Summary

As a Striker, Talin was taught loyalty is life。

Loyalty to the Shield who watches your back, to the Strikers who risk their lives on the battlefield, and most of all to Mara, which was once the last nation free from the Karensa Federation’s tyranny。

But Mara has fallen。 And its destruction has unleashed Talin’s worst nightmare。

With her friends scattered by combat and her mother held captive by the Premier, Talin is forced to betray her fellow Strikers and her adopted homeland。 She has no choice but to become the Federation’s most deadly war machine—a Skyhunter。

Red is no stranger to the cruelty of the Federation or the torture within its Skyhunter labs, but he knows this isn’t the end for Mara—or Talin。 The link between them may be weak, but it could be their only hope to salvage their past and safeguard their future。

While the fate of a broken world hangs in the balance, Talin and Red must reunite the Strikers and find their way back to each other in this smoldering sequel to Marie Lu’s Skyhunter。

Just as good as Legend but Darker。 I usually like the first book better than the second one, but this book is really something。 Is dark and a bit depressing, every day time I read sat down to read it my heart ached for Talin and Red。 The book stars from where Talin was captured and turned into Skyhunter with Red, Jeran, Aramin, and Adena on the run, it is a fast paced book full of action and sadness。 Nevertheless, I enjoy every day page of it!

okay so i just finished my first ever marie lu series and i am truly truly obsessed… i loved how i felt about the characters and how i felt like i was a part of them。 i like that she made the striker crew strong characters and i felt like i connected with them。 the way marie lu writes is so so real and true and i can’t believe it’s taken me this long to pick up her books。 also i was honestly really satisfied with the ending i think it was perfect and it was what i wanted so can’t complain。 i do okay so i just finished my first ever marie lu series and i am truly truly obsessed… i loved how i felt about the characters and how i felt like i was a part of them。 i like that she made the striker crew strong characters and i felt like i connected with them。 the way marie lu writes is so so real and true and i can’t believe it’s taken me this long to pick up her books。 also i was honestly really satisfied with the ending i think it was perfect and it was what i wanted so can’t complain。 i do understand the critique about the overused kidnapping trope but i think that in the context of the story and how she wrote it it’s different and unique and changed。 。。。more

A great ending to this series - character growth, great backstory, a love story and some good twists。 Excellent book that I would recommend you read (along with book 1 in this series)。

Plot: I saw this said about the first book: “It felt like nothing was happening even though there’s so much happening,” and honestly, that’s a bit how I felt about this one。 There were, technically, a lot of fight scenes, some turns of plot, some different progressions towards their goal, etc。 but none of them felt extraordinarily urgent。 It just felt… okay, this is happening now… and now this… and now… Characters: These characters are from the previous book: Talin, a Striker (rebel fighter) and Plot: I saw this said about the first book: “It felt like nothing was happening even though there’s so much happening,” and honestly, that’s a bit how I felt about this one。 There were, technically, a lot of fight scenes, some turns of plot, some different progressions towards their goal, etc。 but none of them felt extraordinarily urgent。 It just felt… okay, this is happening now… and now this… and now… Characters: These characters are from the previous book: Talin, a Striker (rebel fighter) and Red, a deserting Skyhunter (enemy super-soldier) who share a mind link and are in love—but despite having known them previously, I actually felt more connected to them in the first book than the second; this one didn’t feel like it fleshed out the characters much more。 They felt semi-interchangable, all the same person with different names and different situations, rather than distinctly different personalities。 I care about them, and I like them as people, but as characters they felt rather meh。 Maybe it would’ve been different if I’d read Skyhunter immediately before, but IMO if you don’t keep your characters compelling throughout and rely on previously established emotions, it’s a job… less well done, I suppose。 Writing: It did its job。 I feel like it didn’t really do any more than that, and if I’m honest, some of the lines felt even a little cringe-y (especially when the characters were thinking about how much they loved another character)。 Which is like, what? I love Marie Lu to death? But I can’t tell if it’s because my standards for writing have risen immensely or if it’s something else。 I remember very much enjoying Rebel。 I know that I could go back and read Legend or something to see how I really feel, but I kind of don’t want to give the book a chance to shatter itself in my eyes。 Oh well。 If my standards for writing have risen, I blame fanfic。 Romance: As mentioned above, a lot of it felt kind of cringey。 And not that they were inherently immature, but just that things felt out of place; certain thoughts felt unprovoked, a lot of situations felt like there was a kiss not because it was a kiss moment but because she didn’t know where else to put a kiss, despite the situation really not being a reasonable situation。 But I did really enjoy the way it was an established relationship, mostly—a different thing to read than the usual getting together。 Established gave it a more steady feel—something you could count on。 On the other hand, maybe it would’ve been better in another book, because a little more turmoil in this book wouldn’t go amiss。 It did feel a little TOO steady。Anyway, lots of things worked that I just didn’t talk about here, but generally, I just felt eh about this one。 I enjoyed it。 It was entertaining。 I wouldn’t read it again。 Maybe I’d recommend it to someone who likes action and doesn’t put as much weight on compelling characters as much as I do。 。。。more

The characters? The world-building? The plot? Everything? (HALT。 This review contains major spoilers for the first book! Do NOT read further unless you are willing to be spoiled or have read the first book。 You have been warned。)Skyhunter follows Talin, our brave protagonist, a couple months after the events of the first book in the Skyhunter duet。 Current status: taken captive by the Premier, forced to become his personal Skyhunter under the threat of her mother dying。 Can't attack Premier for fear of something happening to Mother。 Oh, and did I mention that Mara, the last nation on the continent free of the Premier's rule, was just taken under。。。wait for it。。。 the same Premier's rule! How amazing 😃To make matters worse, we now have Red's POV in this book, and things aren't looking very bright for him。 Red and what's left of Mara's strikers are now in hiding, at risk of being captured and executed, or worse: getting turned into a Ghost。 Talin and Red have to find their ways back to each other and find a way to stop the Premier from destroying everything in his way, because that may just include them and everyone they love, in it。 “She feels like everything that has gone missing in my life, joy and love and laughter and companionship, all flooding back into me at once。 This is home。 This is what I've been searching for。 What I stayed alive for。” characters-Talin- To be honest, Talin is probably one of my favorite protagonists written by Marie Lu, other than June Iparis (June has an everlasting grip on my heart, and that's not gonna change ever, probably) and Adelina Amouteru (holy grail of VERY morally gray female protagonists 🙏)。 She's smart, she's brave, and she'll do anything to save her family。I loved how Lu didn't make Talin all self-sacrificing。 I mean, can you say you've really read YA if you can say you've never read a YA book where the main protagonist hasn't been forced to give up a couple family members or two to save the world? So, it's pretty realistic that Talin was willing to let the world burn in order to save her family。 Isn't that what most people would do? Anyways, Talin supremacy。Red- I found Red to be a little icky in the last book, but I loved him in this book。 His POV and background make sense! His feelings towards everyone else and Talin is SO CUTE。 How can you not love Red?Adena- Adena kinda annoyed me in the last book, but I still like her。 This girl pretty much single handedly saves the group on multiple occasions。 She doesn't get thanked enough for it, too。 What a queen。Jeran- my poor baby 😭Jeran deserves the entire world and everything else。 He deserves nothing else。 I aspire to be Jeran。 In fact, I took a skyhunter quiz。 Guess who I got? Jeran。 I am honored。 I mean, I'd be honored to get any of the four, but I'm especially honored to get Jeran。 I am in probably as talented/graceful as Jeran, but I like to think I'm as sweet and shy。 Plus, knowing multiple languages is a skill I'd love to have。Aramin- Justice for Aramin because we don't ever get enough of this KINGConstantine- I found him to actually be the most interesting character out of all of them。 I don't like this man, like, at all, but his character is fascinating。 Especially regarding him and his brother。 I thought their arc was the most well constructed out of any of the characters'。 It was very different and interesting to read, while adding many layers to his character。 His ending was actually pretty satisfying, in my opinion, because it tied up his arc neatly。 Talin's mom- my queen, my lord, my saviour。 a boss lady。 absolute queen 👑 “That’s the thing about evil。 You don’t need to be it to do it。 It doesn’t have to consume all of you。 It can be small。 All you have to do is let it exist。” plotline- The plot, in my opinion, was so much better than the first book's。 It was exciting, and so much was happening。 The plot still isn't the best aspect of the book, but it was still very fun to read。 I especially loved the second half of the book。 There were all of these twists and turns, and so much happened。 The plot twists always take such a completely different turn from what you expect。 I'm just gonna say that I did not think it was going to end like AT ALL。 world-building- The world-building is Lu at her very best。 It's so beautifully done。 The dystopian setting and its connection to the past was amazing to read。 It's kind of the world-building in Skyhunter, but multiply that by ten。 It's detailed and well-written。 While the Skyhunter world is definitely not one I would want to live in for obvious reasons 😃it really did feel like I was there with Talin and Red, flying over the cities and land, dreaming shared dreams。 “Action without heart is meaningless。” writing- It's the best writing of Lu's books so far。 Period。 I think that possibly The Kingdom of Back could give it competition just because of how flowery and lyrically-written that book is, but if you read all her books, you can see the evolution and development of her writing。The writing is so detailed and perfectly-written that it feels like I'm in Karensa and Mara, feeling everything that Talin and Red feel。 Again, some of Marie Lu's best writing by far。 I'm especially excited to see her other works, because I'm convinced her writing will just keep getting better and better, if it isn't perfect already。 representation- Talin! Aramin and Jeran! Jeran! Adena! There's so much representation in this book and I love it <3 Like how we have a main character who doesn't speak, LGBT+ characters, POC characters, etc etc。 It was so great to have a representative cast, something that the author's always been great at including。 relationships-I'm so grateful for the romance in this book because I would've actually died of the lack of romance/slow burn, but it was refreshing to read a book free of romance and showing us Talin and Red's healing process, which was much more important than romance。 The slow-burn was worth it, though 😩。 Talin and Red are so cute, though <3 They're my loves <3Aramin and Jeran are my OTPs, though。 They're so very cute。 Their relationship is my everything。 I adore them, both individually and especially together。 “After all, getting into a prison is never the hard part。” overall-One of my favorite books this year。 I adore this book and this duology, and I'm so sad that this series has ended。 I recommend this duology to EVERYONE。 It's genuinely one of the best YA dystopians I've ever read, and highly underrated。 More people need to read this series! It's exciting, action-packed, and overall an amazing read。 Especially if you want to cry a little bit in the process 😭 “The warmth of having Red nearby seems so real that I lean into it, letting myself believe that if I wanted to, I could touch his hand, touch his face, pull him to me, feel his whisper on my skin”5 stars! 。。。more

I was greatly underwhelmed with this book。 Whoever told Marie Lu this was ready to publish, I’m disappointed in them。 I loved the Legend series and was mostly satisfied with Skyhunter, but this one… it could have been so much better。 Unlike Skyhunter, this book alternated between Red and Talin’s POVs。 That could have been amazing and insightful and thought-provoking — given their different biases and perceptual sets, things should be seen in very different lights。 But despite the fact that Red a I was greatly underwhelmed with this book。 Whoever told Marie Lu this was ready to publish, I’m disappointed in them。 I loved the Legend series and was mostly satisfied with Skyhunter, but this one… it could have been so much better。 Unlike Skyhunter, this book alternated between Red and Talin’s POVs。 That could have been amazing and insightful and thought-provoking — given their different biases and perceptual sets, things should be seen in very different lights。 But despite the fact that Red and Talin are wildly different people from very different backgrounds, the voices they’re written with sound exactly the same。 I missed a chapter heading telling me narration was switching from Talin to Red and I literally could not tell it had swapped until he mentioned Talin’s name。Even besides POV snafus, the writing was just flat all around。 Short, choppy sentences and lots of telling (vs。 showing), and there was this weird thing with Red where his ‘inner voice’ was talking to him, but it just read really weird。 And it was all he said, she asked, he sighed, she replied… one would think a New York Times best-selling author could mix it up a bit, no? The pacing was all over the place, too — the first two thirds just dragged on and on, and the last third went so quick it felt like a whole other book had been ruthlessly chopped to size and stuffed in the back。 I would have been much happier with two shorter, better written books。Even if the book was technically flawless, I still would have disliked the ending。 We actually start empathizing with Constantine。 He’s described as a scared young man, he displays glimpses of humanity, we are given a tidbit of his tragic childhood — even Talin, who hates his guts, says something to the effect of ‘I suppose even monsters were children once。’ If this was a trilogy instead of just two books, he could’ve had an amazing character arc (likely ending in tragic, redemptive death) and I would have been satisfied。 But of course we couldn’t have that。 Instead he flies off the handle, initiates mass bloodshed and chaos in his own capital, and Talin stabs him。 Good times。Overall, the whole book was so much less than I was expecting and it makes me so sad because I really did want to like it。 In the end, I only powered through the sluggish first half because I was mildly curious as to the ending。 And because it was due back to the library, and I didn’t want to return it half-read。 。。。more

Steelstriker is a dystopian fantasy where Talin and Red have been turned into Skyhunters, deadly weapons created by the Premier。 In desperation for her friends and family, Talin joins a rebellion against the Premier。I definitely thought having Red’s point of view was more insightful, as I could see what both Talin and Red were feeling。 Both Skyhunter and Steelstriker were dark books, and I was slightly disappointed by this series compared to Marie Lu’s other books。 Overall Steelstriker was a sus Steelstriker is a dystopian fantasy where Talin and Red have been turned into Skyhunters, deadly weapons created by the Premier。 In desperation for her friends and family, Talin joins a rebellion against the Premier。I definitely thought having Red’s point of view was more insightful, as I could see what both Talin and Red were feeling。 Both Skyhunter and Steelstriker were dark books, and I was slightly disappointed by this series compared to Marie Lu’s other books。 Overall Steelstriker was a suspenseful and adventurous read。 。。。more

Why did none of our team get them? I don't know I just think there were some missing connections that had me wondering about them during my reading。Either way, I highly recommend this duology。 It is beautifully written and tackles some very important issues while giving you the chance to dive into the beauty and the horrors of the Karensa Federation with an awesome team of Strikers。 。。。more
