Summary

The next chapter of the ongoing saga of The Resistance takes an intimate look at a very special species of the superhuman race known as The Reborns。 Emily Kai is what is known as a “Moth。” She was granted immense power by the global pandemic known as “The Great Death,” but with a caveat: The moment she taps into the power that resides within her, a clock starts and Emily will have only six months to live。 Granted the opportunity to bring immense beauty into the world, but only by paying the ultimate price, Emily embarks on a harrowing journey of self-discovery that will test her to her core and take her to places way beyond her wildest imagination。

Man, this book was sad, tragic and beautiful all at the same damn time。 This is set in the world of the book, The Resistance, also by JMS。 In that world, the big death happened。 A pandemic that was killing people left and right。 Millions died。 Some of the ones who survived developed powers。 Some of those powered people were know as Moths。 The had a latent power that they didn’t know what it was。 If they ever activated it, or “blossomed”, they die in 6 months。 If you had this ability would you ac Man, this book was sad, tragic and beautiful all at the same damn time。 This is set in the world of the book, The Resistance, also by JMS。 In that world, the big death happened。 A pandemic that was killing people left and right。 Millions died。 Some of the ones who survived developed powers。 Some of those powered people were know as Moths。 The had a latent power that they didn’t know what it was。 If they ever activated it, or “blossomed”, they die in 6 months。 If you had this ability would you activate it? It could be something crazy like you could end all the diseases that plagued man。 But again, you die in 6 months。 Our main character, Emily is a Moth。 Her dad died from the big death and her mom blamed her and said down foul things to her。 So know she wants to “blossom” and activate her power hoping to do some good in the world。 Just watching all that she was able to accomplish in her 6 months was an emotional trip。 Type of stuff to put a pit in your stomach。 Tragically beautiful。 If you have read or plan on reading The Resistance, definitely check this out as well。 。。。more

I'm a long time fan of J。 Michael Stracynski and, while this isn't Babylon Five level, it's up there with the best of his work in graphic novel format, a testimony to the superpower--the metaphor takes on a different meaning here--of empathy。 Best read alongside the compilations of The Resistance。 I'm a long time fan of J。 Michael Stracynski and, while this isn't Babylon Five level, it's up there with the best of his work in graphic novel format, a testimony to the superpower--the metaphor takes on a different meaning here--of empathy。 Best read alongside the compilations of The Resistance。 。。。more

Beautiful - visually and thematically。 A lovely and inspiring character sketch。 The kind of story we all need right now。

Moths is the 1st entry of presumably many spinoffs in The Resistance world, as J Michael Straczynski teams with Mike Choi for what is probably my favorite of The Resistance books so far, with a wonderfuly human story carried by a well-rounded and likable main character。 After the original, Reborns, and Uprising all approached the story as a political epic that was grand in scope, this volume is a much more grounded and intimate title that follows Emily Kai, a reborn who is also known as a Moth。 Moths is the 1st entry of presumably many spinoffs in The Resistance world, as J Michael Straczynski teams with Mike Choi for what is probably my favorite of The Resistance books so far, with a wonderfuly human story carried by a well-rounded and likable main character。 After the original, Reborns, and Uprising all approached the story as a political epic that was grand in scope, this volume is a much more grounded and intimate title that follows Emily Kai, a reborn who is also known as a Moth。 These beings are granted immense power but with a huge catch: You only have 6 months to live once you tap into your powers, leaving Emily with a ticking clock。 This leads her onto a journey of self-discovery set in the world of The Resistance, as Emily takes herself on an adventure that will certainly feel like a lifetime。The book itself is a much easier read than the other Resistance books, with this being one that I wanted to not put down compared to the others where I was taking a break after every other issue。 Emily is a fantastic character that actually appeared briefly in the first Resistance volume, with her powers being one of empathy, leading to some interesting narrative choices that Straczynski is able to play with in this volume。 There’s also some characters you may recognize from other Resistance books as well, with cameos that feel like they round out the world rather than like they are just sticking characters in random places for the hell of it。 The art by Choi is perfect for the story as well, even though the photo references he uses can be a bit much sometimes, leading to some weird images, but it’s still good for the most part。 Overall, this is easily the best of The Resistance books so far, and I’m finally in the groove of these books after 3 volumes and a one-shot。 Hopefully Telepaths can be just as strong as this was。 。。。more

A wonderful meditation on empathy, love, beauty and the human experience。

This collection of the six issue AWA series MOTHS was written by J。 Michael Straczynski。 It is an offshoot of The Resistance series he's been doing recently。 While I liked the first two installments of The Resistance, I found it a little harder to get into this series as a whole。The artwork is great and while I'm sure the writing is top notch, I fear that I just didn't get everything the writer was aiming for。 Whether it is due to me not being smart enough to grasp the concept or maybe (however This collection of the six issue AWA series MOTHS was written by J。 Michael Straczynski。 It is an offshoot of The Resistance series he's been doing recently。 While I liked the first two installments of The Resistance, I found it a little harder to get into this series as a whole。The artwork is great and while I'm sure the writing is top notch, I fear that I just didn't get everything the writer was aiming for。 Whether it is due to me not being smart enough to grasp the concept or maybe (however unlikely) Straczynski's writing just went over my head, I found that I was a little more glad the story ended so I could stop reading rather than the arc having reached its planned conclusion。I will say that the ending did hint at something far larger that could be waiting in the wings as this particular universe expands。 That holds some promise for whatever miniseries come next。 I just wish I'd enjoyed MOTHS a little bit more。 。。。more

Moths by J Michael Staczynsky is another installment to The Resistance franchise。 I'll be honest here - I wasn't impressed with this book。 I unfortunately seem to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with The Resistance in its entirety, spreading across all its offerings so far - on the one hand I admire and am impressed by the world building, but on the other I find myself disappointed with its lack of focus and confusing timelines across the three mini-series。 With Moths, it has to be said t Moths by J Michael Staczynsky is another installment to The Resistance franchise。 I'll be honest here - I wasn't impressed with this book。 I unfortunately seem to have a bit of a love/hate relationship with The Resistance in its entirety, spreading across all its offerings so far - on the one hand I admire and am impressed by the world building, but on the other I find myself disappointed with its lack of focus and confusing timelines across the three mini-series。 With Moths, it has to be said that this time the focus on characterisation was definitely there, but it sadly lacked the larger world building that made the other mini-series stand out。 The book is essentially a look at one of the characters and their abilities, but again, this presents quite confusingly as to how or why this all fits in and is relevant to the main stories presented in the prior mini-series'。 I also wasn't a fan of the art here。 It seemed like this used photography templates, which I'm personally not a fan of in general。 That said, once in a while there was some beauty here。 Overall, Moths doesn't really live up to the standard of it's preceding mini-series。 Once the world building is removed you're left with a pretty mediocre character exposé story that really doesn't feel like it belongs to anything。 All the elements are there, but the dots sadly don't feel like they connect。 。。。more
