Summary

The National Book Award–winner Patti Smith updates her treasure box of a childhood memoir about “clear unspeakable joy” and “just the wish to know” with a radiant new afterword, written during the pandemic and reflecting on current times。 This expanded paperback edition also includes new photographs by the author。

A great book about becoming an artist, Woolgathering tells of a child finding herself as she learns the noble vocation of woolgathering, “a worthy calling that seemed a good job for me。” She discovers—often at night, often in nature—the pleasures of rescuing “a fleeting thought。” Woolgathering calls up our own memories, as the child “glimpses and gleans, piecing together a crazy quilt of truths。” Smith shares the fierce, vital pleasures of stargazing and wandering。 Her new Afterword, penned during the quarantine, opens new horizons in “the scarcely charted landscape of memory governed by clouds。”

Woolgathering celebrates the sacred nature of creation in Smith’s singular language, acclaimed as “glorious” (NPR), “spellbinding” (Booklist), “rare and ferocious” (Salon), and “shockingly beautiful” (New York Magazine)。

This is a beautiful, quiet, thoughtful little book of self-reflections written almost entirely in prose poetry, interspaced with poems about Smith’s life, family, and loved ones, including Sam Shepard。 The focus is mainly on Smith’s childhood and moments of memory that unfold like home movies or photographs。 There are accompanying photos that are small gems in their own right。 Each time I read a work by Patti Smith I fall in love with her again: her imagery, her passion, her spirit, her art。 All This is a beautiful, quiet, thoughtful little book of self-reflections written almost entirely in prose poetry, interspaced with poems about Smith’s life, family, and loved ones, including Sam Shepard。 The focus is mainly on Smith’s childhood and moments of memory that unfold like home movies or photographs。 There are accompanying photos that are small gems in their own right。 Each time I read a work by Patti Smith I fall in love with her again: her imagery, her passion, her spirit, her art。 All seem to be swirling around in a vortex that can be experienced through a raucous rock stage ritual or a quiet piece of verse on the page。 This book is a great example of the latter。 。。。more

This book is beautifully written。 I love how Patti Smith strings together her life in this poetic way。 But mostly I loved this book because it reminds me of my beautiful friend, Emilie, who let me borrow her copy。

A little piece of magic held in my hand。Patti has a way with her, a touch of the other, the beyond and in this small piece of work, it shines through。Thirteen poems/stories that give an insight into the beauty of her mind。 And as always, I learn a little more about her than I had realised previously。There are times I read her work and feel that why should I be even attempting to write。 After all, I will never be a great writer or a great poet, and yet after I finished this book, I immediately ru A little piece of magic held in my hand。Patti has a way with her, a touch of the other, the beyond and in this small piece of work, it shines through。Thirteen poems/stories that give an insight into the beauty of her mind。 And as always, I learn a little more about her than I had realised previously。There are times I read her work and feel that why should I be even attempting to write。 After all, I will never be a great writer or a great poet, and yet after I finished this book, I immediately rushed off and completed a short story that will fit very well at the end of my current anthology。 There is something about great work that inspires me; equally, great works make me disfigure the poor books。 Now, another previously pristine book covered in scribbled notes and underlines。I learned in reading this of ‘Kimberly's’ meaning and words, one of my favourite Patti Smith songs。 The previous stories tell of her life, of her love for her sister, and so much more and suddenly, in reading the lyrics of ‘Kimberly’, every line is on fire with meaning。There are three great pieces in this for me as follows。The WoolgatherersA simple tale of old traditions, and yet it comes across as magical, almost alien。 Am I the only one that, in reading, saw so much more below the surface?Beneath the great walnut trees the brethren came to restIndian RubiesI had a ruby。 Imperfect, beautiful like faceted blood。 It came from India, where they wash up on the shore。And for me, the final piece was ‘Kimberly’ because now every word made sense。 No more was their secrets within the song itself。 All had been revealed in the laying down of her words。 。。。more

yo this verse kinda slaps??? it's just,,, so twisty-turny and magical, lots of frozen-in-time moments described so beautifully。 A lot of the moments described in this novella aren't noble, or in some cases, even that noteworthy? but by putting the simple, magical moments down in verse, it dignifies them—it dignifies her life— in such a beautiful way。 yo this verse kinda slaps??? it's just,,, so twisty-turny and magical, lots of frozen-in-time moments described so beautifully。 A lot of the moments described in this novella aren't noble, or in some cases, even that noteworthy? but by putting the simple, magical moments down in verse, it dignifies them—it dignifies her life— in such a beautiful way。 。。。more

This is a memoir told, basically, in blank verse。 Maybe I'll come back with a rating once I understand it a little more, but even upon a blissful first reading, in awe, I can see the magic and beauty glowing off the pages。 This is a memoir told, basically, in blank verse。 Maybe I'll come back with a rating once I understand it a little more, but even upon a blissful first reading, in awe, I can see the magic and beauty glowing off the pages。 。。。more
