Summary

Oct。 11th, 1943 - A British spy plane crashes in Nazi-occupied France。 Its pilot and passenger are best friends。 One of the girls has a chance at survival。 The other has lost the game before it's barely begun。

When "Verity" is arrested by the Gestapo, she's sure she doesn't stand a chance。 As a secret agent captured in enemy territory, she's living a spy's worst nightmare。 Her Nazi interrogators give her a simple choice: reveal her mission or face a grisly execution。

As she intricately weaves her confession, Verity uncovers her past, how she became friends with the pilot Maddie, and why she left Maddie in the wrecked fuselage of their plane。 On each new scrap of paper, Verity battles for her life, confronting her views on courage and failure and her desperate hope to make it home。 But will trading her secrets be enough to save her from the enemy?

Harrowing and beautifully written, Elizabeth Wein creates a visceral read of danger, resolve, and survival that shows just how far true friends will go to save each other。 Code Name Verity is an outstanding novel that will stick with you long after the last page。

I've read this book a couple of times many years ago。 I actually gave 20 copies of this book away to strangers as part of World Book Night in 2014*。 It is a well written and amazingly crafted book。 I knew the ending going in but couldn't remember the exact details - but still finished the book in tears (and wouldn't have had it any other way)。 I was a little worried about reading a book I loved many years ago because, what if it wasn't as good as I remembered or I didn't love it as much? Heartbreaking and beautifully written story of women supporting each other in WWII。

Team friendship forever! I loved this book。 The voices leapt off the page so freely。 I truly miss these two women, now that I'm finished reading。 And a brilliant structure enfolds this story, too。 As it's shaped, a beautiful paean emerges to show how women can support, love and inspire each other to be more than they might ever individually imagine for themselves。 Team friendship forever! Solid 4 stars。 I enjoyed the overall story and the confident female characters and their strong relationships。 I also really liked the very separate parts/perspectives that filled in the gaps for each other。 However, I struggled at times to stay in the story。 Still a good book with some good writing。

I’ve read several books about women involved in WWII。 The Rose Code, The Lost Girls of Paris and The Lilac Girls were all intriguing。 Code Name Verity dealt with similar subject of women code breakers and spies but written in an entirely unique way。 At the beginning, I had no idea who the narrator was。 I hadn’t guessed who it was when it was revealed in the story and I was surprised。 The whole novel written like notes between best friends was not always easy to follow, but charming none the less I’ve read several books about women involved in WWII。 The Rose Code, The Lost Girls of Paris and The Lilac Girls were all intriguing。 Code Name Verity dealt with similar subject of women code breakers and spies but written in an entirely unique way。 At the beginning, I had no idea who the narrator was。 I hadn’t guessed who it was when it was revealed in the story and I was surprised。 The whole novel written like notes between best friends was not always easy to follow, but charming none the less。 This writing style made me want to be friends with these remarkable women, especially Julie。 Her ability to be compliant and rebellious at the same time, her humor, and her intelligence to outsmart the Nazi’s remind me of a female version of Hogan’s Heroes。 One thing all these World War II novels do have in common is how amazing the women characters are。 The strength, courage, and resiliency of the women, although fictional, are based on real people。 Would I be able to do what they did? I’d like to believe if I faced similar threats I would do what I have to do, but I hope I never “get” to find out。 。。。more

The story lines of both Maddie and Julie both are very engaging, especially as we learn more about each from the other。 I did thoroughly enjoy this book, but something about it seems a little forgettable。

The first half of this book was a struggle for me, in part because I did not find the narrator’s present time story telling very interesting。 It was hard to get through and at times I wasn’t sure that I was going to finish。 The second half of the book though was much better which pulled my rating up to a 3。 A great ending。

While it starts a bit slow, it quickly picks up and then you can't put it down。 It is heartbreaking, tragic, and just a little bit hopeful as it doesn't try to gloss over a horrible period in history。 I'm surprised it is classified as a young adult book。。。。 I don't think anyone under 15 or so should read it。 While it starts a bit slow, it quickly picks up and then you can't put it down。 It is heartbreaking, tragic, and just a little bit hopeful as it doesn't try to gloss over a horrible period in history。 I'm surprised it is classified as a young adult book。。。。 I don't think anyone under 15 or so should read it。 。。。more

3。5 starsI really don't have anything bad to say about this book。 Like all the blurbs say on the back, it is indeed well-plotted and heart-wrenching。 The narrative structure was used nicely。 I really did enjoy that element。 Still, there was something more that I wanted, but I'm not sure what that was。 Prettier writing, maybe? What was there was perfectly fine。 Actually, I think what I really wanted was to witness more of this legendary central friendship。 It was a bit hard for me to truly believ 3。5 starsI really don't have anything bad to say about this book。 Like all the blurbs say on the back, it is indeed well-plotted and heart-wrenching。 The narrative structure was used nicely。 I really did enjoy that element。 Still, there was something more that I wanted, but I'm not sure what that was。 Prettier writing, maybe? I listened to this as an audiobook on Audible。 The narrators were really good。 This is just not my typical type of book and I found myself loosing interest。 But I think I’d you are a lover of historical fiction that you would really enjoy it!

I will say the first half of this book was a little slow。。。however the last half picked up the pace and made the first half worth enduring。 Overall, a good story that I am glad I stuck with。

The writing style is unusual。 I struggled to stick with this story and didn’t enjoy much of the first half of the book。 Part 2 is much better。 Would not recommend。 I have read better WW2 historical fiction stories。

The best book I’ve read in a long time。 So well thought out and smart。 My first thought when I opened it was “Yikes- another WWII novel 🥴”。 But this was legit。
