Summary

"Lee’s series will stand as a pillar of epic fantasy and family drama。" Library Journal (starred review)

The Kaul siblings battle rival clans for honor and control over an East Asia-inspired fantasy metropolis in Jade Legacy, the page-turning conclusion to the Green Bone Saga。

Jade, the mysterious and magical substance once exclusive to the Green Bone warriors of Kekon, is now coveted throughout the world。 Everyone wants access to the supernatural abilities it provides, from traditional forces such as governments, mercenaries, and criminal kingpins, to modern players, including doctors, athletes, and movie studios。 As the struggle over the control of jade grows ever larger and more deadly, the Kaul family, and the ancient ways of the Kekonese Green Bones, will never be the same。

Battered by war and tragedy, the Kauls are plagued by resentments and old wounds as their adversaries are on the ascent and their country is riven by dangerous factions and foreign interference。 The clan must discern allies from enemies, set aside bloody rivalries, and make terrible sacrifices… but even the unbreakable bonds of blood and loyalty may not be enough to ensure the survival of the Green Bone clans and the nation they are sworn to protect。

Praise for the Green Bone Saga:

Considering that I was really not that big of a fan of the first installment, I am really glad I didn't give up on this series。 Following the great Jade War we got a conclusion that delivers on everything I expected。 The time jumps were jarring sometimes, but in the end it really turned out great。 Considering that I was really not that big of a fan of the first installment, I am really glad I didn't give up on this series。 Following the great Jade War we got a conclusion that delivers on everything I expected。 The time jumps were jarring sometimes, but in the end it really turned out great。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 "The clan is my blood and the Pillar is its master"This book was absolutely amazing and it would take me a really long time to put into words how amazing this entire series has been。 Fonda Lee has an absolute talent for making a series that has a little bit of everything, from action and gang wars, to intricate politics, to familial strife, and all of these elements are executed to perfection。 If I really wanted to nitpick the book, I’d say I had two small issues with it。 The first one is less "The clan is my blood and the Pillar is its master"This book was absolutely amazing and it would take me a really long time to put into words how amazing this entire series has been。 Fonda Lee has an absolute talent for making a series that has a little bit of everything, from action and gang wars, to intricate politics, to familial strife, and all of these elements are executed to perfection。 If I really wanted to nitpick the book, I’d say I had two small issues with it。 The first one is less important and that’s the fact that I wasn’t a huge fan of the couples we got in this book。 I never liked Shae and Woon, probably because I viewed Woon as being a more fatherly figure to Shae and found it weird how invested he was in her, not to mention he was married to someone else at the beginning of the book。 Having said that, their relationship is really not a huge factor in the book and I did enjoy their scenes together afterwards once they have their daugther and you can tell they genuinely love each other。 I was also not a big fan of Andy and Jiruhya。 I don’t know, I would’ve preferred him with someone like Lott probably, it would’ve been really nice and full circle for him to end up with someone that had been by his side in one aspect or another throughout his entire life。 I don’t dislike Jiruhya per se, but it just felt like a peripheral character we didn’t know much about that ended up by Andy’s side。 The other issue I had with the book is a bigger one, which is that I wish this series had been 4 books instead of 3。 Now usually I am someone that appreciates when authors know when to stop and don’t milk their series for books on end。 However, this series legitimately could’ve used another book。 I would’ve ended this book at around the 500-600 page mark, possibly when Niko comes back for Ru’s funeral and maybe have the dialogue that Ayt Mada has with Lula as an epilogue, and then dedicated the fourth book to two things: having an in depth look at how No Peak brings down the Mountain Clan while also expanding on the newer generation of No Peak characters。 Both of those things where missing in this book for me。 Jaya barely gets any time on page, and after Niko leaves for the GSI we honestly barely get any scenes with him。 I would’ve loved to of seen him deal with the pressure of coming back to No Peak, taking on all the roles Shae gave him and doing them as best as he can, coming to terms with his heritage and dealing with Ru’s death。 I also felt like it was a little anticlimatic that The Mountains masterplan and their eventual demise, which is what has been driving the last three books of the series, was basically resolved within 20 pages。 All of these things considered, I still rate this book and this whole series 5 stars。 It was an amazing series that had a lot more things going for it than against it and I really do recommend it to almost anyone。 The ending itself also felt very fitting and what I would’ve wanted from an end to this series: Hilo giving his life up for the clan, No Peak and The Mountain ending their blood feud and, of course, the full circleness of Bero with Andy in the final chapter。 。。。more

I have loved every minute of this epic saga。 I laughed, I stressed, I cried, I cheered, and with all 3 books, I stayed up way too late, desperate to know how it would end。 This book was everything I wanted and more。 Thank you, Fonda Lee, for this series, for the Kaul family。 I will think of and love them forever。 "The clan is my blood and the Pillar is its master。" I have loved every minute of this epic saga。 I laughed, I stressed, I cried, I cheered, and with all 3 books, I stayed up way too late, desperate to know how it would end。 This book was everything I wanted and more。 Thank you, Fonda Lee, for this series, for the Kaul family。 I will think of and love them forever。 "The clan is my blood and the Pillar is its master。" 。。。more

I’m having a tough time sorting through my feelings regarding this book because it was not at all what I expected but I think it’s definitely the ending the trilogy needed。 I really wasn’t prepared for it to span 20+ years and sometimes skipping several years from one chapter to the other, it really threw me off the first couple of times it happened。It did make the story a lot more realistic though and allowed us to see how the political situation slowly evolved over time。 It also made room for I’m having a tough time sorting through my feelings regarding this book because it was not at all what I expected but I think it’s definitely the ending the trilogy needed。 I really wasn’t prepared for it to span 20+ years and sometimes skipping several years from one chapter to the other, it really threw me off the first couple of times it happened。It did make the story a lot more realistic though and allowed us to see how the political situation slowly evolved over time。 It also made room for a lot of character growth all around which was really great to witness。Overall this has been a fantastic trilogy and I think on reread this last book might become my favorite of the three。 。。。more

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would! No complaints from me。 Fonda Lee continues to understand the assignment 🙌🙌🙌 Some Scattered Thoughts:The way time moves throughout the series is amazing。 Across all three books the story is not limited to a few months or a year, but spans over several years and decades。 It elevates the story and feels like you are getting the fullest version of events possible。 You are given the time to really see the growth of each character through the years。 If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would! I'm definitely a big fan and I loved this whole series。 Each of these three books are on my "favorites" shelf where they belong。 If you haven't read this series yet, start with Jade City ASAP and join the party。 。。。more

It's been more than a week since I finished this book。 I still can't stop thinking about these characters。 What Fonda Lee did with these characters and their relationships is amazing。 World building isn't as perfect as Jade City for me。 I still have pacing issues but not as much as Jade War。 But characters took these book to different level。 We finally got to see more of Ayt Mada。 I enjoyed every scene she was in。 Ayt Mada and No Peak outwitting one another is one of the best things in this book It's been more than a week since I finished this book。 I still can't stop thinking about these characters。 What Fonda Lee did with these characters and their relationships is amazing。 World building isn't as perfect as Jade City for me。 I still have pacing issues but not as much as Jade War。 But characters took these book to different level。 We finally got to see more of Ayt Mada。 I enjoyed every scene she was in。 Ayt Mada and No Peak outwitting one another is one of the best things in this book。 Character interactions, family dynamics and loyalty between clan members are outstanding。 They made a lasting impact on me。 。。。more

I cannot recommend this series highly enough to any fellow epic fantasy fans, it is one of my favorite things I've read literally ever。 Lee's characters and worldbuilding feel so intensely real, and I would hazard a guess that it is because Lee understands that our world is a complicated mess (both personally and politically) that we are all just trying to come to grips with。 Somehow, she also manages to guide us through the many layers of the No Peak vs。 Mountain war without letting us get lost I cannot recommend this series highly enough to any fellow epic fantasy fans, it is one of my favorite things I've read literally ever。 Lee's characters and worldbuilding feel so intensely real, and I would hazard a guess that it is because Lee understands that our world is a complicated mess (both personally and politically) that we are all just trying to come to grips with。 Somehow, she also manages to guide us through the many layers of the No Peak vs。 Mountain war without letting us get lost。Also, I should state clearly that I absolutely love the Kauls。 Are they a bit questionable sometimes? Yes。 Would I follow Hilo, Shae, Anden, and Wen to the ends of the earth if they asked? The Green Bone Saga might be the greatest fantasy series I've ever read。 There may have been other books I enjoyed more, but for me this series is unrivaled in the richness of the world-building, realism of the characters, and intricacies of the plot。 I don't think I've read another series that pulls off political intrigue as successfully and on as global of a scale as this one。 Somehow it manages to be incredibly escapist, while also being one of the most realistic portrayals of human character The Green Bone Saga might be the greatest fantasy series I've ever read。 There may have been other books I enjoyed more, but for me this series is unrivaled in the richness of the world-building, realism of the characters, and intricacies of the plot。 I don't think I've read another series that pulls off political intrigue as successfully and on as global of a scale as this one。 Somehow it manages to be incredibly escapist, while also being one of the most realistic portrayals of human character and political rivalry。 In fact, there is so much world-building and political machination that, with each book clocking in at 500+ pages, there were times where the story dragged for me。 However, every time the payoff remained worth the wait。The Green Bone Saga series follows members of the No Peak clan, an embattled, family-run syndicate that gets their power from rare, magic jade, as they struggle to maintain their relevancy in a nation that's moving away from isolation and into an increasingly globalized world。This saga takes morally gray characters to another level。 There are no "good" or "evil" characters, just political interests, alliances, and rivalries。 The characters are both incredibly flawed, yet sympathetic, and I don't think there was a single one whose chapters I didn't enjoy。While it feels a little bittersweet to close a chapter on this world, the third volume does a remarkable job tying up the stories of all the principal characters from previous books, as well as some new ones - it is a saga after all。 。。。more
