Summary

Part two of the epic Eisenhorn trilogy returns

A century after his recovery of the alien Necroteuch, Gregor Eisenhorn is one of the Imperial Inquisition’s most celebrated agents。 But when a face from his past returns to haunt him, and he is implicated in a great tragedy that devastates the world of Thracian Primaris, Eisenhorn’s universe crumbles around him。 The daemon Cherubael is back, and seeks to bring the inquisitor to ruin – either by his death, or by turning him to the service of the Dark Gods。

The Eisenhorn trilogy is getting better and better。 Usually, a trilogy has problems in respecting the reader's expectations, but this Malleus is everything that you wish would be improved in Xenos。 More coherent storytelling, more character development, less meaningless battles but more impactful scenes and I could go on。The villain is indeed a bit weak, but I can easily excuse this because the main battle is going on inside Eisenhorn。 The galaxy will never lack powerful foes, but how you fight The Eisenhorn trilogy is getting better and better。 Usually, a trilogy has problems in respecting the reader's expectations, but this Malleus is everything that you wish would be improved in Xenos。 More coherent storytelling, more character development, less meaningless battles but more impactful scenes and I could go on。The villain is indeed a bit weak, but I can easily excuse this because the main battle is going on inside Eisenhorn。 The galaxy will never lack powerful foes, but how you fight them, this is a more interesting inner battle。 。。。more

I love Dan Abnett but every book I’ve read of his seems like he isn’t aware of the page count。 This ended so lightning quick I was sure that it was going to be a cliffhanger until I got to it。That being said, an excellent detective novel set in the grimy worlds of the inquisition。 Eisenhorn and his retinue always come across as a likeable bunch of characters even when committing civil atrocities (probably helped by the first person narrative)

Michał Szymański

Better than the first book for two reasons。 First, has a much more deadly and interesting antagonist in the form of Cherubayel, second, has even more of the 40K atmosphere, with the parade on Thracian being by far the most Grimdark thing in a book so far for me。 The plot is strong, and the sense of mystery and adversity is felt throughout the book。 Much bigger stakes, and much more adversity than in the first book。

I would have preferred to give this book 3½ stars rather than 4, as the ending seemed, after quite an elaborate buildup, to be rushed。 The epilogue OTOH made up for it, pointing Gregor in new directions。

As I continue my descent into the 40K rabbit hole, the Eisenhorn Series continues to be a cut above。 I am extremely excited to continue into Hereticus and The Magos, then move to the Horus Heresy and, because I am a Necron player, The Infinite and the Divine。

Solid but not more。 Always nice to see our favourite badass inquisitor in action, but to me the ending seems more of an afterthought

Gregor Eisenhorn, surrounded by a cast of characters both old and new, finds himself at the center of a vast conspiracy orchestrated, seemingly, by Cherubael。Following a devastating attack on Thracian Primaris, events are set in motion leading Inquisitor Eisenhorn to one of two fates。 Either Eisenhorn is escorted to the prisons of the Inquisition, where he'll be branded a heretic and executed, or he locates the puppetmaster pulling the strings of far more sinister and powerful forces than any he Gregor Eisenhorn, surrounded by a cast of characters both old and new, finds himself at the center of a vast conspiracy orchestrated, seemingly, by Cherubael。Following a devastating attack on Thracian Primaris, events are set in motion leading Inquisitor Eisenhorn to one of two fates。 Either Eisenhorn is escorted to the prisons of the Inquisition, where he'll be branded a heretic and executed, or he locates the puppetmaster pulling the strings of far more sinister and powerful forces than any he's ever faced, where the future of the Empire will be decided。Dan Abnett seems to have skimmed over large sections of the narrative in this account of Eisenhorn's legacy, sometimes going so far as to reference these other puzzle pieces without filling them in for us。 Of course, upon reaching the climax of this tale, it makes perfect sense that a lot of those details are left out。 There is, after all, a universe-spanning mystery to unravel, and providing the reader/listener with some of those other elements would give far too much away。 It's a shame, though, because it makes for a book that feels less evenly paced and complete than the previous installment of the series。Though the events of Malleus certainly seem to be far more epic in scope than those of Xenos, something about the way they're documented in this book makes them feel more condensed。 This isn't a flaw, but it was a peculiar thing I happened to notice。The narration provided by Toby Longworth, as before, perfectly captures the grim, wry-humored tone of Gregor Eisenhorn in such a way that I can't imagine him sounding otherwise。 The voices provided for the additional characters are distinct enough--in most cases--to make the narrative flow smoothly。 。。。more

Abnett writes with unmatched finesse when it comes to Warhammer tales。 Everyone speaks of his cinematic like writing style, and for good reason, because it is one of those things everyone should experience at least once。This was a solid tale of espionage and adventure。 Abnett knows how to keep you guessing right up the the end, the sense of mythic awe he builds around his characters and the setting is matched only by a few。 This one ends with a compelling twist。

4。5Impressive and engrossing second part in Abnett's Eisenhorn yarn manages to be distinct from the original and even more compelling。 Solid world building, planet-hopping, vivid characters, loads of action and violence, the only real letdown is the oddly brusque ending, but I'll certainly be back for the rest of the series。 4。5Impressive and engrossing second part in Abnett's Eisenhorn yarn manages to be distinct from the original and even more compelling。 Solid world building, planet-hopping, vivid characters, loads of action and violence, the only real letdown is the oddly brusque ending, but I'll certainly be back for the rest of the series。 。。。more

Whilst I enjoyed Malleus, and it was wonderful to see Abnett describe some of the more populated worlds of the Imperium, this ended very abruptly, and I can't help but feel like he was a bit bored of the Story by the end of writing。 It was a strong endeavor throughout and introduced something I've come to appreciate - Abnett's take on Life in the Imperium of Man in the 41st millenium。 But the story itself wasn't as solid as Xenos。Yet, it is for those moments of actual Life in the Imperium that I Whilst I enjoyed Malleus, and it was wonderful to see Abnett describe some of the more populated worlds of the Imperium, this ended very abruptly, and I can't help but feel like he was a bit bored of the Story by the end of writing。 It was a strong endeavor throughout and introduced something I've come to appreciate - Abnett's take on Life in the Imperium of Man in the 41st millenium。 But the story itself wasn't as solid as Xenos。Yet, it is for those moments of actual Life in the Imperium that I still loved this。 Not an introductory volume by any stretch, but a satisfying follow up to Xenos and, well, more Eisenhorn is always good。 。。。more

Not quite as tightly plotted as the first one: in fact toward the end it feels like the author was rushing。 But it's still a thrilling ride it, and it compensates in other ways having richer and more varied characters and a bit more emotional depth。 Not quite as tightly plotted as the first one: in fact toward the end it feels like the author was rushing。 But it's still a thrilling ride it, and it compensates in other ways having richer and more varied characters and a bit more emotional depth。 。。。more

I will say this for Malleus, it is definitely a tighter book than Xenos。 It specially has a stronger start, where Xenos suffered with the diabolically boring section about Hubris。Unfortunately, Malleus has its own Hubris too, so to speak, only located near the end of the book, in the form of the bit about Cinchare。 That section, like the introductory bits of Hubris, I found agonisingly tedious。Beyond that, I enjoyed the book well enough。 I was a bit put off when the author once again killed a fe I will say this for Malleus, it is definitely a tighter book than Xenos。 It specially has a stronger start, where Xenos suffered with the diabolically boring section about Hubris。Unfortunately, Malleus has its own Hubris too, so to speak, only located near the end of the book, in the form of the bit about Cinchare。 That section, like the introductory bits of Hubris, I found agonisingly tedious。Beyond that, I enjoyed the book well enough。 I was a bit put off when the author once again killed a female character at the start for some underplayed bit of drama。 It was extremely predictable, and pointless because we don't see Ravenor all that much anyway。I also have to comment on something I have noticed from these two books so far, and is how the ultimate goal of each book changes gears midway。 In the first book we don't really hear anything about the Necrotauch until midway of the book at best, at which everything is suddenly about it。 The same happens here with Quixos。 I don't mind a good plot twist here and there, though both cases mentioned above felt far more heavy handed than that。 。。。more

This was probably even better than the first one。 Hard to tell。 So much happens in these stories that I struggle to recall all of it at the end。 Although that's probably mainly due to my ignorance of 40K lore。 In fact one of my favourite things about the series is learning about the 40K universe。 A very enjoyable read, a well written, action packed, clever story。 This was probably even better than the first one。 Hard to tell。 So much happens in these stories that I struggle to recall all of it at the end。 Although that's probably mainly due to my ignorance of 40K lore。 In fact one of my favourite things about the series is learning about the 40K universe。 A very enjoyable read, a well written, action packed, clever story。 。。。more

Still enjoying the vast universe and the grimdark atmosphere, however, I couldn't quite get into the plot of this one as much。 There were a few too many characters to keep track of without more of the narrative's attention being focused on them。 Additionally, for much of the book I was unsure why Eisenhorn was making the choices he made and why the plot was unfolding the way it did。 The story felt a little too loose; it was less cohesive, more scattered than in Eisenhorn's previous adventure。 Still enjoying the vast universe and the grimdark atmosphere, however, I couldn't quite get into the plot of this one as much。 There were a few too many characters to keep track of without more of the narrative's attention being focused on them。 Additionally, for much of the book I was unsure why Eisenhorn was making the choices he made and why the plot was unfolding the way it did。 The story felt a little too loose; it was less cohesive, more scattered than in Eisenhorn's previous adventure。 。。。more
