Summary

To understand this book fully, the magnificent scope of it, reading it once is not enough。 I highly recommend the Gregory Hays translation, though it has been modified a little bit for this century。

Guess I finally have an answer to “If you had a chance to meet one person from history, who would that be?”

It's difficult to rate this because I have mixed feelings about it。 I felt it necessary to keep in mind while reading that this book was not intended to be read by anyone so maybe I should excuse the fact that this all boils down to two major points: the transience of life and on how to be a good person。 This book really paints a picture of a man steadfast and unselfish in fulfilling his duties but at the same time yearning for the freedom to be someone else; to dedicate his life to philosophy。 It's difficult to rate this because I have mixed feelings about it。 I felt it necessary to keep in mind while reading that this book was not intended to be read by anyone so maybe I should excuse the fact that this all boils down to two major points: the transience of life and on how to be a good person。 This book really paints a picture of a man steadfast and unselfish in fulfilling his duties but at the same time yearning for the freedom to be someone else; to dedicate his life to philosophy。 In conclusion, I find Marcus Aurelius to be quite admirable, even if he's a bit too hard on himself。 。。。more

I am shocked that a man with such power can remain humble and kind。 A emperor but yet was not dill used with the idea of power。 His way of thinking is immense, filled with clear, logical thought。 This is a great read if you are getting into philosophy。

A must read for all…at the right time when they are receptive。 Stoicism has a lot of answers to the big life questions。 This is a brief but heavy read。 Try Ryan Holiday if you want a lighter easier read。

Some really fascinating insights from a practicing stoic and emperor。 Loosely connected, but oftentimes haphazard, as would be expected from the journal that it is。 Many of the ideas have stuck with me post-reading and caused me to put events and conflicts from my own life into a healthier perspective。

Hannah Feathers

This is a “take what you need, leave what you don’t” kind of philosophy book。 I wouldn’t really recommend it to others but I am glad I read it。

Hannah Livingston

It is hard to rate thoughts that were never meant to be read, and certainly never meant to be a book。 That being said, it was incredibly thought provoking, yet simple in its extreme rationality, and got me to think (meditate!) about many thoughts, actions, feelings, that pop up all around me and how I deal with them! I think it was definitely an important read as part of the stoicism canon。

Great read if you want to hear about the philosophical views of a 2000-year-old Roman Emperor。 Some good advice and some advice that has been proven wrong as history has trodded on。

Some good aphorisms and general "worldly wisdom," but as a system it is not very pleasant。 "Suck it up" can only last for so long before it wears on the soul。 Sometimes just pushing it down results in very unpleasant repercussions。 And sometimes you actually are hurt。As a side note, I can't imagine someone writes this kind of journal when they are having an enjoyable, fulfilling life。 Marcus seemed pressed on all sides constantly and this journal seems to be him trying to decompress。 Just specul Some good aphorisms and general "worldly wisdom," but as a system it is not very pleasant。 "Suck it up" can only last for so long before it wears on the soul。 Sometimes just pushing it down results in very unpleasant repercussions。 And sometimes you actually are hurt。As a side note, I can't imagine someone writes this kind of journal when they are having an enjoyable, fulfilling life。 Marcus seemed pressed on all sides constantly and this journal seems to be him trying to decompress。 Just speculation。 I would definitely prefer Marcus to Foucault for functional life advice。 。。。more

I love the virtues that Marcus touches on。 The fact that this man wrote this piece over 2000 years ago is incredible。So many life principles that should be taught at school。

Stoicism is in my opinion some of the greatest wisdom out there! And Marcus Aurelius mediations is the bible to the stoic world! What I love about mediations is that it’s a book that you can always go back to and re read and reflect on the wisdom within it! It’s inspired many new generations of stoics alike and is very much practiced in current cultures today! For those seeking insightful wisdom Marcus Aurelius Meditations is definitely a book worth reading and one I highly recommend! 📖
