Summary

Frankly, very disappointing。 Everything was references and derivative in a way that struck me as hacky and pandering, not fun and nostalgic。 I see this as a great comic or limited series, but once again I’m not seeing Cline as writing for novels but writing for other mediums which just feels misaligned。

Cool concept, fell short at the end: too movie-like logic

Un libro ligero y entretenido。 Bueno para pasar el rato。 Lamentablemente, un poco flojo el final, muy expositivo, sin suficiente construcción previa y lleno de lugares comunes。

i read endless bad reviews of this book, but honestly i really enjoyed it。 the ending was a bit rushed i felt however i really enjoyed how Ernest finished the book。 i also was surprised i read the book & enjoyed it since RPO was so hard for me to read - struggled to read past 50 pages and even those 50 were a struggle。 i highly recommend if you aren't a huge geek as i couldn't see the different things people were comparing Armada to :) i read endless bad reviews of this book, but honestly i really enjoyed it。 the ending was a bit rushed i felt however i really enjoyed how Ernest finished the book。 i also was surprised i read the book & enjoyed it since RPO was so hard for me to read - struggled to read past 50 pages and even those 50 were a struggle。 i highly recommend if you aren't a huge geek as i couldn't see the different things people were comparing Armada to :) 。。。more

When my son gifted me with several of the works of Ernest Cline for Christmas last year, I was definitely pleased and interested。 After all, I had seen the movie based on Cline’s bestseller, Ready Player One, twice, so I was curious about the story behind the story。I chose to start with his lesser-known novel, Armada, and was quickly captivated。 The basic plot is that of a high school senior, Zach Lightman, who thinks he’s losing his mind because he just happened to see an alien fighter straight When my son gifted me with several of the works of Ernest Cline for Christmas last year, I was definitely pleased and interested。 After all, I had seen the movie based on Cline’s bestseller, Ready Player One, twice, so I was curious about the story behind the story。I chose to start with his lesser-known novel, Armada, and was quickly captivated。 The basic plot is that of a high school senior, Zach Lightman, who thinks he’s losing his mind because he just happened to see an alien fighter straight out of his favorite videogame flying outside the window of his classroom。However, from this amusing but inauspicious beginning is a story that combines a coming of age with a classic science fiction/adventure and a sprinkling of romance。 Zach discovers quickly that he is not crazy, his boss at Starbase Ace, a videogame store, is actually a field agent for the “fictional” Earth Defense Alliance, also from the game, and here’s the big one, (spoilers!) video games are training tools developed by world governments to prepare citizens to fight against real aliens。I was quickly reminded of both Tron and Ender’s Game, as true to nature Cline peppers his text with pop cultural references, though this particular book limits those somewhat to science fiction movies and video games, and classic seventies music, more so than in his other works。As Zach swiftly finds himself recruited to serve in the EDA due to his record high scores on the game boards, he learns of government cover-ups, conspiracies, and even the mystery of his father’s death when Zach was just a baby。 He will have to decide for himself just who is right and who is of the wrong opinion, and to what extent he’s willing to go to prove his father’s theories。 The fate of the whole world literally hangs in the balance。I enjoyed the bulk of this book very much。 The pacing was good, the action drove the story but there was plenty of bi-play between the various characters to help further the plot。 The story only really faltered for me near the end; I thought the resolution contained too much of a science fiction cliché。 I think such a good story deserved a more original ending。 Still, overall, I think this novel deserves four stars for creativity and humor, as well as all those references that are like a trivia goldmine to science fiction fans。 。。。more

Armada was not good。 The characters were terrible。 The plot was terrible。 The writing was mediocre to terrible。 I hate finished Armada because the book had been on my shelf for 4+ years and I refused to just give up on it。 Now I'm just mad at myself。 Armada was not good。 The characters were terrible。 The plot was terrible。 The writing was mediocre to terrible。 I hate finished Armada because the book had been on my shelf for 4+ years and I refused to just give up on it。 Now I'm just mad at myself。 。。。more

3。5。 I went into this originally thinking that this was Cline’s first novel, before he wrote Ready Player One。 I later found out that it is not, and, honestly, the way it’s written, it feels like it should have been。 Like Ready Player One I love all of the pop culture references used all throughout this book, but, to be real, this narrative read like a bit of a fan fic for me。 On top of that, the third act is so freakin’ rushed that I found myself shocked when I hit the epilogue chapter, not rea 3。5。 I went into this originally thinking that this was Cline’s first novel, before he wrote Ready Player One。 I later found out that it is not, and, honestly, the way it’s written, it feels like it should have been。 Like Ready Player One I love all of the pop culture references used all throughout this book, but, to be real, this narrative read like a bit of a fan fic for me。 On top of that, the third act is so freakin’ rushed that I found myself shocked when I hit the epilogue chapter, not realizing that I’d actually reached the end。 If this was indeed his first outing, I’d say not bad, but since it’s not, I won’t lie, I expected a bit more out of this。 An enjoyable enough Sci-Fi read that I’m glad I picked up, but not my favorite。 。。。more

This book was sooooo boring! I don’t care about any of the characters or anything that happened。 Cline hit a gold mine with what super reviewer KEMPER called 80s nostalgia porn。 As I spent my teenage years in the 80s I totally got off on it with Ready Player One。 But, either I was so desperate for that type of thing or it was written more for the target audience。 So with this book I felt like either…the trick only worked once or it was written more for the teenager I was in the 80s。 A reboot of This book was sooooo boring! Probably not so much。 Anyhow。 You should read Kempers review。 It’s pretty spot on。 He mentions that Cline is the guy that got your attention and got you to crack up at some comment he made once so he keeps trying for the same reaction from modified versions of the original joke/comment。 Made the dude rich and famous just from one book though! He hit gold there。 I feel like the mine is empty now though。 Rumor has it that Ready Player 2 is pretty bad too。 This。 Ok took forever to read。 So easy to put down。 It will be awhile before I risk Ready Player 2 。。。more

This book reads like Cline's rough draft for Ready Player One。 On its own, this book is an interesting, engaging, and humorous testament to nerd culture now that everyone who lived in their hometown's comic book or video game shop has grown up to adulthood。 That being said, everything this book does well, Ready Player One does better。 If there was an option to unpublish books after they've been written better, this one should be first in line。I'm not sure if reading this before RPO would have ma This book reads like Cline's rough draft for Ready Player One。 On its own, this book is an interesting, engaging, and humorous testament to nerd culture now that everyone who lived in their hometown's comic book or video game shop has grown up to adulthood。 That being said, everything this book does well, Ready Player One does better。 If there was an option to unpublish books after they've been written better, this one should be first in line。I'm not sure if reading this before RPO would have made either book better or worse, but honestly, there were many moments where I felt uninvested in the characters and the whole idea of the book seemed difficult to believe and almost ridiculous。The more I read Cline, the more I feel like he is a one-trick pony that is capable of making their trick more interesting and diversified as they go, but still, I may diverge from Olympian athletes when I say that a backflip can only be done so many different ways。One and a half thumbs down。 。。。more

I just love the Wil Wheaton & Ernest Cline combination for the audiobook, and I'm so glad it went beyond the Ready Player 1&2。 Admiral Vance also sounded very much like Buzz Lightyear and it added to the greatest of the audiobook。 I'm glad I own it now to be able to listen to it in the future! A teenage boy's fantasy。 Nerdy high schooler gets the girl and saves the world。 Got lost in all the '80s references。 I like some video game Easter eggs, but seeing "The cake is a lie" out of the blue with no context isn't as rewarding as the author thinks。 Not a lot of original ideas here, but it was a fun beach read。 Hopefully Ready Player One is better。 Stay tuned。 A teenage boy's fantasy。 Nerdy high schooler gets the girl and saves the world。 Got lost in all the '80s references。 I like some video game Easter eggs, but seeing "The cake is a lie" out of the blue with no context isn't as rewarding as the author thinks。 Not a lot of original ideas here, but it was a fun beach read。 Hopefully Ready Player One is better。 Stay tuned。 。。。more

It has a lot of references, but the story even for a cheap fantasy,sci-fi teen drama is。。。a bit much for me personally。 It is enjoyable with some parts, but it feels so rushed especially when i say。。。the whole story took part in at minimum 48 hours。。。yes。。。the story progressed so much within two days。。。and the first day i'll spoil was just a school day。Tho the audio book i had one, was read by wil wheaton so that was delightful It has a lot of references, but the story even for a cheap fantasy,sci-fi teen drama is。。。a bit much for me personally。 It is enjoyable with some parts, but it feels so rushed especially when i say。。。the whole story took part in at minimum 48 hours。。。yes。。。the story progressed so much within two days。。。and the first day i'll spoil was just a school day。Tho the audio book i had one, was read by wil wheaton so that was delightful 。。。more

I listened Ready Player One and Ready Play Two before getting to this one。 Wil Wheaton is the narrator for all three of the audio books and he does a wonderful job。 I read and/or Science Fiction in the past year。 Part of this is joining a couple book clubs and then discovering some on my own。

Good but not great!Decent story, well written and moves along at a nice pace。 However, if you have read the superior Ready Player One, there are too many similarities with that book - the 80s film and music references, the stereotypical teenage attitudes and such。 Still, a decent read。

It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that was hard to put down。 This book isn’t exceptionally well written or anything but it was an awesome ride for this 80s era science fiction and music and old-school games nerd。 It really reminded me of stranger things— fighting evil (possibly man-made?) monsters, protecting the world against their threat, a random plethora of 80s gaming and pop-culture references, a group of friends banding together to break into the heart of a hidden conspiracy。 It was It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that was hard to put down。 This book isn’t exceptionally well written or anything but it was an awesome ride for this 80s era science fiction and music and old-school games nerd。 It really reminded me of stranger things— fighting evil (possibly man-made?) monsters, protecting the world against their threat, a random plethora of 80s gaming and pop-culture references, a group of friends banding together to break into the heart of a hidden conspiracy。 It was crazy fun and I didn’t expect to, but I enjoyed this a lot more than ready player 1。 Makes me wanna blast some 80s music while playing old school console video games now。 。。。more
