Summary

The critically acclaimed author of Polaris Rising takes readers on an exciting journey with the start of her brand-new series about a female bounty hunter and the man who is her sworn enemy。

Octavia Zarola would do anything to keep her tiny, close-knit bounty hunting crew together—even if it means accepting a job from Torran Fletcher, a ruthless former general and her sworn enemy。 When Torran offers her enough credits to not only keep her crew afloat but also hire someone to fix her ship, Tavi knows that she can’t refuse—no matter how much she’d like to。

With so much money on the line, Torran and his crew insist on joining the hunt。 Tavi reluctantly agrees because while the handsome, stoic leader pushes all of her buttons—for both anger and desire—she’s endured worse, and the massive bonus payment he’s promised for a completed job is reason enough to shut up and deal。

But when they uncover a deeper plot that threatens the delicate peace between humans and Valoffs, Tavi suspects that Torran has been using her as the impetus for a new war。 With the fate of her crew balanced on a knife’s edge, Tavi must decide where her loyalties lie—with the quiet Valoff who’s been lying to her, or with the human leaders who left her squad to die on the battlefield。 And this time, she’s put her heart on the line。

Just utterly delightful。 There is space and a conspiracy and enemies to lovers。 I am for all of it。

I'm having a hard time rating Hunt The Stars。 I will write down my thoughts here and hopefully that will make it clear where I stand。The beginning was very promising, it gave me Guardians of The Galaxy vibes - the other-planets/space travel build-up was extremely interesting and kept my attention。Disappointingly, the romance is not very heavy。 Up until the 55% mark, barely anything (romance-wise) has happened between the main characters。 No angst, longing or anything really, just a couple of tim I'm having a hard time rating Hunt The Stars。 I will write down my thoughts here and hopefully that will make it clear where I stand。The beginning was very promising, it gave me Guardians of The Galaxy vibes - the other-planets/space travel build-up was extremely interesting and kept my attention。Disappointingly, the romance is not very heavy。 Up until the 55% mark, barely anything (romance-wise) has happened between the main characters。 No angst, longing or anything really, just a couple of times Tavi mentioning that she was attracted to Torran。 Narrative point of view hardly ever matters to me, but Torran's pov felt sorely lacking in this one。He felt like a closed off, remote character I couldn't get a read on, and I think that I would have understood him better if I had gotten his views。And the enemies-to-lovers? Didn't really feel like it。 It's probably just me, but when I hear enemies-to-lovers, I want the characters to be really enemies。 Tavi and Torran were enemies in the sense that they were adversaries, and knew that they were on opposite teams。 But there should have been a minimum level of angst that I did not feel here at all。 Even the storyline progression felt stagnant for a big chunk of the book - at 68%, no real progress was made with respect to solving the case, besides one big reveal。 It felt like there was no substantial development。As I read on, the urge to DNF got stronger and stronger, but I kept with it, although I confess that I skimmed the last 25%。 Usually when I like a book, I'll finish it in one or 2 days max。 This one dragged on for 4 days and would have dragged on for longer if I didn't want to get done with it。 This is very indicative of how it didn't really work for me。I think this one is better than my usual 3。5* ratings, but not up to the level of 4*。 I'll go halfway and give this one 3。75*。 。。。more

3。5 stars rounded up to 4I thought it was going to be a sci-fi book and it is set in space with spaceships and other planets, but there’s also detective work finding a missing item and a whole lot of romance。I’m not much of a romance reader, but this was lighthearted and fun。 Nothing deep, just a fun read。If I was in the mood for a light fun read I would continue the series。 Sometimes entertainment is enough。

So much of this book felt like filler to me。 A lot is told about food。 When Luna is hungry, which is always。 That they’re vegetarian。 That they’ll be cooking more canned produce than fresh。 We’re told repeatedly about the humans’ favorite foods (vegetarian lasagna/cookies/tomato chickpeas)。 Sooo much is repeated in this book which makes it feel less substantial than it is。 It was 12 hours long! I was entertained。 I thought the plot was interesting enough and the characters were good and what I expect from Mihalik。 I’m looking forward to the sequel coming later this year。

4。 5 starsI received an e-ARC copy of Hunt the Stars from the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。 This book was really good。 It feels more like the Rogue Queen series than the Consortium Rebellion series, both of which are good。 Ship captain Octavia Zarola fought in the war against the alien Valoffs with her squad, Eli, Kee and Lexi。 With an unsteady peace agreement between the Federated Human Planets(FHP) and the Valovian empire, Tavi and her crew are bounty hunters。 When 4。 5 starsI received an e-ARC copy of Hunt the Stars from the publisher and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review。 This book was really good。 It feels more like the Rogue Queen series than the Consortium Rebellion series, both of which are good。 Ship captain Octavia Zarola fought in the war against the alien Valoffs with her squad, Eli, Kee and Lexi。 With an unsteady peace agreement between the Federated Human Planets(FHP) and the Valovian empire, Tavi and her crew are bounty hunters。 When she is offered a lucrative job to retrieve a stolen item by a Valoff General Torran Fletcher, Tavi is reluctant to take it, but with a crew to feed and ship to repair she agrees。 But nothing about this job is what it seems and the chemistry between her and Torran is not helping。 Stuck in unfriendly territory, Tavi is going to have to think fast to get her crew and possibly her heart, out alive。 I really enjoyed this book。 Tavi is a character that takes responsibility and wants to get everyone home。 She is also super tough and takes no crap。 I enjoyed watching her and Torran try the navigate a working relationship and the coils of possible romance and deal with what happened during the war。 The side characters were also interesting so I'm hoping for more。 I look forward to the next book in this series。 。。。more

I stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish this。 Full disclosure: I found the first couple chapters a little disappointing — I was expecting lots of tension and suspense。 (Bounty hunters in space, you know? Felt like a fair expectation。) But it was a slow set-up; lots of "Look at me and my cool army friends, we're super tight, and I'm super into self-care garden and my super cool pet fox thing, and here, let me walk you through my vegetarian lasagna cooking prep。" Being very literal here, so i I stayed up until 4 in the morning to finish this。 Full disclosure: I found the first couple chapters a little disappointing — I was expecting lots of tension and suspense。 (Bounty hunters in space, you know? A fun, twisty, spicy read。 A little gimmicky, sometimes cliché, but it's a light, approachable sci-fi for readers who are here more for the fi part than the sci part。 。。。more

I loved this book! I hadn’t read a space opera in a while, and this one pushed all my buttons。 Since this is the first of this author’s that I have read, I will definitely have to check out more of her work。 Nice that she’s a fellow Texan, too。

Most of the real action happens in the last quarter or so of the book; the rest is a ton of exposition and awesome slow-burn tension building between Tavi and Torran-- not objecting! Much smoldering! And consent! Fun and fluffy space opera。

I almost gave this book 3 stars, but I really hate Tavi, so this book is getting 2 stars just because of how annoying I find her to be。Because she is one of the worst characters I've ever read。 I don't know what it is about romance books making their leading ladies so goddamn annoying but Tavi was about on par with Daphne Bridgerton in how much I just could not stand her。 I think what really sold this is her acting super affronted when she finds out the situation isn't what Torran led her to bel I almost gave this book 3 stars, but I really hate Tavi, so this book is getting 2 stars just because of how annoying I find her to be。Because she is one of the worst characters I've ever read。 I don't know what it is about romance books making their leading ladies so goddamn annoying but Tavi was about on par with Daphne Bridgerton in how much I just could not stand her。 I think what really sold this is her acting super affronted when she finds out the situation isn't what Torran led her to believe despite him being clear from the onset that he is basically under cultural NDA and can't tell her the whole truth。 She's like that a lot with Valovian culture actually, like when she insists she wants to give the gift back because she doesn't need it despite knowing that's Majorly Offensive in Valovian culture。It's just not endearing at all and makes her look like an asshole who isn't even attempting to meet this man in the middle。Torran was so much less annoying and I actually quite liked him, so it's a shame I couldn't even enjoy the romance because it came right the fuck out of nowhere。 This was sold as enemies-to-lovers but it speed ran that to a ridiculous degree。 Like they were making eyes at each other by page 200, when this is a series and the author absolutely could've dragged it out across multiple books。Also the entire plot with the kidnapping?? it just kept on getting more and more convoluted and suddenly the empress is trying to instigate a war because Oh Human Progress Bad, which is soooo cliche and overdone。 This book doesn't do anything unique with its setting either。 It has MCU human aliens that are just humans with unique eye colors and maybe special powers but that's it。 The settings are extremely flat and unrealized。when the next book in this series comes out I'm probably not going to read it。 Cause tbh I don't care。 None of the characters really grabbed my attention, there wasn't anything unique to the setting, and the conflict doesn't interest me。 So I'll pass。 。。。more

2022 Free Range Reading3。75 stars。 A book chosen for fun, not part of any project, plan, or list。 And oh so worth it!I have evolved over the last number of years, from someone who sneered at romance novels, to tolerating romance elements in a story, to enjoying a mystery or fantasy novel with a strong romance element, to a woman who actually has a favourite romance trope。 Yup, I am a fan of the enemies-to-lovers scenario, so this novel was ideal for my taste。 Octavia Zarola is human, Torran 2022 Free Range Reading3。75 stars。 A book chosen for fun, not part of any project, plan, or list。 And oh so worth it!I have evolved over the last number of years, from someone who sneered at romance novels, to tolerating romance elements in a story, to enjoying a mystery or fantasy novel with a strong romance element, to a woman who actually has a favourite romance trope。 Yup, I am a fan of the enemies-to-lovers scenario, so this novel was ideal for my taste。 Octavia Zarola is human, Torran Fletcher is Valovian and they were both well known on their respective sides of an interstellar war, currently at peace。 The book was recommended by one of my favourite authors (Ilona Andrews), who use this set up a lot and I adore their books。 And there are a lot of similarities to the Andrews' writing。 Torran Fletcher is an extremely powerful telekinetic, much like a certain Mad Rogan from the Hidden Legacy series。 He has similar intimate talents too, and the couple find themselves very tempted to hit the sheets before they have established a fully trusting working relationship。 Like Nevada Baylor and Mad Rogan, Tavi and Torran are trying to work together platonically, with varying degrees of success。 If you're familiar with the Andrews' Kate Daniels series, you will also identify a certain hot tub scene as another overlap。What is different here is that Mihalik doesn't keep the tension going for more than one book。 For me, things moved along much more quickly than I would have chosen。 I very much believe in delayed gratification in order to maintain plot tension。 But I note that the next book concentrates on another woman, Kee, the information specialist on Tavi's crew。 Naturally, it is a Valovian man on Fletcher's team who will be her opposite number。 Their friendship gets a rocky start here in book one, but I don't think there's any doubt where they are heading。 I think that's one of the most frustrating thing about romance novels for me: there's no question of what the end point will be, even though they will concurrently be trying to avert another war。So don't go into this book expecting the romance to take a back seat to the political plot—it doesn't。 The relationships overwhelm all other concerns like a tsunami。 If you can live with that, you will enjoy this novel as much as I did。 For the record, I want to read book two。 。。。more
