Summary

The creators of Pick a Pine Tree are back with a joyful, energetic celebration of a Halloween tradition。

Pick a pumpkin from the patch。 Tall and lean or short and fat。 Vivid orange, ghostly white, or speckled green, might be just right。

Pairing a wonderfully rhythmic read-aloud text with expressive retro illustrations, author Patricia Toht and illustrator Jarvis capture all the excitement and familial feeling of a favorite holiday tradition。 Readers will be happy to follow along with each step, from picking out the perfect specimen at the pumpkin patch (be sure to stop for cider and toffee apples) to carting it home, scooping out the insides, carving a scary face, and finally lighting a candle inside -- savoring the familiar ritual of transforming an ordinary pumpkin into a one-of-a-kind glowing jack-o'-lantern。

I bought this book for the illustrations and they are amazing。 Oh the art I hope we can produce using this book as an example。 The story was a basic story about pumpkin picking and carving。 What makes this 4 stars are the illustrations。

Andrea

Beautiful illustrations, light and easy to read text with simple rhymes。 Shows a family doing all the activities that are fun to get ready for Halloween - picking out a pumpkin, carving it, scooping it, getting into costume - and doesn't focus on the candy or trick or treating。 Diverse cast, too。 Very fun! Trying to read seasonal books and this one is definitely worth the read! Awesome illustrations and correlation between the routines and activities we participate in throughout Halloween。 This book could be used daily for October and have discussions build upon it as well as art work related to the book。 The rhyming words in this book capture the reader's attention。 I particularly love the ending of this book as it is open ended for children to drop in their ideas and thoughts before it ends with Trying to read seasonal books and this one is definitely worth the read! 4 stars for story but illustrations bump this to a 5 in my eyes。 This is one of those books I’d buy just to stand on a shelf and look at because the illustrations are just perfectly my taste。 The story is rhyming description of the transformation from pumpkin to jack o lantern, with all of the steps described in perfect detail。 A great seasonal read for young children who are still establishing traditions and seasonal associations。

I found this enjoyable if nothing particularly exciting。 If you've read a lot of Halloweeny picture books you won't find much new here in terms of the story although I very much appreciate and applaud the diversity portrayed in the illustrations, including a mixed-race family as our protagonists。 I found this enjoyable if nothing particularly exciting。 If you've read a lot of Halloweeny picture books you won't find much new here in terms of the story although I very much appreciate and applaud the diversity portrayed in the illustrations, including a mixed-race family as our protagonists。 。。。more

A great halloween book about picking a pumpkin, carving it, etc。 Would be fun to have kids act out different faces that you can carve on your pumpkin。 The illustrations are very atmospheric--I quite like them! I rated this book with 5 stars just due to the illustrations alone。 They are gorgeous and they build and get better as the stories go on 。 I think Halloween and fall in general can lend it self to some not so great children stories, but this one is packed with poetry and beautiful vocabulary。 It is geared to K-3, but I think could also be used for pre-k。 I would use it for vocabulary purposes or as part of a poetry unit。 I think the vocabulary is enhanced throughout the story but not intimidatin I rated this book with 5 stars just due to the illustrations alone。 They are gorgeous and they build and get better as the stories go on 。 I think Halloween and fall in general can lend it self to some not so great children stories, but this one is packed with poetry and beautiful vocabulary。 It is geared to K-3, but I think could also be used for pre-k。 I would use it for vocabulary purposes or as part of a poetry unit。 I think the vocabulary is enhanced throughout the story but not intimidating to a group of second grade students。 This would make a great mentor text for students to write their own poetry。 With lines like “brush or wipe your pumpkin clean。 Rub it smooth and make it gleam。 Find the perfect carving space, lined with papers just in case”。 This is a 2019 book and may not be one you have in your library。 You must add to it, it is so visually stunning。 。。。more
