Valerie Perrin non si smentisce。 Anche in questo romanzo ritrovo la scrittura piacevole， introspettiva， coinvolgente， la tensione sempre alta， i temi drammatici ma allo stesso tempo parte integrante della vita comune， non credo potrò mai dimenticarlo， non sono in grado di giudicarlo con lucidità perché mi ha trovato in un momento particolare della mia vita， si è intrecciato alle vicissitudini personali in un modo tale che mi sono trovata spesso immersa e confusa con la realtà， sembrava parlarmi， Valerie Perrin non si smentisce。 Anche in questo romanzo ritrovo la scrittura piacevole， introspettiva， coinvolgente， la tensione sempre alta， i temi drammatici ma allo stesso tempo parte integrante della vita comune， non credo potrò mai dimenticarlo， non sono in grado di giudicarlo con lucidità perché mi ha trovato in un momento particolare della mia vita， si è intrecciato alle vicissitudini personali in un modo tale che mi sono trovata spesso immersa e confusa con la realtà， sembrava parlarmi， mi ha fatto paura。。。 Ma non posso che consigliarlo。 Emozionante。 ❤️ 。。。more

La delicatezza con cui Valérie Perrin riesce a scrivere non smetterà mai di colpirmi。 E in questo terzo romanzo l’ho trovata incantevole， dalla prima all’ultima pagina。 Una storia che si snoda tra passato e presente， che non mette un punto sul futuro， che affronta un’infinità di temi tutti tra loro importanti， e un’infinità di emozioni che guidano il lettore mentre segue， senza riuscire a scollarsi dalle pagine， le vite di questi tre amici， di cui difficilmente ci dimenticheremo。

I was torn on the rating I wanted to give this novel， Three by Valerie Perrin， but the characters and the story （stories） have stayed present to me for these few days which bumped it up。 The main group of three friends and then the fourth who is periphery at best to the group encompass the best and the worst of friendships and cliques both growing up and as adults。 These are flawed， and at times frustrating， characters。 Which is to say a lot like people we all know （and ourselves if we're honest I was torn on the rating I wanted to give this novel， Three by Valerie Perrin， but the characters and the story （stories） have stayed present to me for these few days which bumped it up。 The main group of three friends and then the fourth who is periphery at best to the group encompass the best and the worst of friendships and cliques both growing up and as adults。 These are flawed， and at times frustrating， characters。 Which is to say a lot like people we all know （and ourselves if we're honest）。 If you like getting to know characters， especially a group along with their interactions， you will love this book for that alone。The mystery at the heart of the novel serves as much as a frame so we can jump between their school years and their present。 What made these shifts in time particularly compelling was the way most of the jumps informed the sections around them。 Knowing in going back the things they didn't yet know， and in coming back to the present knowing what they had thought and expected their futures to hold。 If you're a reader who both inhabits the novel and relates it to your own life， this might be similar to when you pull out an old yearbook and get lost in the memories only to remember what actually has transpired since then。I probably became almost immediately invested in them early because I met one of my very best friends in school simply because we were in the same class and ended up seated by each other。 Until I moved， we were inseparable， so the idea of serendipity determining one's best friend hit me close to home。 I even called him to see how he and his family are doing （they're doing great， by the way！）。I would recommend this to readers who enjoy taking time to get to know characters and who understand that just as in life， characters are neither all good nor all bad， yet we love them anyway。Reviewed from a copy made available by the publisher via NetGalley。 。。。more

Ho letto pareri discordanti su questo libro。 Per me è stato geniale con qualche aspetto che poteva essere migliorato， ma sempre geniale resta。 All'inizio può sembrare la solita storiella di tre amici che crescono insieme ed infatti io per prima ho pensato più volte "Rispetto a Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori， non c'è paragone" e invece mi sono dovuta ricredere。 Le storie tra passato e presente si mescolano con un'armonia perfetta， con la maestria tipica della Perrin， si toccando molti temi importanti Ho letto pareri discordanti su questo libro。 Per me è stato geniale con qualche aspetto che poteva essere migliorato， ma sempre geniale resta。 All'inizio può sembrare la solita storiella di tre amici che crescono insieme ed infatti io per prima ho pensato più volte "Rispetto a Cambiare l'acqua ai fiori， non c'è paragone" e invece mi sono dovuta ricredere。 Le storie tra passato e presente si mescolano con un'armonia perfetta， con la maestria tipica della Perrin， si toccando molti temi importanti e gli spunti di riflessione sono moltissimi。 L'ho trovato coinvolgente， emozionante， originale， strepitoso e con un pizzico di mistero。 Non manca qualche aspetto negativo che "perdono" perché tutto il resto è così perfetto che recupera le piccole lacune。 Ad esempio l'inizio un po' lento， la questione inizia a diventare "calda" dopo almeno 200 pagine， la Perrin prepara bene il terreno ma in alcuni punti appare un po' ripetitiva a mio avviso。 Al contrario la fine un po' rapida， avrei preferito che fosse stata approfondita meglio。 Ora il mio unico problema è che mi mancano Nina， Etienne e Adrien come fossero diventati miei amici。 "Ci sono libri e anche incontri che sono come occasioni perse。 Passiamo accanto a storie e persone che avrebbero potuto cambiarci la vita senza vederle a causa di un malinteso， di una copertina， di un riassunto sbagliato， di un atteggiamenti prevenuto。 Per fortuna certe volte la vita insiste。" 。。。more

I haven’t read a Europa title I didn’t live in…a long time。 This novel was great， about three childhood friends growing up in France。 We follow them from ages 10 to 42 and there isn’t much left out （read: the novel is 30 years long）。 Loved it。

Immersing yourself in a 550-page saga of three friends that spans 30+ years and delves into secrets， betrayals， adversities， intimacies， loss， obsession and more is an all-encompassing and particularly rewarding experience。 After a while， you become so invested that the outer world melts away as the characters completely demand your attention – and empathy。Such was my reading experience of three best friends， starting in 1986 – young schoolmates Adrien and Etienne and the girl Nina – which is in Immersing yourself in a 550-page saga of three friends that spans 30+ years and delves into secrets， betrayals， adversities， intimacies， loss， obsession and more is an all-encompassing and particularly rewarding experience。 After a while， you become so invested that the outer world melts away as the characters completely demand your attention – and empathy。Such was my reading experience of three best friends， starting in 1986 – young schoolmates Adrien and Etienne and the girl Nina – which is interspersed by chapters set in 2017， when they have grown up and grown apart。With the passage of time comes a metamorphosis that tests the limits of friendship as all three are molded by their fate and their secrets。 One of the characters will harbor a secret that is existential in nature and will change the very essence of self-identity and outward perception。 Another character is on a quest to determine the responsibility for events that occurred in youth。 And the third suffers a tragedy that forces a choice and a chain of events that leads to a feeling of suffocation。I’ve teased out the scenarios because the discovery of what the three must individually face is a big part of the joy of reading a novel like this。 Suffice to say that Valerie Perrin is a master at racketing up interest and suspense。 We root for these characters， despite the fact that each of them is badly flawed and sometimes makes the wrong choices。 There is so much humanity in each of them that we identify with their outsider positions and want them to break free。 The dialogue set up between the past （1986 onward） to the present （2017） is particularly compelling， giving us information that the younger-self characters do not possess。At the end of the day， this novel is a book about friendship: how it changes， evolves， mutates， and ultimately， endures despite the world and all its challenges。 The ending is a bit too frenetic and wrapped up for my liking， but that doesn’t change the fact that Three is an totally consuming book that makes it hard to come up for air while reading it。 A huge thanks to Europa Edition for the privilege of being an advance reader in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

even if the central mystery， the one concerning the car found at the bottom of the lake， is dragged out to the point of losing some of its elasticity。The repetition of the details surrounding it is dulled by the plot’s swelling complexity。 And yet， its obscure form remains a palpable presence in the background。 Again and again， the narrative taunts with its inwardness。 The characters， though badly flawed， are nevertheless captivating。 The events， though shocking， never once pare their tender edge。 The disturbing nature of ingesting an outsider’s tale — at least on the face of it — heightens the misery that emanates from the passage of time。 Nostalgia， melancholy， remorse， and yearning fuse with the more acute sensations of lust， obsession， and interdependence。 These， present only in the here and now， nevertheless long for the endurance of memory with the same anguish。The shocks that materialize along the way feel like thrusts， but they are never sensationalistic。 In fact， they seem all the more volatile because of the novel’s ambiance; as thick as honey， and just as smothering。 The resulting back-and-forth resembles a half-choked dialogue between the past and the present， invigorated by a shifting point of view。 Thus， the novel’s mysteries lie not in the characters’ thoughts， but their actions。Here， too， Perrin shows off her control over suspense。 She peels back layers of intrigue with a self-restraint that contrasts wildly against the inflamed senses of her protagonists， allowing us to challenge the disarray of the world they inhabit。 Every blade that sinks into the gut of another is drawn first from the psyche。 This mutability of emotion， which often stems from the pretext of love， will forever remain a terrifying notion。The twist that comes at the end is knotted so tightly with the story’s other threads that its reveal severs our grasp of the narrative。 The sentiment that breaks through this wreckage is fragile and delicate， and the plot’s fierce protection of it feels entirely justified。 Though purer than expected， this revelation still manages to overthrow THREE’s emotional structure。 In many ways， it acts like a tremor racing down an exposed nerve。The idea of being buried beneath foreign skin — the very concept of identity， in fact — is now being explored with more clarity and tenacity than ever before。 And Perrin certainly raises the bar when it comes to its artistic delivery。 Her exploration delves under the membrane of the individual， then probes the identities shaped around， and within， the framework of friendship and romance。To put it simply， Perrin treats the subject matter as a living， writhing thing。 The only small charge that can be made against THREE is the very nature of the three-way friendship。 Its conception is almost immaculate。 The attraction that pulls Nina， Adrien， and Etienne together is nearly divine。 Though lines blur over time， it is not desire that binds them。 And yet， the tenacity of their friendship sometimes feels too abstract to seize fully。 We understand their addiction to each other on a rational level。 We can stitch their affection for one another to the narrative like a skin graft。 Even so， the cell remains a foreign component。 This is felt particularly keenly when we’re told — and shown — that there is very little linking two of them together; that without the cohesive presence of the third， there would likely be no triangle of tribulation。 Inevitably， the dilemmas their friendship has to endure lose the jagged edge of hysteria， which their words clearly denote。The subliminal level， which is so deftly manipulated by the story’s other facets， is therefore barely reached。 Then again， it may be that any shift in the friendship’s design would result in lasting impracticality。Overall， THREE is all-consuming， tantalizing， intricate， and masterly。 There is no other work like it， and this in itself renders any contemplation of its quiet ferocity a feat of perseverance。 The novel’s impact proves all the more enduring because of its length， which cannot be ripped through easily in one sitting。 We can even go as far as to say that THREE knowingly prolongs the semisweet torture of its intimacy。This review first appeared on Delphic Reviews。 。。。more

Three by Valerie PerrinI settled into this novel right away， tucking my feet under me in my chair and contentedly turning page after page。 It was about 3:45 and suddenly it’s 5:00， people in the neighborhood are getting home from work and car doors slam， pulling me out of the story。 And then， I read the rest the next afternoon after work， the same chair and the mazy surfacing from the page at the end。 I stare at this screen for about ten minutes before beginning to type。The mystery unfolds slowl Three by Valerie PerrinI settled into this novel right away， tucking my feet under me in my chair and contentedly turning page after page。 It was about 3:45 and suddenly it’s 5:00， people in the neighborhood are getting home from work and car doors slam， pulling me out of the story。 And then， I read the rest the next afternoon after work， the same chair and the mazy surfacing from the page at the end。 I stare at this screen for about ten minutes before beginning to type。The mystery unfolds slowly， it saunters and strolls; this is not a flaw。 In a year where I’ve read well over a dozen of the overcaffeinated twisty thrillers， mysteries by writers with the zoomies， this is a reminder of how good a mystery can be when the author stops trying to please the industry and gives us something like this。The colors of this novel as it opens are crisp and bright， luminous。 There is the blue of sky and water， the warm gold of suntans， the red slick of nail polish， the cloudy gleam of a gold sandal。 As we flip forward and backward between the end of the 80’s and 2017， this continues。 There are pinpricks of history and pop culture – the music， the films – that a reader old enough to remember will summon easily。 It’s very nicely done， never overwhelming or nostalgic， never too obscure。I cared from the first pages about the three people at the center of this story: Etienne， Adrien， Nina。 I want to know who this absence-with-a-name Clothilde is， and I want to know what’s going to happen， but I’m fine with it being a long journey by train through a changing landscape rather than a quick flight。 Perrin has a knack for giving us just enough to build our imagining of what the characters look like as children and then does a magic: we see them grown up when the story hops forward。The mystery lets the reader move through a liminal space， where hints accumulate like bits of paper drawn to static electricity。 There is a magnificent architecture to the story， and though I don’t have access to the French edition， I wager the translation into English preserves only some of what was in the original – this is a novel that makes me wish I had learned enough French to read without painstaking， halting recourse to a grammar and a dictionary。There is the strange feeling of standing between two mirrors in the way the book shifts， the past passages creeping closer in time。 Perrin somehow makes 1994 feel yesterdayish and 2017 feel like an eternity ago。Apart from the mystery we know is there， there is a second secret at the core of this book， and I had an inkling of it but won’t spoil the story。 If you’re curious to know what set me on the trail of it before it was revealed in the novel itself， you can ask。 That being said， I didn’t solve the mystery of Clothilde beforehand。I’m so dumbstruck by this novel that I feel silly reviewing it: it’s the kind of book I wish I could write， it’s linear in spite of the to and fro in time， it takes its time without dragging， and it’s jammed with details， textures， resonances。 When the story comes together， it is effortless， exquisite， and sapid。 I highly recommend this novel and will read whatever I can find by Valerie Perrin。I received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book right from the start it was a compelling read with a good writing style， gripping storyline， engaing narrative and well developed characters that jumped off of the page。 The plot was twisty and unpredictable and had me on the edge of my seat。 i really liked it。
