway。 I liked that this wasn't heavy on romance which is on brand for Merida, and the little crumbs of that cake DEFINITELY TASTED SWEETER。I am hoping that there will be a sequel to this because I can't let go of this world just yet (PLEASE LET THERE BE ONE!!! Surprisingly this book is about Merida, from Disney's Brave, set after those events in Scotland。 Definitely a more mature look at the characters, I wouldn't hesitate to give it to the YA crowd, though a little slower and more intellectual than most。 I really love Maggie Stiefvater's style of writing, but I can't quite decide if I like the ending of this book -- mostly because it feels not completely finished。 Did she leave it like that because there's a sequel coming? Bravely was such a magical read, in the best of ways。 I love old gods, folklore, and legends incorporated in fantasy, and as we know, no one writes that sort of stuff like Maggie Stiefvater。 I've seen this book compared to All the Crooked Saints, but I'd say it has pretty much the same vibes as The Raven Cycle。 In which case I really enjoyed both the vibes and the plot, the premise of Merida having a year to improve her family to save it from ruin was such a fun and interesting concept。 I always Bravely was such a magical read, in the best of ways。 I love old gods, folklore, and legends incorporated in fantasy, and as we know, no one writes that sort of stuff like Maggie Stiefvater。 I've seen this book compared to All the Crooked Saints, but I'd say it has pretty much the same vibes as The Raven Cycle。 In which case I really enjoyed both the vibes and the plot, the premise of Merida having a year to improve her family to save it from ruin was such a fun and interesting concept。 I always say that the main reason why Stiefvater is my favorite author is how she writes characters, and yet I get blown away every time I pick up a new book because the characters are so well written , and Bravely was no exception。 The characters are so alive, and so realistic。 When you get to know them, you feel about them the way you feel about real people you know, somehow, and the relationships between them just add to that。 You feel like you're a part of the DunBroch family dynamic, almost。 Merida was a great main character, but Feradach was my favorite。 (view spoiler)[ The fact that both of them are so likable also added a lot to the story, that you're simultaneously rooting for both sides of the bargain, and it made for a perfect, bittersweet ending。 Bittersweet endings are my fuckin jam。 (hide spoiler)]I have a few tiny complaints (none that affected my rating, mind you) for example what people have been saying: this kind of reads like middle grade and the story probably would have benefitted from more complexity。 Considering it's made to be suitable for all ages, though, I don't feel like I can complain; it does a good job and I do feel like anyone could enjoy this, regardless of age。 Also, there is romance。 I did my best to read it as platonic love and not romantic love, because Merida is an aroace icon and I refuse to accept otherwise。 The relationship was unfortunately so well written I thought it was really cute BUT I WON'T ADMIT IT。 Bravely is an exciting but wholesome story with wonderful characters, and if you like Maggie Stiefvater's writing as much as I do, you will love this book。 Now excuse me while I go reread The Raven Cycle (again) so I can get more of these vibes。 。。。more

It's actually not the worst for a young adult book。 The romance is tacked on, but what can you expect from YA? Sadly, there's no such thing as YA without romance。 I think that's why everyone is upset that Merida is not 'ace'。 They mean they don't care about the made up, pointless kind of romance portrayed here, which is normal。 Ignoring that it was a pretty interesting plot。 (Maybe because the author had to make it 'clean' she was forced to make it more creative?)I think the OC called Leezie cou It's actually not the worst for a young adult book。 The romance is tacked on, but what can you expect from YA? Maybe that's why this story seemed more interesting to me, though it could certainly do with more interaction/dialogue。I mostly enjoyed reading about the land and creatures like wil o' the wisps etc。 which is the best part about Brave, and the technical writing is a step up for a Disney novel。 。。。more

What I've always loved about Stiefvater's writing is that magic is intrinsic to every story she weaves。 And it's never the simple wave-a-magic-wand-and-say-some -funny-words sort of thing。 It's magic the way it reads in old Arthurian legends and in Celtic myths。 And while that hasn't worked out as well for every novel I've read from Stiefvater (as you can tell from my ratings, there are some stories of hers where the magic and the story didn't gel at all), I had high hopes when I read that she w What I've always loved about Stiefvater's writing is that magic is intrinsic to every story she weaves。 And it's never the simple wave-a-magic-wand-and-say-some -funny-words sort of thing。 It's magic the way it reads in old Arthurian legends and in Celtic myths。 And while that hasn't worked out as well for every novel I've read from Stiefvater (as you can tell from my ratings, there are some stories of hers where the magic and the story didn't gel at all), I had high hopes when I read that she was writing a sequel to Disney's 2012 film "Brave。" And I am happy to say that those hopes were well-founded。 Merida's world of the medieval Scottish kingdom of DunBroch was a perfect fit for Stiefvater's brand of magical storytelling。Included were all the things I adore about both fandoms。 There's Stiefvater's whimsical sentences and thoughts about life。 There's the magic of nature just jumping off the page and through my imaginary eyes (something both Stiefvater's writing and the film world of Brave excelled at)。 From the original film, we have the feisty Merida (now a bit more grown up), pragmatic Elinor, loud but loving Fergus, and the triplets are now of an age where we can read of distinct personalities between the three of them。And the adventure! What fun! Caught in a game between gods, Merida is tasked with saving DunBroch from itself。 And with saving herself from her own disposition and unwillingness to change。 I was expecting a good children's story。 I wasn't expecting one that would cause my eyes to well up at the end of it all。 But I did。 Because the necessary pain that comes with growing up and changing who we are is written over every inch of this story。So, you might wonder, given that I obviously loved the story, why I only gave it 4 stars and not 5。 And the reason is simply that I felt there was so much more story to tell with Merida traveling to three other kingdoms。 Honestly, those bits are mostly glossed over here, and while I understand why (cos the focus was on Merida and her changing views of DunBroch and her family), I still feel like the adventure portion of this story could have been so much more than what we were given。 。。。more
