Summary

The outrageously funny and painfully relatable satire of an aspiring artist and millennial culture

Walter Scott’s Wendy comics have become a critical sensation, with rave reviews in The New Yorker and The Guardian, and an appearance in the Best American Comics anthology。 Learn Wendy’s origin story as Scott hilariously plumbs millennial culture, creative ennui, and the nepotism of the art world’s institutions。

Wendy’s an aspiring artist in a party city, and she’s in a rut。 She spends her time snorting mdma in gallery bathrooms and watching Nurse Jackie reruns on her laptop while hungover。 So when she’s accepted into the prestigious Flojo Island residency, Wendy vows to buckle down and get working。 But during the remote, woodsy residency, Wendy and her collaborator/bff Winona put on a performance piece that becomes the centre of an art world controversy, and so Wendy returns to Montreal, getting a job in a coffee shop to make ends meet。

With Wendy, Scott launches the Wendyverse, brimming with painfully relatable characters like the back-stabbing frenemy Tina, the name-dropping Paloma, the cool drummer Wendy obsesses over, Jeff, and of course, our treasured Wendy, the hot mess we can’t live without。 In blunt, laugh out loud funny vignettes with perfect punchlines, Scott illuminates the opacity of artspeak and the ceaseless anxieties plaguing a largely privileged generation。

Wendy is a total mess: life is not going to plan, it feels like everyone else is doing great, and to top it all off her best friend is fucking the guys she likes。Scott's art style mirrors the messiness of a mid-twenties breakdown fueled by alcohol and professional insecurity。 It's scratchy and punk and perfect for the subject at hand。 It might be the perfect comic to read when you feel like a mid-twenties mess, or the absolute worst。 I enjoyed having the chaotic, jealous, insecure aspects of bei Wendy is a total mess: life is not going to plan, it feels like everyone else is doing great, and to top it all off her best friend is fucking the guys she likes。Scott's art style mirrors the messiness of a mid-twenties breakdown fueled by alcohol and professional insecurity。 It's scratchy and punk and perfect for the subject at hand。 It might be the perfect comic to read when you feel like a mid-twenties mess, or the absolute worst。 I enjoyed having the chaotic, jealous, insecure aspects of being an aspiring art-person reflected back at me。 It's painful in places but absolutely worth the ride。Thanks to Drawn & Quarterly for a review copy of this title。 。。。more

Yet another cartoonist castigation of art school, the first in a series by (duh) former art school student Scott, whose final volume, Wendy, Master of Art, I read first。 This one feels fresher and more alive, though it is the same Wendy, who wants to be an artist but like most folks in art school spends more time doing drugs, getting drunk (and regularly vomiting, don't forget that) and cruising for boys in bars and punk concerts。 But this manages to be fun and funny and was very popular (this o Yet another cartoonist castigation of art school, the first in a series by (duh) former art school student Scott, whose final volume, Wendy, Master of Art, I read first。 This one feels fresher and more alive, though it is the same Wendy, who wants to be an artist but like most folks in art school spends more time doing drugs, getting drunk (and regularly vomiting, don't forget that) and cruising for boys in bars and punk concerts。 But this manages to be fun and funny and was very popular (this one came out in 2014 and MA came out in 2020)。 。。。more

I am a millennial who is also a former performance-artist that grew up in a big city in Canada。 I relate to Wendy's world。 Wendy's stories becomes more grounded and less vapid as she ages。 I enjoy the more grounded later volumes of the Wendy series more then this early volume。 The bones of an excellent series with grounded satirical honest characters is present in these pages。 I'm happy this book exists。 I am a millennial who is also a former performance-artist that grew up in a big city in Canada。 I relate to Wendy's world。 Wendy's stories becomes more grounded and less vapid as she ages。 I enjoy the more grounded later volumes of the Wendy series more then this early volume。 The bones of an excellent series with grounded satirical honest characters is present in these pages。 I'm happy this book exists。 。。。more

If you have lived in Montreal, you have been Wendy, or known someone like her。 The trippy, messy style of drawing perfectly the subject matter。

Will forever be my fave! Most embarrassingly relatable material I had ever read when I was a young broke artist who partied too much, making many mistakes on the pursuit of being "cool" and accepted。 Felt like looking in a mirror, and I can laugh at myself retrospectively by re-reading Wendy。 Will forever be my fave! From the highs of potential opportunity to the lows of drunken humiliation we follow Wendy in her quest for art recognition。 The simple art in this graphic novel really worked for me, scenes in Montreal felt familiar。 I think Walter Scott captured some of the emptiness of party girl antics and the feelings of regret and self aggrandizement rang true。 I definitely want to know where Wendy is headed next!

Extremely relatable! I read this in like five minutes and then ran to the library to get the sequel!

This comic/graphic novel is a knives-out satire with heart about artsy Canadian millennials struggling to make sense of their lives。 Nothing groundbreaking in that it's about young, creative people who party and hook-up and have emotional ups and downs every day and want to be Artists, but this is quick and clever and provided some LOLs。 I enjoyed the dialogue and artwork。 This comic/graphic novel is a knives-out satire with heart about artsy Canadian millennials struggling to make sense of their lives。 Nothing groundbreaking in that it's about young, creative people who party and hook-up and have emotional ups and downs every day and want to be Artists, but this is quick and clever and provided some LOLs。 I enjoyed the dialogue and artwork。 。。。more

At times laugh out loud hilarious and at others a surprisingly tender and sad look at an artists life。 While seeming to come from a point of mocking the contemporary art world it actually plays almost more realistic than anything before。 I found this highly original and a completely engrossing read from start to finish。

I was really, really excited for this Persepolis reminiscent (the art definitely not the story) graphic novel to make me laugh and perhaps even cry, but this story was not profound in any way。 Maybe the sheer fact that I was expecting some abstract value from Wendy's alcohol, sex, drugs, cynicism ridden story says enough about me being the exact target audience。 Oh well。 Ya, wtv。 I was really, really excited for this Persepolis reminiscent (the art definitely not the story) graphic novel to make me laugh and perhaps even cry, but this story was not profound in any way。 Maybe the sheer fact that I was expecting some abstract value from Wendy's alcohol, sex, drugs, cynicism ridden story says enough about me being the exact target audience。 Oh well。 Ya, wtv。 。。。more

I loved this comic。 As someone who lives in a city with a prestigious art school, I can say that I recognize Wendy。 I was super shocked that a male author got this character so right。 The variations that happen frame by frame to show the characters getting drunk, feeling like there acting a fool, or being catty to their peers is impeccable。 It's so great I wanna rip it off and write my own comic。 I loved this comic。 As someone who lives in a city with a prestigious art school, I can say that I recognize Wendy。 I was super shocked that a male author got this character so right。 The variations that happen frame by frame to show the characters getting drunk, feeling like there acting a fool, or being catty to their peers is impeccable。 It's so great I wanna rip it off and write my own comic。 。。。more

This straight-up roast of the art scene in Montreal is one of the funniest comics I’ve ever read。 Wendy is a total hot-mess, but I still found myself rooting for her (somehow)。 She has an optimistic outlook paired with a tendency to over-indulge in self-destructive behaviour。 She has grandiose ambitions, but very little focus or perseverance。 She is surrounded by toxic people (aside from Winona!), but she can’t stand being alone。 This all sounds depressing when I think about it, but Scott’s illu This straight-up roast of the art scene in Montreal is one of the funniest comics I’ve ever read。 Wendy is a total hot-mess, but I still found myself rooting for her (somehow)。 She has an optimistic outlook paired with a tendency to over-indulge in self-destructive behaviour。 She has grandiose ambitions, but very little focus or perseverance。 She is surrounded by toxic people (aside from Winona!), but she can’t stand being alone。 This all sounds depressing when I think about it, but Scott’s illustration choices, such as bizarre facial expressions and extreme shifts in emotion, add so much hilarity to the story。 。。。more

You could absolutely hate, love, feel empathetic or disgusted with Wendy in a short span of time。 The character evokes strong emotions。It is easy to feel repulsed but it takes a bit to gloss over the cacophony of Wendy's life which appears to be a crude cocktail of sexual desires, low self esteem, and intoxication and see the girl she is。 The artwork is absolutely wacky and the language is 。。。 well something only a basic bitch like Wendy would talk。 You could absolutely hate, love, feel empathetic or disgusted with Wendy in a short span of time。 The character evokes strong emotions。It is easy to feel repulsed but it takes a bit to gloss over the cacophony of Wendy's life which appears to be a crude cocktail of sexual desires, low self esteem, and intoxication and see the girl she is。 The artwork is absolutely wacky and the language is 。。。 well something only a basic bitch like Wendy would talk。 。。。more

I was recently in Toronto and inquired after a local indie comic book that "captures the spirit of Toronto"。 I was given Wendy。Oh, Wendy。 What can I say about you? You embody the hopes and dreams of a generation, but you also have all its flaws in spades。 An aspiring artist who's not very much into doing the work of creating art and gets a little too drunk。 Every night。 It's rare to meet a character who is both repulsive and endearing。 Wendy balances that tightrope。 Thank you, random comic book I was recently in Toronto and inquired after a local indie comic book that "captures the spirit of Toronto"。 I was given Wendy。Oh, Wendy。 What can I say about you?
