Summary

The Three-Body Problem is the first chance for English-speaking readers to experience the Hugo Award-winning phenomenon from China's most beloved science fiction author, Liu Cixin。

Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens。 An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth。 Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion。 The result is a science fiction masterpiece of enormous scope and vision。

What an imaginative book!!Science fiction is a genre I haven't read as much as I would have liked。 Much of the criticism about this book is regarding the translation。 I believe that it is impossible to recreate the magic while translating and having this thought at the back of my mind made me overlook that part。 I do feel that the book slacked a little towards the end。 But all in all, I really enjoyed the story。Also, I found the character of Da Shi to be my favourite of the lot。 What an imaginative book!!Science fiction is a genre I haven't read as much as I would have liked。 Much of the criticism about this book is regarding the translation。 I believe that it is impossible to recreate the magic while translating and having this thought at the back of my mind made me overlook that part。 I do feel that the book slacked a little towards the end。 But all in all, I really enjoyed the story。Also, I found the character of Da Shi to be my favourite of the lot。 。。。more

That’s when the book really lost me。 Not reading anymore! 。。。more

Didn't even finish it。 Again, probably a failing on my part, but these books that are so obscure in their plot are not for me。 I can only go so long wondering "where this is going" or "what is really happening" before I lose interest。 I love twists as much as the next guy, but how do you twist something that is already a knotted mess?

I don't know how to review this piece of genius XDThe Three-Body Problem is full of physics references and explanations, there's a fair bit of info-dumping due to time skips, and still I put this on my Forever Shelf。 I was in love with every word, even the heavy physics stuff。。。 and I failed Physics pretty badly at school。The philosophy and what-if's posed by this book are mind-blowing。 The heavy physics and info-dumping aside, it's everything I want in a sci-fi book。 The sequels are already on I don't know how to review this piece of genius XDThe Three-Body Problem is full of physics references and explanations, there's a fair bit of info-dumping due to time skips, and still I put this on my Forever Shelf。 I was in love with every word, even the heavy physics stuff。。。 and I failed Physics pretty badly at school。The philosophy and what-if's posed by this book are mind-blowing。 The heavy physics and info-dumping aside, it's everything I want in a sci-fi book。 The sequels are already on my next-to-buy list, and I can't wait to read more! First contact book combo’d with cultural revolution China。 Rather bonkers perspective looking at people’s motives in first contact。Interesting at times, but can go on science monologues that can lose you really easily and kinda drag it down for me。

Fascinating。 Couldn’t put it down。 Need to read it a second time to read all the footnotes。 Sad that I did not read this a long time ago。

Interesting from a few physical science perspectives and also for the glimpse into Chinese culture from the mid 20th century onwards。 But the characters seemed to walk through the plot in stereotypical fashions in order to just advance the plot。 I found it hard to empathize with any of the characters - I don't know why。。。 its hard to put my finger on it。 Interesting from a few physical science perspectives and also for the glimpse into Chinese culture from the mid 20th century onwards。 But the characters seemed to walk through the plot in stereotypical fashions in order to just advance the plot。 I found it hard to empathize with any of the characters - I don't know why。。。 its hard to put my finger on it。 。。。more

Que fascinante poder leer ciencia de ésta forma。 Me encanta cuando el autor dice que la ciencia tiene historias increíbles congeladas en ecuaciones。 100% recomendado

What a great book。 So Fking creative。 No spoilers。 Some of the chapters just flow so well。 When I read "Newton, Von Neumann 。。。" I just started laughing - I knew how that chapter was going to end。 Liu Cixin is insanely scientifically literate, I have a B。S。 in math with most of my classes being in non-linear dynamics and chaos theory。 I suspect that the author knows more than I do。 Also, whoa the characters are great。 The way more and more gets reveled as you go is awesome and incredibly well pa What a great book。 So Fking creative。 No spoilers。 Some of the chapters just flow so well。 When I read "Newton, Von Neumann 。。。" I just started laughing - I knew how that chapter was going to end。 Liu Cixin is insanely scientifically literate, I have a B。S。 in math with most of my classes being in non-linear dynamics and chaos theory。 I suspect that the author knows more than I do。 Also, whoa the characters are great。 The way more and more gets reveled as you go is awesome and incredibly well paced。 I've got to read the other two now。 Some amazing quotes, "Should could no longer feel grief。 She was now like a Geiger counter that had been subjected to too much radiation, no longer capable of giving any reaction, noiselessly displaying a reading of zero。"“I’m a simple man without a lot of complicated twists and turns。 Look down my throat and you can see out my ass。” 。。。more

Excellent read and really imaginative。 I loved this version of the "contact" story and the way it brought out partisans of all kinds。 It was also really fascinating to read Chinese science fiction and see a story set against recent Chinese history that I was embarrassingly unaware of。 Excellent read and really imaginative。 I loved this version of the "contact" story and the way it brought out partisans of all kinds。 It was also really fascinating to read Chinese science fiction and see a story set against recent Chinese history that I was embarrassingly unaware of。 。。。more

Riveting page-turner。 One thought is that there is lots of ‘relativistic’ time-stretching and warping going on in the plot and the writing。

My feelings on this are mixed。 The ideas and concepts of this novel are very interesting。 That said the novel frequently defaults to long explanations of the concepts with no character or plot development。 The video game sections were brutal to get through they were so boring in parts。 Almost across the board, these characters are limp and lifeless。 A few have a good foundation, but they are simply not the focus of this book。 There are factions in this book that have different reactions to the d My feelings on this are mixed。 The ideas and concepts of this novel are very interesting。 That said the novel frequently defaults to long explanations of the concepts with no character or plot development。 The video game sections were brutal to get through they were so boring in parts。 Almost across the board, these characters are limp and lifeless。 A few have a good foundation, but they are simply not the focus of this book。 There are factions in this book that have different reactions to the discovered alien species。 Those factions are described, but we are given no characters through which to understand the motives of any of them。 Often The Three-Body Problem feels like a textbook, giving me interesting ideas, but nothing of substance as a work of fiction。 I don't know to what degree my issues with it are due to cultural or translation issues, but I intend to read the second book in the trilogy and see if it holds my attention。 。。。more

Absolutely sensational book。 I just hope parts 2 and 3 are just as good! Starting part 2 tonight。。。 The concepts, ideas, the questions。。。。 Really makes you think and sometimes quite uncomfortably。The writing and prose may not be the best, probably because it is translated and loses some of the flow , but that doesn't detract from the spectacular intellectual journey this book is and I would highly recommend it to anyone who thinks about the big questions even if they are not sci fi fans Absolutely sensational book。 I just hope parts 2 and 3 are just as good! uno dei libri più belli che abbia mai letto。 per me la fantascienza deve aspirare a essere questo。 c'è un terrore di fondo che istintivamente assimilerei a Lovecraft ma soprattutto tanta fisica, tanti concetti reali, tanta chiarezza, tanta umanità。 un libro eccezionale, sono felicissimo di averlo letto uno dei libri più belli che abbia mai letto。 per me la fantascienza deve aspirare a essere questo。 c'è un terrore di fondo che istintivamente assimilerei a Lovecraft ma soprattutto tanta fisica, tanti concetti reali, tanta chiarezza, tanta umanità。 un libro eccezionale, sono felicissimo di averlo letto 。。。more

Something has been lost in translation but not so much that the book will seem devoid of soul。 The physics is fantastic, art merges with equation and endless possibilities emerge。 The author does not put Eastern philosophy on a pedestal despite being Eastern himself。 Nor does he seem to recommend blind worship of science。 The book is a page turner, there is an awful lot of unanswerable questions, nanomaterial James Bond weapons, sudden possibilities of singularity devouring the known worlds etc。 Something has been lost in translation but not so much that the book will seem devoid of soul。 The physics is fantastic, art merges with equation and endless possibilities emerge。 The author does not put Eastern philosophy on a pedestal despite being Eastern himself。 Nor does he seem to recommend blind worship of science。 The book is a page turner, there is an awful lot of unanswerable questions, nanomaterial James Bond weapons, sudden possibilities of singularity devouring the known worlds etc。 Philosophical physics messes with your brain。 Makes you wonder what it would be like if designer was indeed intelligent? 。。。more

Great mystery at the heart of this book that feels somewhat let down by its reveal which takes place tediously over the last quarter of the book。

The most beautiful stories in the history of humanity were not written by travelling bards and poets, but by science, according to the author。 He explains how no myth making religious or folk story can hold a candle to the glory of the big bang。 The many comparisons he makes with such superlative degrees struck me as odd and stupid。 No need to point a middle finger at Shakespeare or the Bible to prove a point, but one might ask how it is then that he comes up with this steaming pile of shit? The characters and story telling are paper thin。 The dialogues are supremely unnatural。 His hero also casually just kills people。 But the reader only gets to know these things on a factual basis。 It does not bear any meaning on the level of human experience。 The author is not concerned with the human condition, he only cares about abstract relations and how science can play a role on a grand scale。 Humanity is an abstraction。 The book presents an autistic vision on life and suffers from sweeping overconfidence inherent to ones own limitations。 His statement is proof of that。 But I was excited were the story was going。 I was very intrigued with the game, the three body problem, and how everyone was involved。 I fell into the trap of wanting to know what was going on。 And there it was, he simply tells us in -yes how convenient- the final chapter。 Luckily he put the afterword in the final pages。 He says that we should be suspicious about aliens and turn our friendliness not to them but to each other。 Humans should be nicer to each other。 I died。 Get this。 This 12-year old “world peace” speech is coming from the same author who is parroting government propaganda that putting people in concentration camps is a good thing。 。。。more

I really wanted to love this book。 The premise of an eventual alien invasion, set off from events from China's cultural revolution and from Eastern mindsets made an interesting premise。 The characters were all rather flat, and the science often went over my head, making parts tedious to read。 I did overall enjoy the story's concept。 I intend to read the next book, in hopes that some unanswered questions will be further explained。 I really wanted to love this book。 The premise of an eventual alien invasion, set off from events from China's cultural revolution and from Eastern mindsets made an interesting premise。 The characters were all rather flat, and the science often went over my head, making parts tedious to read。 I did overall enjoy the story's concept。 I intend to read the next book, in hopes that some unanswered questions will be further explained。 。。。more
