Summary

It can’t happen here! (Or can it?) Engaging dystopian novel where the powers that be are intent on silencing the women of America。 Things start slowly and seemingly innocently, but things that nobody saw coming start happening and things go from bad to worse。 It can’t happen here。

I only really liked the last 100 pages of the book。 I didn't really like the main character and it was hard to root for her when I disagreed with alot of her actions。 But the idea of the book is really interesting and sometimes hard to read, since it doesn't feel as unlikely as it should。 I only really liked the last 100 pages of the book。 I didn't really like the main character and it was hard to root for her when I disagreed with alot of her actions。 But the idea of the book is really interesting and sometimes hard to read, since it doesn't feel as unlikely as it should。 。。。more

I found this book to be fast paced, sexy, engaging, and mainly satisfying except for Dalcher’s reliance on stereotypes to characterize the bad guys。

I felt a few characters needed further development and I would have liked to have learnt more about the son。

Amazing premise that was really well executed。 Some of the plot points were a little convenient but it didn’t detract from how gripping it was。

This is a dystopian fiction book about a world where women are limited to 100 words per day。 I love the idea of this book but the execution was a bit poor。 It was missing excitement, passion or even anger。 Basically it didn't make me want to read on after the 20 pages I was dedicated to read daily。 This is a dystopian fiction book about a world where women are limited to 100 words per day。 I love the idea of this book but the execution was a bit poor。 It was missing excitement, passion or even anger。 Basically it didn't make me want to read on after the 20 pages I was dedicated to read daily。 。。。more

This book ignited a furry in me。 I loved the flow of the book, I simply couldn’t put it down。

Sincerely one of my least favorite books yet, but thankfully just because of cringe-worthy writing rather than offensive content - which tends to be the case with my least favorites。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Great story , well written。 There were parts reading it made me so angry that these men think they can just shut women up and turn us into barefoot pregnant mutes ,the writing made it come alive so it was a great story。 We have jean who was a neurolingustic scientist and her husband patrick whos also a dr。 They have 4 kids and both work, but then a new man is made president and decides women are a problem and brings in new law, women cant work or have their own money or cars or phones。 They also Great story , well written。 There were parts reading it made me so angry that these men think they can just shut women up and turn us into barefoot pregnant mutes ,the writing made it come alive so it was a great story。 We have jean who was a neurolingustic scientist and her husband patrick whos also a dr。 They have 4 kids and both work, but then a new man is made president and decides women are a problem and brings in new law, women cant work or have their own money or cars or phones。 They also have to wear a counter on their wrist that counts the words they say per day, go over 100 and you get an electric shock! Even the little girls wore them! Before she was removed from her job she was working on a cure for aphasia, when the presidents brother has an accident and has apasia they bring her in to help him。 She first says no just to stick it to them but agrees only if they remove hers and her daughters counter and bring back her original team。 They agree。 She knows she can make the cure because they had it solved before they were shut down but shes hesitatent to tell them, she doesnt trust them。 On her team is a man, lorenzo, a man she is in love with but this is punishable by lifelong servitude if caught but she finds out shes pregnant with his baby。 Her husband is a nice man but she doesnt love him, he wants to save her from this life and knows she loves him so tells her to run with him。 In the end they devise a plan to bring this administration down and stop them using her cure as a bio weapon。 Patrick works close to the president and spikes them all with a deadly liquid and kills them all but he is killed on his escape。 Jean leaves with her kids and lorenzo to go to italy where her parents are。 Overall i really liked the story but the end was so anti climatic to me, patrick goes off does his job hes killed and thats it , its over。 I feel there should have been more to it , it was too quick and easy despite patrick dying。 But good story overall 。。。more

I'm glad I read Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation last year as it filled vin many of the missing details of this novel。Christianity is not really discussed much in the novel as it is not being criticized for the circumstances of the novel's setting。 The focus is about power and its abuse。 The powerful oppressing the the weak to further their ends。 I'm glad I read Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation last year as it filled vin many of the missing details of this novel。Christianity is not really discussed much in the novel as it is not being criticized for the circumstances of the novel's setting。 The focus is about power and its abuse。 The powerful oppressing the the weak to further their ends。 。。。more

This is my second of 3 Dalcher novels, all of which have similar themes of a strong female protagonist facing difficult odds in a dystopic world。 All 3 books (Femlandia and Master Class) are easy to digest, but left me a bit wanting。 They are good, and I don't regret the time spent reading them, but something was missing for me。 I guess my new standard is Station Eleven, and it is so much more compelling than any of Dalcher's novels。 I'm intrigued enough that if she writes another novel, I will This is my second of 3 Dalcher novels, all of which have similar themes of a strong female protagonist facing difficult odds in a dystopic world。 All 3 books (Femlandia and Master Class) are easy to digest, but left me a bit wanting。 They are good, and I don't regret the time spent reading them, but something was missing for me。 I guess my new standard is Station Eleven, and it is so much more compelling than any of Dalcher's novels。 I'm intrigued enough that if she writes another novel, I will probably go for it。 。。。more

I love dystopian novels, unfortunately they tend to be very hit or miss, with the emphasis on miss。 This one, however, was FANTASTIC。 I was hooked from the opening chapter and couldn’t put it down。 The world in this was horrifying and yet realistic, the characters were well written。 The characters and their development were interesting and I loved witnessing Jean find her voice。

Was heading for a solid 4 despite all the anti religious chat。。 however wth was that ending kiddo?? It just descended into total madness。。 why did they need to inject the chimp and the human side by side? Why did Jean just leave even after things improved Why did they kill Morgan?? Other than being annoying It’s not like he was the mastermind What actually did Patrick die for? And what did he do with the vials? Even in the awful 50s women were working they still COULD Work they had flipping lives they COULD get an education and even in the damn Victorian ages women could still teach or be maids or do “women jobs” vox is insanity even the gynaecologist is a man which doesn’t make much sense there’s no internal logic。。 The religious element is jarring and I do believe inaccurate Do we really believe trump acted out of religious beliefs Do we really believe isis act out of religious belief? That Uighur Muslims are extremists and THATS why they are being horrifically abused by the Chinese govt Religions don’t really condone any of these behaviours People are just insane MEN are insane The book lacks nuance The greatest world genocides are sometimes in the name of religion but we ALL know that’s not the real reason。 I kinda liked Lorenzo but it did vere of into mills and boons territory “He could pick me up with one hand he’s so huge and gorgeous” Like I get it hes hot Jeez 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️ 。。。more

kind of disappointing ): i found out after i finished the book that the author is a linguistics phd herself, a topic which is obviously a huge theme in the book。 it really feels like the author had an interesting premise and found a way to work a lot of her expertise into it, but everything else in the book was lacklustre。 i honestly found myself pretty bored and wishing things would actually happen for the last 75% of the book, which is kind of crazy in a world where women literally get electro kind of disappointing ): i found out after i finished the book that the author is a linguistics phd herself, a topic which is obviously a huge theme in the book。 it really feels like the author had an interesting premise and found a way to work a lot of her expertise into it, but everything else in the book was lacklustre。 i honestly found myself pretty bored and wishing things would actually happen for the last 75% of the book, which is kind of crazy in a world where women literally get electrocuted if they say more than 100 words a day。 the characters really fell flat in this book and the author leaned into stereotypes that had me cringing。。。 the petite, super smart asian neurosurgeon/scientist? the hippie lesbian activist? the sexy italian scientist who brews espresso in his office? come on girl。。。 morgan, the bad guy for a big chunk of the book, was such a cartoon villain。 he's short and trying to compensate for it, he's described to have small hands。。。 like i hate the guy too, but focusing on these random demeaning physical characteristics was not doing it for me。 let's talk about the actual atrocities he's committing please!also。 can't believe that at the very end it was primarily jean's husband and her secret lover that solved her problems and put a nice little bow on her life。 jean spends a lot of time frustrated at how passive her husband is, but she doesn't seem to see that she's the same。 。。。more

1。5 starsI really did not enjoy this like I was hoping I would。 I loved the concept of this so much but the execution was so bad! The one thing I did like was it’s commentary on how easy indoctrination is。This book was poorly written, lacked any real depth, had shitty characters and a boring plot。 I get what Vox was trying to do and I know it wanted to be a feminist novel but it ultimately fell flat not only because the main character Jean seemed to just hate other women, but points on feminism 1。5 starsI really did not enjoy this like I was hoping I would。 I loved the concept of this so much but the execution was so bad!
