As far as management books go, this is not bad。 One fault of Dalio’s work is that Principles tries to cover everything about managing a Fortune 500 company。 Unfortunately instead of writing this in relatable terms, it’s written as a list of things to do。 Dalio somewhat poo-poos the concept of “leadership” and the idea that there is an art to running a company as well as the scientific and managerial side。 In this way the book comes across as formulaic - do these things and you will have success。 As far as management books go, this is not bad。 One fault of Dalio’s work is that Principles tries to cover everything about managing a Fortune 500 company。 Unfortunately instead of writing this in relatable terms, it’s written as a list of things to do。 Dalio somewhat poo-poos the concept of “leadership” and the idea that there is an art to running a company as well as the scientific and managerial side。 In this way the book comes across as formulaic - do these things and you will have success。 This concept is extended to say that every organization is a machine, and if you properly align the machine and your goals, and properly pull the levers of the formulaic principles, success is almost inevitable。 Granted, failure is discussed as a sometimes necessary detour on the route to success, but this problem, too, has a formula。 The book isn’t all bad - embedded in the lists and formulae are sound, timeless principles for management and leadership which anyone who has read a book in those fields has likely seen before。 These are good reminders and reinforcement。 However, despite Dalio’s business success, I was honestly surprised by the high praise he gave China and it’s despotic leaders throughout the book。 Unfortunately, this praise was not focused on or even related to China’s growth over the last several decades and apparent play at capitalism。 Instead, Dalio praised their authoritarian system, tight controls and “management”, and even communist party leaders as “the greatest in the world”。 Given many laudatory recommendations I had high expectations for this book。 Unfortunately those expectations were left unmet。 。。。more

Because to be meritocratic is to be a binary。 You cant involve emotions if you want to be meritocratic。 Which is the most logical especially if you want to build an empire yourself, but people just seem to love their ego more than their dream。This is certainly a reread candidate and stays above the top of my read list。 Because it proved itself to be a timeless wisdom that an author like Ray Dalio had logically put into words。 。。。more

long book filled with inspiring principles。 Will have to read this again at a later stage。 I think this is a great book for anyone who wants to create a more structured and predictable life。 With the lessons from this book you need to think less and just stick to your principles instead of letting emotions control you。

Practical but dense。 Works better as a sort of reference than for straight reading。 I would read a chapter and chew on it for a few days, then read another etc。 Luckily it has a bullet-point list of all the Principles helpfully marked in the middle。
