Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire。

Full disclosure: Over the years, I've read (and frequently reread) almost everything Don Winslow has written。 Always can count on a really good story and City on Fire is no exception。 This is an grossing organized crime thriller that had me from page one。 Lots of action, great characters (especially Danny), and a good pace to the book。 Can't wait to see what's next in store in this series。A won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 Full disclosure: Over the years, I've read (and frequently reread) almost everything Don Winslow has written。 Always can count on a really good story and City on Fire is no exception。 This is an grossing organized crime thriller that had me from page one。 Lots of action, great characters (especially Danny), and a good pace to the book。 Can't wait to see what's next in store in this series。A won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway for this honest review。 。。。more

Wow。 Incredible story teller。 Great start to the trilogy。

An exceptional book for the genre。 Like dominos falling the grievances between two crime families build into all-out war。 This is a world of secret alliances, low deals, double crosses, strange codes of honour and behaviour。 The pace is fast, kept grounded by well-chosen detail and clever characterisation。 Highly recommended。

Winslow delivers a brilliantly plotted and relentlessly propulsive crime thriller that is fortunately the first of a trilogy。。。very much looking forward to Entry 2 in the Danny Ryan saga。

The Irish and Italian mobs live peacefully side by side ruling the streets of Providence before a dispute takes place and starts an all out mob war。 Danny Ryan is thrust into a seat of power and he attempts to navigate personal obligations with obligations to the family。

The book is a retelling of the modern Helen of Troy based in the 1980’s。 Featuring the Irish and Italian mafia in Rhode Island。 It’s an action packed story full of violence and underworld gangs, the Author has done a great job of capturing every aspect of the characters…and there is a lot of characters。 At first it took me a little while to get my head around all the different characters, but once I worked out who was who I was sucked right into the book。 It’s a very dramatic, sad, and thrilling The book is a retelling of the modern Helen of Troy based in the 1980’s。 Featuring the Irish and Italian mafia in Rhode Island。 It’s an action packed story full of violence and underworld gangs, the Author has done a great job of capturing every aspect of the characters…and there is a lot of characters。 At first it took me a little while to get my head around all the different characters, but once I worked out who was who I was sucked right into the book。 It’s a very dramatic, sad, and thrilling read。 I can’t wait to read the next book in the series。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Aunque los protagonistas tengan la profundidad de una servilleta, y llegue un momento en el que las muertes se suceden a la misma velocidad a la que sus personajes las olvidan, el ritmo que le mete Winslow a sus libros es imparable, y su final, agónico y amargo。

A cracking mafia wars saga written in punchy, no-nonsense prose。 There are plenty of Mob clichés, but the tale of spiraling jealousies, rivalries, greed, honour and bloodlust, has some well-sketched characters to give the thrills some extra edge - especially once you start playing the game of matching the characters to their counterparts in the Trojan Wars saga (it’s not for nothing that Winslow prefaces the book with a quote from The Iliad)。

Don Winslow’s trilogy opener on the Soprano-ish Rhode Island mob scene wasn’t a page-turner, although it had interesting character development and (pretty much) kept my interest throughout。 Will I read the next two installments? Probably。 Though I hope City of Fire was more of a scene-setter and the next two in the series will have a deeper plot line。

A smart popcorn book about organized crime in 1980s Rhode Island。 The main character, Danny Ryan, kept this book grounded when the plot became a little too convenient or over the top。 Looking forward to the next book in the series!

Winslow’s memorable mob saga takes place in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1980s。 The writing is tight and propulsive with multiple twists。 Rival crime families—one Irish and one Italian—coexist without trouble for decades。 And then Liam Murphy drunkenly molests Paulie Moretti’s girlfriend, triggering a lasting feud that destabilizes the balance of power。Danny Ryan’s father once controlled the Irish mob, and Danny married the daughter of the head of the Murphy clan。 Once a mid-level player, “Go Winslow’s memorable mob saga takes place in Providence, Rhode Island in the 1980s。 The writing is tight and propulsive with multiple twists。 Rival crime families—one Irish and one Italian—coexist without trouble for decades。 And then Liam Murphy drunkenly molests Paulie Moretti’s girlfriend, triggering a lasting feud that destabilizes the balance of power。Danny Ryan’s father once controlled the Irish mob, and Danny married the daughter of the head of the Murphy clan。 Once a mid-level player, “Good old Danny” is slowly forced into a leadership role。 All he wants to do is to protect the family and people that he loves—whether he can or not depends on how adroitly he understands the motivations and threats of double-crosses involving the key players。Winslow employs rough ethnic humor and homophobic language representative of the mob-culture of the period, as well as a sizeable mob-war body count。 。。。more

While would not normally be my genre- not a great fan of too much murder and mayhem- the actual focus on the story is on the inner life of the main protagonist Danny。 He is a surprisingly likeable character and it is easy to root for him。

Here is a mean, gritty novel about dueling factions in Rhode Island。 The Irish thugs and Italian mobsters have been enjoying a fragile peace; that is, until a woman gets involved。 Tempers flare, bad decisions are made, and soon the whole city is burning。 Don Winslow never fails to deliver。

"City on Fire" is far from being a perfect novel, but it's definitely not bad。 At the beginning I was struggling with all the names which are often too similar to each other。 Regarding the fact that the novel is loosely based on Homer, I expected certain things in the story which came true。 But it is quite interesting how Winslow crafted this。 I did not have any problems with some characters treating women like shit - the story is set in the 80s and we have a lot of toxic masculinity here, which "City on Fire" is far from being a perfect novel, but it's definitely not bad。 At the beginning I was struggling with all the names which are often too similar to each other。 Regarding the fact that the novel is loosely based on Homer, I expected certain things in the story which came true。 But it is quite interesting how Winslow crafted this。 I did not have any problems with some characters treating women like shit - the story is set in the 80s and we have a lot of toxic masculinity here, which actually fits the characters。 It's the same with homosexuality。 The middle part is a bit too repetitive, but the last approximately 100 pages have a much better pacing then, although I think that the ending is too abrupt。 But generally "City on Fire" is a rather fast read and mostly I could enjoy it。 I am not that into gangster stories, but I love "Peaky Blinders"。 There are some similarities, especially regarding the "plans", but the BBC series just wins here。 But if you like "Peaky Blinders" or other gangster stories, you definitely should give "City on Fire" a try。 Not sure yet how many stars I will give, but I am tending to 3。5-4 at the moment。 Which is pretty good, as it is really hard to receive 5 stars from me。 。。。more

Definitely Worthy Of Your Consideration If You Don’t Mind A Cliffhanger Ending!City Of Fire is the first book in a planned trilogy by Don Winslow that, as stated in the Amazon book description, pertains to two crime families — one Irish, one Italian -- based in Rhode Island that have together work in relative harmony to control much of New England。 That is, until a beautiful woman comes between them resulting in the launching of a war that will see them kill each other, destroy a long-standing a Definitely Worthy Of Your Consideration If You Don’t Mind A Cliffhanger Ending!City Of Fire is the first book in a planned trilogy by Don Winslow that, as stated in the Amazon book description, pertains to two crime families — one Irish, one Italian -- based in Rhode Island that have together work in relative harmony to control much of New England。 That is, until a beautiful woman comes between them resulting in the launching of a war that will see them kill each other, destroy a long-standing alliance and set a city on fire。 While I generally avoid books that I know going in have a cliffhanger ending, the description of City Of Fire sufficiently intrigued me to go against my bias and give it a read。 I’m very glad that I did as a found it provided me with an intense reading experience; and, as such would I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys books in the tradition of The Godfather and Goodfellas, and especially to readers who are already fans of Don Winslow’s books。I enjoyed City Of Fire for several reasons, but my two most important reasons are as follows。 One is because Winslow masterfully captures the sounds, sights, smells, violence and corruption of the crime world within these Rhode Island crime families in such a way that it made me feel that I was 'right there' along side them as the plot unfolds。 The second, and at least equally important, reason is that Winslow fills City Of Fire with very well-developed, complex, real-world characters that will likely stay with you long after you finish reading the book。 Despite my overall enjoyment of City Of Fire, I’ve deducted one star from my rating because the ending of the book is not really the ending of the story between these two families。 The real ending won’t be known until the trilogy is completed, which won’t be until sometime in 2024。If books with a cliffhanger ending are not a big concern to you, do yourself a favor and strongly consider adding City Of Fire to your reading list! 。。。more

It might be off to the right start。 Winslow, after finishing up the Cartel-story-arc in Power of the Dog, now takes on the Italian and the Irish Mafia in New England。 Nobody quite does it like him: the whole book is not dripping with emotion, it's dry, hard, humorless and cynical, but still you suffer with them, you laugh, you chuckle and sometimes you just want to whack their heads - hard。 It's a mystery to me how Winslow actually manages to let you hate every (!) single character (ok, but Ian), want both sides to win, both sides to loose spectacularly and still find the one character you'd actually pistolwhip yourself, if you had the chance。 This is not a story full of love。 It's also not a story you've never heard before。 But it's well narrated。 It's tragic, it's gruesome and it's as hard as the people playing their parts。 And still you hope, you hope for that sliver of goodness in some of them。 I'll stop here。 But I truly enjoyed this。 It might be the worthy successor to the Power trilogy and I'm excited to suffer through the rest of it。 。。。more

Don Winslow is one of those authors I swear gets better with each book he writes, and City on Fire is no exception。 Full of tough dialogue, lean prose, unforgettable characters, and cinematic scenes, this is a book that will stay with me for some time。 Don has recently announced his retirement as a fiction writer, and I really hope he changes his mind at some point。 Until then, I take comfort in knowing that this is the first book in a kickass trilogy。

This is a realistically told mafia crime story, so, inherently violent。 Not particularly my interest, but this book was compulsively readable and since it’s the first of a trilogy, I’m interested enough to see where it goes。
