little review because it’s 11:30 and i need some time to process my thoughts。okay so uzumaki, it’s um 。。 definitely something! let me just start by saying that the artwork was so perfect and i have fallen in love with ito’s art style。 the super gruesome panels were easy to understand, so i appreciate that! i also loved the character designs。 kirie is so pretty btw。 shuichi’s look really made sense on him idk。 i haven’t read a ton of manga but i have to say, this is at least a 9/10 for art。so now little review because it’s 11:30 and i need some time to process my thoughts。okay so uzumaki, it’s um 。。 definitely something! let me just start by saying that the artwork was so perfect and i have fallen in love with ito’s art style。 the super gruesome panels were easy to understand, so i appreciate that! i also loved the character designs。 kirie is so pretty btw。 shuichi’s look really made sense on him idk。 i haven’t read a ton of manga but i have to say, this is at least a 9/10 for art。so now onto the story itself! i’ve heard things about how ito’s stories don’t really make sense and i can see why now。 (spoilers ahead) i was wondering why none of the previous events hadn’t returned but rather “disappeared only to never return again”。 seems a bit unrealistic to me but what am i even talking about? the entire thing is unrealistic。 once i saw the snails make a comeback (shivers) i found it to be better。 the snails 。。。 ANYWAYS MOVING AWAY FROM SN*ILS! the ending had me disappointed。 not in the sense that it was a “bad” ending but it wasn’t what i was hoping for。 obviously, i’m rooting for the main characters here, not the crazy spiral which has taken over this town。 whatever! things happen! the actual explanation of the spiral had me confused but i’m not sure if it was even supposed to make sense。regardless, uzumaki is a special read and i dont think i will be forgetting about it anytime soon! (panels of human sn*ils are replaying in my head) 。。。more

The episodic slog makes it hard to get through, but the bookends of this are fantastic。

Featured on a BOOK CLUB episode of Frankenstein's Podcast! This is my first real experience with reading manga and - wow。 To say the least, Junji Ito's Uzumaki is profoundly bizarre, unsettling and gross but also deeply fascinating and oddly beautiful in a way。 I loved it。 I'll definitely be reading more of his stuff。 Featured on a BOOK CLUB episode of Frankenstein's Podcast! This is my first real experience with reading manga and - wow。 To say the least, Junji Ito's Uzumaki is profoundly bizarre, unsettling and gross but also deeply fascinating and oddly beautiful in a way。 I loved it。 I'll definitely be reading more of his stuff。 。。。more

Amazing。 Just when you think you've seen the worst of it, each chapter is somehow more horrifying than the last。 The imagination and artwork is incredible。 (view spoiler)[What stuck out to me as well was how much it reminds me of cyclical disasters that occur again and again throughout history; how people rebuild and quickly forget。 Though this was published well before that, the tsunami came to mind, and the warning stones that told people to not build beyond the marked points。 Some of the best Amazing。 Just when you think you've seen the worst of it, each chapter is somehow more horrifying than the last。 The imagination and artwork is incredible。 (view spoiler)[What stuck out to me as well was how much it reminds me of cyclical disasters that occur again and again throughout history; how people rebuild and quickly forget。 Though this was published well before that, the tsunami came to mind, and the warning stones that told people to not build beyond the marked points。 Some of the best horror is in denial of the truth, especially on a societal level。 In other news, eating the snail person while he was still alive wins my "most horrible" award, which is truly saying something with all this manga has to offer。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This was one of the wildest reads I’ve ever had, as well as just a damn good manga。 Junji Ito strikes such an amazing balance between the beautiful and the grotesque。 Several sequences and images throughout Uzumaki will be burned into my memory for a long, long time。 This is basically separated into three parts, with the narrative thread growing stronger as the book progresses。 I would say my favorite is part two (involving an absolutely horrifying sequence in a hospital ward), part one is more This was one of the wildest reads I’ve ever had, as well as just a damn good manga。 Junji Ito strikes such an amazing balance between the beautiful and the grotesque。 Several sequences and images throughout Uzumaki will be burned into my memory for a long, long time。 This is basically separated into three parts, with the narrative thread growing stronger as the book progresses。 I would say my favorite is part two (involving an absolutely horrifying sequence in a hospital ward), part one is more episodic and just shows different ways that the spiral manifests itself throughout the town, and part three is full on Mad Max insanity。 Kirie and Shuichi made for pretty meh protagonists, but it’s pretty clear that Ito’s focus isn’t so much on characters as it is themes and images, so I’m willing to look past that。I will be looking for Ito’s other works ASAP, this guy does horror manga like no one else。 。。。more

This manga was one hell of a ride。 The horror, the gore and the story was top notch。 At first u thought it was going to a classic horror story but the result exceeded my expectations。 Junji Ito is one hell of an artist。 Must read!!

Now this is cosmic horror done right。 Ito's exploration of obsession and the variety of ways a spiral could exist are truly fascinating。 The combination of Ito's mind to go to these various places and also being able to use his pen to translate it into art on the page is truly to be commended。Uzumaki (Japanese for 'spiral') is a manga about a town's obsession with spirals and the events that transpire within。 While it starts as a 'monster of the week' style format (likely due to its weekly publi Now this is cosmic horror done right。 Ito's exploration of obsession and the variety of ways a spiral could exist are truly fascinating。 The combination of Ito's mind to go to these various places and also being able to use his pen to translate it into art on the page is truly to be commended。Uzumaki (Japanese for 'spiral') is a manga about a town's obsession with spirals and the events that transpire within。 While it starts as a 'monster of the week' style format (likely due to its weekly publication in a manga magazine), the stories begin to follow each other sequentially around the halfway point, allowing consequences to be dwelled upon and expanded。 With that being said, it is not a happy story。 The whole point of cosmic horror is the threat is not something you can win against and that's really what's on display here。 There is very little character development (aside from a haircut) because the focus is on what's happening in the town and I think that just comes with the territory。 Without much character development, Ito is allowed to focus on the exploration of the town and everything that happens within, alongside the horrific works planted onto paper with ink。I genuinely believe that Uzumaki contains some of Ito's best art, both in ideas and execution of the thing on the page。 It's amazing how many things he can come up with that revolve around spirals and make them terrifying。 While some of them come across as obvious, there are others that are so ingenious that it makes you wonder how he came up with them。 As much as I want to give away some of my favourite uses of the spiral, I'd much rather you experienced them for yourself。 They are just as horrific as they are mesmerising。If you're on the fence about Ito, this is a perfect place to start。 Everyone says to start with Uzumaki and it's for good reason。 The ending can be a bit hit or miss with different people but I think it's one that fits with the tone of the book and I was happy with its conclusion。 What has been produced here is a great example of cosmic horror and art that conveys it。 While you won't necessarily find Lovecraftian Elder Gods drawn in here, there is still very much the allusion to them and I think it's pulled off sublimely。 。。。more

Full disclosure: I've read Uzumaki before。 Back in the early 2000s, closer to when it first came out。 It was creeping and insidious and frightening then, and it is the same now。 Junji Ito has a way of taking some that seems absurd and making it more real than the world around you。 I cannot recommend this enough to fans of graphic novels and horror。 Even writers of horror; you will learn so much about storytelling from this work。 It is insightful and horrifying and beautiful all at once。 I will s Full disclosure: I've read Uzumaki before。 Back in the early 2000s, closer to when it first came out。 It was creeping and insidious and frightening then, and it is the same now。 Junji Ito has a way of taking some that seems absurd and making it more real than the world around you。 I cannot recommend this enough to fans of graphic novels and horror。 Even writers of horror; you will learn so much about storytelling from this work。 It is insightful and horrifying and beautiful all at once。 I will say, tho, that it sticks with you in ways that can sometimes be unsettling。 。。。more

I don't think horror that Junji Ito writes in the genre for me。 I just don't personally think I can enjoy horror that is very weird and makes me feel uneasy。 I understand why many people love his book, but I don't think I will actually end up really loving a book that he writes。 I think reading a book that is a novel and reading manga can be really different when it comes to horror。 So me giving this book three stars is my problem rather than the book problem。 I don't think horror that Junji Ito writes in the genre for me。 I just don't personally think I can enjoy horror that is very weird and makes me feel uneasy。 I understand why many people love his book, but I don't think I will actually end up really loving a book that he writes。 I think reading a book that is a novel and reading manga can be really different when it comes to horror。 So me giving this book three stars is my problem rather than the book problem。 。。。more

Interesting how the author took something as simple as spirals and made it into something so terrifying。 Loved this book。 Each page is so well done you can stare at it for hours and still not have admired each stroke enough。

Honestly the most I can say is "what the fuck。" I did have some issues with it regarding the fact that the spiral phenomena are never explained, but it was really engaging and got more and more horrific with each chapter。 At first I thought, "Ok this is weird but I don't see why people say Junji Ito's work is so unsettling," but I immediately changed my mind。 I hope I don't have nightmares!
