Summary

NOW AVAILABLE AS A SOFT COVER TRADE PAPERBACK: A gorgeous original graphic novel from the bestselling creators of KILL OR BE KILLED, MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN JUNKIES, and CRIMINAL。

Max Winters, a pulp writer in 1930s New York, finds himself drawn into a story not unlike the tales he churns out at five cents a word--tales of a Wild West outlaw dispensing justice with a six-gun。 But will Max be able to do the same when pursued by bank robbers, Nazi spies, and enemies from his past?

One part thriller, one part meditation on a life of violence, PULP is unlike anything award-winning BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS have ever done before。 This celebration of pulp fiction set in a world on the brink is another must-have hardcover from one of comics' most acclaimed teams。

My first Historical Graphic Fiction! I really enjoyed the back and forth of the Wild West to WWII。 For ages 17 and up due to Trigger Warnings : Violence, Language, Racism, Illness, Death

This is a pretty classic Brubaker/Phillips short story about a guy who's trying to do right by himself and others after not being so great of a guy before。 It mixes western pulp and 1930s pulp, and you're rooting for the guy。 This is a pretty classic Brubaker/Phillips short story about a guy who's trying to do right by himself and others after not being so great of a guy before。 It mixes western pulp and 1930s pulp, and you're rooting for the guy。 。。。more

This was fine, however much too short to be of any real impact。 I wish the characters had been fleshed out more, and there’s a past timeline that I wished had been developed more, but the art style was nice, and the plot fast paced so I definitely didn’t hate it。

Been a devout fan of Brubaker’s writing and Phillips’ art since the very beginning。 Got everything they’ve ever done together。 However, this one was a disappointment。 They had so much potential for a great idea with original characters but the whole thing comes across very phoned in。 Characters are two dimensional and hackneyed as hell。 The art is uninspired and characters look similar to past endeavors。。。 3/5 It’s a quick read so worth borrowing from the library

Art⭐️⭐️⭐️(not bad; golden age comic style is just not my flavour)Story⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️(tropey as well, but in a very skilful not cheesy way。) A better than decent, perhaps essential homage to pulp。

"So。。。who are these people who deserve to be stolen from?"The fucking Nazis。"Short, tight, and totally thrilling。 There's not a lot of new ground covered in this story, but it nails everything it sets out to do。 Brubaker covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time, quickly developing his characters in ways that tell us everything we need to know and a little extra。 They may be familiar archetypes, but they're easy to invest in, and Brubaker imbues them with a quiet weariness that makes "So。。。who are these people who deserve to be stolen from?"The fucking Nazis。"Short, tight, and totally thrilling。 There's not a lot of new ground covered in this story, but it nails everything it sets out to do。 Brubaker covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time, quickly developing his characters in ways that tell us everything we need to know and a little extra。 They may be familiar archetypes, but they're easy to invest in, and Brubaker imbues them with a quiet weariness that makes it easy to root for them。 And the plot, as straightforward as it seems, is immensely satisfying to watch, as it expertly embraces and subverts a lot of the tropes you would expect from a noir/western。It might be the artwork that steals the show, though, as Sean and Jacob Phillips illustrate the story with sharp colors and distinct lines。 This looks like noir but feels like a western, and much of that is accomplished in the way the book is drawn and colored。 Great, great stuff。This is an easy 4。5 stars for me。 I wish it was a bit longer, to let some of the story-beats play out a bit more, but at >100 pages, Pulp is a tightly written and incredibly satisfying story。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

Pulp is perhaps one of the best things to come out in 2020。Written by Ed Brubaker and Drawn by Sean Phillips, Pulp is about an aging writer in the '30s, who wants to secure a good wealthy life for his wife before he kicks the bucket。 In order to do so, he returns to the ways of old。Great storytelling, and solid characterisation not only make this one shot graphic novel intriguing, but also make it quality。 Pulp is perhaps one of the best things to come out in 2020。Written by Ed Brubaker and Drawn by Sean Phillips, Pulp is about an aging writer in the '30s, who wants to secure a good wealthy life for his wife before he kicks the bucket。 In order to do so, he returns to the ways of old。Great storytelling, and solid characterisation not only make this one shot graphic novel intriguing, but also make it quality。 。。。more

What happened to Gary Cooper, the strong silent type?- Tony SopranoEd Brubaker píše príbehy zo starej školy, o ktorých som si myslel, že sú už dávno preč。 A hovorí v nich o hrdinoch, ktorí sú už naozaj dávno preč。 Krásne nostalgická kriminálka ako to od Brubakera očakávame。 Tonymu Sopranovi by sa určite páčila。

This graphic novella is about a Wild West outlaw who has grown old and settled down in 1930s New York as a writer for a pulp Western magazine。 It explores the changing of times, values, and the meaning of life towards the end。 The art style switches between a stylized, mostly colorless rendition of the Wild West and a more typical, colorful modern style。 It is excellent。

Ed Brubaker does what he does best which is hard boiled pulp fiction and expertly illustrated by Sean Phillips。In his younger days Max Winters was an outlaw cowboy and who is now an aging pulp fiction writer for a magazine in which he enbues his tales with his own personal experiences。 Living in the great depression he finds himself desperate to support his loving wife and finds himself back to his old ways。Before he can commit a robbery he stopped by an old familiar face who asks for his help i Ed Brubaker does what he does best which is hard boiled pulp fiction and expertly illustrated by Sean Phillips。In his younger days Max Winters was an outlaw cowboy and who is now an aging pulp fiction writer for a magazine in which he enbues his tales with his own personal experiences。 Living in the great depression he finds himself desperate to support his loving wife and finds himself back to his old ways。Before he can commit a robbery he stopped by an old familiar face who asks for his help in stopping the most vilest of villians, Nazis。A great read。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 Great artwork and great action。 (view spoiler)[An old man in 1939 recounts his tales of being a Wild West outlaw and burnish them for a comic。 When he starts having trouble with that and realizes his age is catching up with him, he hatches a plan steal some money in order to set up his family before he dies。 Before he can, a former Pinkerton's detective who used to chase him invites him to steal money from Nazi sympathizers in New York。 (hide spoiler)] I really liked this book。 Great artwork and great action。 (view spoiler)[An old man in 1939 recounts his tales of being a Wild West outlaw and burnish them for a comic。 When he starts having trouble with that and realizes his age is catching up with him, he hatches a plan steal some money in order to set up his family before he dies。 Before he can, a former Pinkerton's detective who used to chase him invites him to steal money from Nazi sympathizers in New York。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

the first story i’ve read in a while that truly gripped me。 it’s part western, part noir, part revenge thriller, part heartbreaking tale of morality and aging and loss。 it’s so rich with detail that it could easily be spun out into a whole series, but it also feels enough on its own。 stunning。

I’m giving this a 4 but it could be less because this story could have been more。 It is pretty and it is a fun, easy read but if you have read this creative pair’s Criminal series or the Kill or Be Killed books, then you know what you’re in for。 Juxtaposing the main character’s young days as a Wild West outlaw against his elderly decline in New York just before the outbreak of WWII added a nice depth to this。 As did the main character’s late (but not too late) realization that he wasn’t as much I’m giving this a 4 but it could be less because this story could have been more。 It is pretty and it is a fun, easy read but if you have read this creative pair’s Criminal series or the Kill or Be Killed books, then you know what you’re in for。 Juxtaposing the main character’s young days as a Wild West outlaw against his elderly decline in New York just before the outbreak of WWII added a nice depth to this。 As did the main character’s late (but not too late) realization that he wasn’t as much “a good guy” as he had always told himself。 。。。more

This slim period-hopping book has multiple overlapping crime stories that feature cowboys, Pinkertons, Nazis and the fun meta-twist of a down-on-his luck pulp writer。 If you don’t appreciate the genius in that tangle, I’d encourage you to go back in time and rethink your lobotomy。

Ed Brubaker knows how to spin a good yarn。 I went into this one blind and knowing nothing about it outside of the creative team and the knowledge that they've never let me down in the past, and I'm glad to say that streak holds true with Pulp。 A short and concise story with perfectly rendered art for the feelings it was trying to evoke, this was a great little piece of escapism with a message and I absolutely loved every minute。 Ed Brubaker knows how to spin a good yarn。 I went into this one blind and knowing nothing about it outside of the creative team and the knowledge that they've never let me down in the past, and I'm glad to say that streak holds true with Pulp。 A short and concise story with perfectly rendered art for the feelings it was trying to evoke, this was a great little piece of escapism with a message and I absolutely loved every minute。 。。。more

Disappointing book from Brubaker/Phillips。 They have set the bar incredibly high with Fatale, Vol。 1: Death Chases Me and Criminal, Vol。 1: Coward。 Anything that falls short, despite being pretty good is still a disappointment。 Disappointing book from Brubaker/Phillips。 They have set the bar incredibly high with Fatale, Vol。 1: Death Chases Me and Criminal, Vol。 1: Coward。 Anything that falls short, despite being pretty good is still a disappointment。 。。。more

(Zero spoiler review)As long as Brubaker and Philips keep working together, there will always be greatness left within the comics medium。 The former greats of Marvel and DC may be locked in a bitter struggle to see who can alienate their fans, racing headlong towards apathy and irrelevance。 The future of comics will very likely be independent titles, and if they keep putting titles like Pulp out, then the passing of the two former heavyweights wont be quite as depressing as it could have been。 I (Zero spoiler review)As long as Brubaker and Philips keep working together, there will always be greatness left within the comics medium。 The former greats of Marvel and DC may be locked in a bitter struggle to see who can alienate their fans, racing headlong towards apathy and irrelevance。 The future of comics will very likely be independent titles, and if they keep putting titles like Pulp out, then the passing of the two former heavyweights wont be quite as depressing as it could have been。 I pretty much loved everything about this book。 An easy complaint could be its short length, although when the dust settles and clearer perspective sets in, I wouldn't quite know where to add to it。 There is no fat on this whatsoever。 Every page, every panel is masterfully crafted。 Its short, sharp, and a hell of a ride while it lasts。 I immediately cared for the characters in a way that far longer, more drawn out stories failed to have me doing。 Brubaker is on top form here, and while it may not be remembered quite as fondly as his other masterworks in the years to come, that would only likely be due to the supreme body of his work, and again, this books shorter length。 Everyone else executed their duties with near perfect aplomb as well。 Philips may not be the most technically gifted of artists, but he knows exactly how to convey the feeling of any scene he is tasked with。 These men are like two peas in a pod now。 I simply can't imagine them working independently of each other。 Perhaps most surprising of all, colourist Jacob Philips, Sean's son handles duties here, and he absolutely nails it。 If you thought, as I did, that Philips' son was picked because of who his old man was and the possible negative connotations of this, then you can breath easy, because his work is nothing short of stellar here。 His artistic choices elevate this above the previous Brubaker/Philips titles I've read and loved, colour wise anyway。 One that all rolls up into a brief, yet sterling piece of storytelling。 Really can't recommend this highly enough。 4。75/5OmniBen。 。。。more
