Summary

A Time Best YA Book of All Time (2021)

Two teens must learn the “art of killing” in this Printz Honor–winning book, the first in a chilling new series from Neal Shusterman, author of the New York Times bestselling Unwind dystology。

A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery: humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death。 Now Scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control。

Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants。 These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own。

Scythe is the first novel of a thrilling new series by National Book Award–winning author Neal Shusterman in which Citra and Rowan learn that a perfect world comes only with a heavy price。

I really liked this! The audiobook especially was well done。 I like how you could tell the difference between who was speaking, but the voices weren’t obnoxious or cheesy。 The story was interesting as well and I’ve already purchased the audiobook for the second book。 I think the whole cloud/thunderhead thing was kind of corny and the romance was a little meh to me, but the story mostly focuses on the scythehood and that’s interesting to me。 I especially like the whole character turning to darkne I really liked this! I feel like the connection between Rowan and Citra isn’t really as strong as the book wants us to see it, they don’t seem to bond that much while they’re training together and then spend a lot of time apart only to save each other’s lives and say “I love you” at the end。 I’m all for it and their relationship it just does seem like a bit of a stretch。 A little like Katniss and Peeta in their early days。

Scythe is a dystopian novel that's NOT dystopian。 It has all of the unsettling prosperity at the expense of others you'd expect from a series like The Hunger Games, but it's a world where war, disease, and even death have been conquered for all。 And yet this is a world that has accepted and rationalized population control as a necessity for this "utopia。" What makes Scythe unique is how it gets readers into the heads of several characters with journals in between all the chapters。 These entries Scythe is a dystopian novel that's NOT dystopian。 It has all of the unsettling prosperity at the expense of others you'd expect from a series like The Hunger Games, but it's a world where war, disease, and even death have been conquered for all。 And yet this is a world that has accepted and rationalized population control as a necessity for this "utopia。" What makes Scythe unique is how it gets readers into the heads of several characters with journals in between all the chapters。 These entries detail philosophical, moral, and emotional ruminations that force readers to step back and think。While I found some of the time jumps a bit surprising, this is a book with a diverse and compelling cast of characters。 I love how Shusterman builds out his world and where he leaves everything by the end of the book。 I have a feeling he has much more to say than his first book suggests, so I'm eagerly looking forward to reading Thunderhead。 。。。more

This book is truly amazing。 But at some point (I think it was the middle portion of the book) it was a PAIN reading it that I considered DNFing it, but I’m so glad I didn’t! When I tell u I screamed, that was kinda hot ngl。 Citra is also amazing, she doesn’t have as big of a development as Rowan but she still grows and becomes a better version of herself, her parts in the book were interesting but I feel like it was mostly because she was always in the company of someone who elevated her i。e Rowan or Curie, although I do have to say the part with her 3rd test really had me going crazy and it showed her character perfectly; she knows her responsibilities and the sacrifices she has to make but it rips her apart and makes her humanity and compassion shine through。 Also, scythe Anastasia? Call me biased cuz i love Russian history but her choosing that name and her reasoning was the final nail in my coffin, it was perfect。 The Scythes (curie, faraday, Goddard) worked great as guides and made the story all the more fast paced to me; I love how human Curie and Faraday are in slightly different ways and how morally grey Goddard was, honestly I hated him so bad but I couldn’t help agreeing with some of the things he said。 Another Scythe worth mentioning is Volta, he may have been used to move Rowan’s plot forward but he was well fleshed out and I was devastated when he passed。Now i gave it 4 stars, cuz there are things that could’ve been better。 The book, while able to stand on its own perfectly doesn’t have much plot; ofc there’s the obvious corruption of the scythedom but when I thought the book would be a murder mystery thing w Faraday and Goddard it turned out it wasn’t, which is not inherently bad it just simplified the plot a lot for now。 The book also tends to be slow sometimes, granted this may have been because I started it in a very difficult time for me but sometimes I felt like I could only read 20 pages in one day。 Shusterman also tried to make a commentary on racism and how it’d play out in the future and while I appreciate its odd that is only brought up literally once and that’s it; with the way he set that everyone is now a mix of every race it could’ve been imo i great opportunity to showcase how this sort of issues would still prevail even 300 years from now but I guess it’s a book abt governmental corruption so wtv。 Also Scythe Rand disgusts me to no avail, it’s not negative abt the book she was just ughhhTLDR: this book is great just read it 。。。more

It was tough to rate this book because I really enjoyed it, but compared to some other 5 star books I’ve read, this one didn’t quite reach that level。 There were just a few “cheesy” (for lack of a better word) and plot hole moments。 Outside of that though, the concept was really cool, I really liked some of the things the author did with the story and there were a couple of things I thought I saw coming, but didn’t even realize how wrong I was until it happened。 It was a weird mix between a some It was tough to rate this book because I really enjoyed it, but compared to some other 5 star books I’ve read, this one didn’t quite reach that level。 There were just a few “cheesy” (for lack of a better word) and plot hole moments。 Outside of that though, the concept was really cool, I really liked some of the things the author did with the story and there were a couple of things I thought I saw coming, but didn’t even realize how wrong I was until it happened。 It was a weird mix between a somewhat predictable plot, and a really surprising plot。 I loved the scythes, their uniqueness, and a lot of the politics the story incorporates。 Overall, really enjoyable read and very easy! 。。。more

3,5⭐️I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the world-building was done surprisingly well and the writing style while relatively simple kept the rhythm of the book fairly fast paced。 The characters were not as developed as I would’ve liked, especially Rowan since he goes through the most change from beginning to end。 The relationships also felt rushed and underdeveloped。 I think I would’ve liked more downtime just to really explore the dynamic between all the characters but particularly the main duo si 3,5⭐️I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the world-building was done surprisingly well and the writing style while relatively simple kept the rhythm of the book fairly fast paced。 The characters were not as developed as I would’ve liked, especially Rowan since he goes through the most change from beginning to end。 The relationships also felt rushed and underdeveloped。 I think I would’ve liked more downtime just to really explore the dynamic between all the characters but particularly the main duo since they supposedly care about each other the most even though they are separated throughout most of the story (the time they spent together in the beginning felt very rushed since we barely got the see interactions between them actually hanging out or simply talking as friends would)。 Even though I didn’t mind the romance I feel it weighed down their already lagging connection。 All in all the actual plot was very interesting and I’m excited to read the sequel。 。。。more

I didn't expect myself to like it this much。This book was extremely long, and the first half was quite boring, but in the second half, things start to get interesting and start to make sense。 There were a lot of amazing plot twists, and i loved the characters so much。 Do i recommend it? yes (obviously)。 Would i read the sequel? absolutely。 I didn't expect myself to like it this much。This book was extremely long, and the first half was quite boring, but in the second half, things start to get interesting and start to make sense。 There were a lot of amazing plot twists, and i loved the characters so much。 Do i recommend it? yes (obviously)。 Would i read the sequel? absolutely。 。。。more

I questioned many times whether or not I thought this book was good。 Now that I've finished it, I'm still unsure about my final thoughts。 Aspects of it were fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the final chapters - they really did have me on the edge of my seat。 Will I purchase the next book in the trilogy? a very fun and emo read, full of angst and loveable characters。 this book was often getting highly philosophical, which i found perfect for me。 citra grew on me so much in the last two parts, but i still like rowan a little better。 however, the plot was getting very boring from time to time, which made me rate this 4 stars and not 5 stars。 again, i usually don't really care about the plot itself, i want to connect with the characters more。 but when it gets boring, i obviously can't enjoy it。 a very fun and emo read, full of angst and loveable characters。 this book was often getting highly philosophical, which i found perfect for me。 citra grew on me so much in the last two parts, but i still like rowan a little better。 however, the plot was getting very boring from time to time, which made me rate this 4 stars and not 5 stars。 again, i usually don't really care about the plot itself, i want to connect with the characters more。 but when it gets boring, i obviously can't enjoy it。 。。。more

I don't know why I waited so long to read this book, this was such a phenomenal read。I'm the type of person who doesn't read an entire series straight through - I like to skip between series and genres, sometimes taking months between books。 However, with Arc of a Scythe, I've already ordered the second and CANNOT wait to read it。 Shusterman writes with a brutal, thrilling pace, fitting more twists and turns into one book than most authors fit in an entire trilogy。 While the character developmen I don't know why I waited so long to read this book, this was such a phenomenal read。I'm the type of person who doesn't read an entire series straight through - I like to skip between series and genres, sometimes taking months between books。 However, with Arc of a Scythe, I've already ordered the second and CANNOT wait to read it。 Shusterman writes with a brutal, thrilling pace, fitting more twists and turns into one book than most authors fit in an entire trilogy。 While the character development and storylines are beautifully woven together, this world building in this book is what truly shines。 I've read plenty of futuristic dystopian novels, but nothing like this。 Much like his Unwind series, Shusterman creates a rich, believable, terrifying, and compelling world。 。。。more
