Summary

Since its debut in 1990, The Wheel of Time(R) by Robert Jordan has captivated millions of readers around the globe with its scope, originality, and compelling characters。

The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend。 Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again。 In the Third Age, an Age of Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance。 What was, what will be, and what is, may yet fall under the Shadow。

For three days battle has raged in the snow around the great city of Tar Valon。 In the city, a Foretelling of the future is uttered。 On the slopes of Dragonmount, the immense mountain that looms over the city, is born an infant prophesied to change the world。 That child must be found before the forces of the Shadow have an opportunity to kill him。

Moiraine Damodred, a young Accepted soon to be raised to Aes Sedai, and Lan Mandragoran, a soldier fighting in the battle, are set on paths that will bind their lives together。 But those paths are filled with complications and dangers, for Moiraine, of the Royal House of Cairhien, whose king has just died, and Lan, considered the uncrowned king of a nation long dead, find their lives threatened by the plots of those seeking power。

New Spring begins Moiraine and Lan's quest to find the Dragon Reborn that will lead to the events of The Eye of the World。。。and their fateful meeting with Rand al'Thor。 New Spring is a perfect jumping-on point for fantasy readers wanting to know more about The Wheel of Time and the forthcoming TV show。

A solid prequel to the epic that is to come。 I did find it a little confusing (it's been a very long time since I read the Wheel of Time) so although I've kicked off my reread of the whole series with this one, I don't think it's a good one to start with if you're completely unfamiliar with the story / world。 A solid prequel to the epic that is to come。 I did find it a little confusing (it's been a very long time since I read the Wheel of Time) so although I've kicked off my reread of the whole series with this one, I don't think it's a good one to start with if you're completely unfamiliar with the story / world。 。。。more

Backstories for Moraine, Siuan, and Lan。 Definitely worth a read if you enjoy WoT。

I’m glad I left this for the end。 It was a nice way to have a soft landing for the end of the Wheel of Time。 I don’t feel like this book is essential。 There are some cool tidbits you find out, but it’s not super impactful。 Just a fun light read set in the WoT world with some familiar characters。

Mike

This is a prequel and will explain where some of the characters in the series come from。

Jeff J。

Prequel to The Wheel of Time series providing needed background on Moiraine。

I kind of did not need this book。 😕I did not want to know how Moiraine used to be as an Accepted。 😅It felt like getting older and discovering that your parents and teachers are just struggling adults like the rest of us, not these all-knowing mentors we all saw them as。 🧐But, now I can officially state that I have read all of the Wheel of Time books! 🤩I would recommend this if you are the biggest Moiraine fan。 💙

Not the best book in the Wheel of Time series, but it was fun to revisit that world。

Honestly, I have like at least three more "complicated feelings" reviews in the queue to write。I was really looking forward to this book to get a little bit of a Moiraine "fix" since she is absent from the WoT books I am currently reading。 I didn't realize that "young Moiraine" was going to suffer from all the annoying characteristics Robert Jordan infuses his other young female characters with。 Heck, one of the reasons I was SO drawn to Moiraine in the original series was because she seemed so far above all the childishness and pettiness and just general annoyingness that seems to plague the other WoT women。 Perhaps part of that is because she is older and wiser than in this book, or perhaps that's because we don't really see the books through her perspective so she retains a certain air of mystery。 Whatever it is, the Moiraine in this book is not nearly as compelling as the Moiraine in later books, at least not until the last quarter or so。That's not to say she is not compelling at all。 It's just that I felt a lot less like I was reading about Moiraine and more like I was reading about Egwene or Nynaeve or any other young-ish Aes Sedai。 It seems like RJ has character "types" for his female characters and male characters, and he divides up his large cast into these types, and the "strong female" (who is actually petty and self-centered), is the "type" that catches up almost all his young women。 I'm starting to make peace with this continuous barb in the side while reading RJ by just accepting that no writer can be good at everything。 RJ's worldbuilding is amazing, no doubt about it。 His writing is mediocre。 His characters are mediocre。 His characters would be all right if the cast were smaller, but with such a large cast, he's just not a good enough character writer to have enough personality to go around。 And that's something I just need to accept if I'm going to keep reading him。 And I will, because, you know, sunk cost fallacy, a new Amazon series about to air, pretty stunning clothing descriptions (yes, I do actually enjoy that aspect of the books!), and good conversations with my husband about the series。I realize I've said almost NOTHING about New Spring itself, except that its portrayal of Moiraine was disappointing and that poked the whole anthill of RJ disgruntlement that gets stirred with each book I read。 But now I will talk about the book itself if you've made it this far and are still interested。 First, it was super refreshing to read RJ on a somewhat smaller, more intimate scale。 I could just enjoy the story and being in this world again without the migraine-inducing task of keeping track of SO many cultures and characters and historical battles and fallen cities。 The book also focused on the part of RJ's world that is most interesting to me, which is the society of the Aes Sedai。 A lot of reviews complain that "nothing happens" in the first 2/3 of this book, and that's a valid criticism。 But it felt pretty clear to me that this book was written for those of us who really crave more insight into the workings of the White Tower and glimpses of life within its walls。 I am one of those readers, so the LONG set up was completely tolerable to me。 (Although this book is definitely not written for those new to the series, even though it's the first "chronologically" -- tons of Aes Sedai terminology is just thrown around with the assumption that readers are up to speed on what it all means。 Good thing Aes Sedai baggage is pretty much the only stuff about this series I consistently can keep track of。) I also really enjoyed the more intimate (though not gratuitous) look at Moiraine's and Siuan's early relationship, and the fact that RJ did not gloss over the depth of their feeling for one another or the sexual/romantic undertones。 He wasn't afraid of "losing" readers over some of his principle characters being bi and didn't take the J。K。 Rowling coward's way out of revealing a minority sexual orientation only AFTER all the books had been written and sold。 So, thanks for that representation, RJ。Once the "plot" portion of the book really kicks off, the story held my interest even more, and this is probably the point where those who are bored with Aes Sedai worldbuilding finally got some satisfaction。 For me, the story went from mildly enjoyable to "gotta get back to see what happens next" compelling。 Unfortunately, RJ's and Harriet Jordan's distorted view of relationships built by their time spent in the romance genre permeates Moiraine's and Lan's first encounters and Moiraine behaves in ways that are utterly despicable toward him。 Her actions were so egregious that I feared she might bond Lan against his will (an action akin to rape), but fortunately the final bonding of the two was consensual and emotionally satisfying, making way for the mutually respectful relationship we know and love from the later books。 There were some plot points that I didn't quite see coming and some excellent -- although at times heavy handed -- foreshadowing of later events in the series。 I kind of wish there was a gap book to cover how we get from the end of New Spring to the beginning of Eye of The World, but I guess I'll just have to mind fan-fic my way through that one。 。。。more

Lovely story! I am really happy to know the background story of the friendship between Moiraine and Siuan, and more importantly, Lan's story。 His meeting with Moiraine was nothing like I imagined it。Structured almost like a mystery novel, the book was captivating, with moments of tension interspersed nicely throughout。It is a shame that another prequel to the Wheel of Time was not published。 There is so much more I wanted to know! I love this book。 So fun to learn some history of Moiraine and Lan。 I wish we could have got more prequel books。

The same trouble which plagues many prequels。。。 you already know the broad strokes and so it is hard to get an interesting story out of it。

I read this between books 10 and 11 and I went into it with pretty low expectations。 Because it is a prequel, we already heard about a lot of the main plot points and it doesn't really add a lot to the main series' story。 However, I ended up really enjoying this book, mainly because of Moiraine。 She has always been one of my favorite characters in the main series and this book adds a whole other dimension to her character。 To some extent, Lan's character also benefits from this book - in the las I read this between books 10 and 11 and I went into it with pretty low expectations。 Because it is a prequel, we already heard about a lot of the main plot points and it doesn't really add a lot to the main series' story。 However, I ended up really enjoying this book, mainly because of Moiraine。 She has always been one of my favorite characters in the main series and this book adds a whole other dimension to her character。 To some extent, Lan's character also benefits from this book - in the last few books of the series I haven't enjoyed him as much as I used to, but now I really want to see where his character goes。Overall, to me this is not a "must read" if you just want to enjoy the main series, but if you like Moiraine and Lan I feel that you'll really like this book。 。。。more

I kind of can't believe that I'm almost 75% of the way finished The Wheel of Time。 Plus, I only have one more book written fully by Robert Jordan to read。 (For context, I read New Spring after Book 10)。 I was really frustrated with Crossroads of Twilight and I think New Spring was just what I needed to relieve some of that frustration and get me excited about this series again。 At this rate, I'm on track to finish just before the show drops! I read the rest of the series 10 。。。15 。。。 or more years ago and was able to blaze through them。 With all of the talk of the upcoming WoT series I wanted to get this one read。 After reading this I think I want to reread the entire series。

A prequel to Wheel of Time but best to read it after the series proper so the characters resonate。

Fun little prequel。 Adds a lot of color and context。

I wanted to reread this one before the show came out in cause stuff in here was in the first season and I couldn't remember what happened。 I know Robert Jordan said it was supposed to be ok for someone that hasn't read the other wheel of time books, but I feel this is really for fans that want to see what the Aes Sedai crew was like when they are young。 Almost every character in this book is mentioned in the main series if only briefly。 I think there was too much focus on that instead of fleshin I wanted to reread this one before the show came out in cause stuff in here was in the first season and I couldn't remember what happened。 I know Robert Jordan said it was supposed to be ok for someone that hasn't read the other wheel of time books, but I feel this is really for fans that want to see what the Aes Sedai crew was like when they are young。 Almost every character in this book is mentioned in the main series if only briefly。 I think there was too much focus on that instead of fleshing out the plot for this story。 Bottom line if you are already a fan of wheel of time and you just want some time in this world it is worth the read if you are not skip it。 。。。more

Creo que es mi libro favorito de la saga。 Mucha nostalgia, muy atrapante e interesante。 Muy bienvenido el nuevo punto de vista。

The book serves as a sort of a prelude for some of the characters {I assume} in the upcoming series。 For some reasons it filled me with flashbacks to scenes from The witcher, in particular to the tower and the mages there。 Perhaps it was meant to fill in or help substantiate some of the backgrounds for the subsequent books which were published first。

Look, I appreciate anything WOT related。 But I'm not really sure how much this added other than confirming that Siuan and Morraine were pillow friends。I'm happy I would read it and I would happily read anything of related quality, but it didn't inform the larger story enough and it didn't have enough in it to stand alone。 It's fine。 Look, I appreciate anything WOT related。 But I'm not really sure how much this added other than confirming that Siuan and Morraine were pillow friends。I'm happy I would read it and I would happily read anything of related quality, but it didn't inform the larger story enough and it didn't have enough in it to stand alone。 It's fine。 。。。more
