Summary

The war for survival of the planet Lusitania will be fought in the heart of a child named Gloriously Bright。

On Lusitania, Ender found a world where humans and pequininos and the Hive Queen could all live together; where three very different intelligent species could find common ground at last。 Or so he thought。

Lusitania also harbors the descolada, a virus that kills all humans it infects, but which the pequininos require in order to become adults。 The Starways Congress so fears the effects of the descolada, should it escape from Lusitania, that they have ordered the destruction of the entire planet, and all who live there。 The Fleet is on its way, a second xenocide seems inevitable。

Xenocide is the third novel in Orson Scott Card's The Ender Saga。

Speaker for the Dead was so good! And this one didn’t engage me as much。 The ending felt incomplete and a solution for many problems came a little too easily

Continuation of the Speaker for the Dead saga, enrichened by the Chinese colony narrative and some nice ideas about cosmic deism, but generally too bloated and boring at times。 I'm glad I've read it but I won't be reading any sequels。 Continuation of the Speaker for the Dead saga, enrichened by the Chinese colony narrative and some nice ideas about cosmic deism, but generally too bloated and boring at times。 I'm glad I've read it but I won't be reading any sequels。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I would give this three stars but after the wonderfulness that are the first two books in the series, and on multiple re-readings over the years, Xenocide remains such a big disappointment that I can’t。 Unless you’re such a huge fan that you just *have* to find out what happens, read Ender and Speaker, and skip the rest。 If you do feel compelled to keep reading through Xenocide and Children, be prepared to be very annoyed that the interesting bits are few and far between and mostly buried in poi I would give this three stars but after the wonderfulness that are the first two books in the series, and on multiple re-readings over the years, Xenocide remains such a big disappointment that I can’t。 Unless you’re such a huge fan that you just *have* to find out what happens, read Ender and Speaker, and skip the rest。 If you do feel compelled to keep reading through Xenocide and Children, be prepared to be very annoyed that the interesting bits are few and far between and mostly buried in pointless subplots, long arguments and dead-end interpersonal dramas, and problematic stereotypes。 The good stuff (mostly Jane’s transformation and the conversations between Hive Queen and Human) is for me eclipsed by the annoying “new Peter and Val” thread and the disappointment that Card doesn’t seem to know what to do with Ender as a character after Speaker。 Interestingly, I had the same experience with the later “Shadow” arc。 I very much enjoyed the first two books in the series but then felt that Card loses the thread, ad can’t seem to hold on to what makes the first two books so good。 。。。more

Even more so than the previous novel, this book was a very tedious read。 Tons of dialogue with nothing going on。 Anything from the Path was really biting。 The see done bright spots here, but overall I was just but super impressed with rid book

I just finished this and am uncertain of my feelings overall。 It was so very philosophical! Which I enjoyed overall。 I admit I was a bit shocked by the appearance of the two 'new'/"old" people in the ship when it returned to Lusitania。 I am anxious to see how this all ends in Children of the Mind, the last in the Ender's Saga series。 I just finished this and am uncertain of my feelings overall。 It was so very philosophical! This book is long and tedious at times and will leave you unsatisfied if you don’t read the next book in the series。 It is very meta and forms a lot of character development and finally resolves a pinch of the plot line at the end。Still, I thought it was worth the read。

It had to happen。 It started well and had some very interesting ideas, but the last quarter is garbage。

As another said (and I paraphrase):   this book is 80% bull$**t, and 20% moderate enjoyment。But who knows--maybe you'll enjoy the bull$**t as well。IN SHORT: A wee bit o' space travel in the first and last 5%。 In between: ethical dilemmas, and people arguing a lot。 VERDICT: 2 stars overall。 Not without some merit if you enjoy the Ender universe。 Just don't expect it to be like Ender's Game or Speaker for the Dead in any way。 Bring caffeine。 LOTS of caffeine。CHARACTER RATINGS: ~3。6 stars for the C As another said (and I paraphrase):   this book is 80% bull$**t, and 20% moderate enjoyment。But who knows--maybe you'll enjoy the bull$**t as well。IN SHORT: A wee bit o' space travel in the first and last 5%。 In between: ethical dilemmas, and people arguing a lot。 VERDICT: 2 stars overall。 Not without some merit if you enjoy the Ender universe。 Just don't expect it to be like Ender's Game or Speaker for the Dead in any way。 Bring caffeine。 LOTS of caffeine。CHARACTER RATINGS: ~3。6 stars for the Chinese characters, 2+ stars for Jane, and 0。5 to 1。3 stars for the many other characters。REVIEW: 3x longer than necessary。 Endless philosophical debates, arguing, and posturing--and very little action。 I skimmed to the slightly more interesting parts to stay awake。 Got weirdly preachy at times (Card showing his Mormon roots, I assume?)。 OCD stuff was pretty good。 Some mild humor。 Several instances of artificially expository dialogue。 Devolves into pure fantasy in the last 15%。 。。。more

Halfway through this book I was actually ready to give up。 I thought, well OSC went all out into his philosophical questioning and he completely forgot to sowe it through a well crafted story。I am happy to say that I was wrong and that the second half is much stronger than the first half。 There is a lot I would personnally would have liked to be trimmed but the world building, the hypothetical questions that OSC keep coming to are believable and completely thought out。I wouldn't want to re-read Halfway through this book I was actually ready to give up。 I thought, well OSC went all out into his philosophical questioning and he completely forgot to sowe it through a well crafted story。I am happy to say that I was wrong and that the second half is much stronger than the first half。 There is a lot I would personnally would have liked to be trimmed but the world building, the hypothetical questions that OSC keep coming to are believable and completely thought out。I wouldn't want to re-read this book as a whole but I thought that the highs were so good and so thought provoking that I can't help myself thinking that this is some of the best sci-fi world that I have personnally come upon。 。。。more

2。5-3 It took me over a month to finish this because I found it so painfully boring。 No one is more sad than I am that I didn’t love this book。 I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 and book 2 is one of my favorite books ever。 I feel like Scott Card went too deep into his philosophical debates and dressed it up as dialogue when it was really more of him just writing philosophical questions。 The story lagged, many of the characters were inconsistent and insufferable。 But the ending was intriguing so I may 2。5-3 It took me over a month to finish this because I found it so painfully boring。 No one is more sad than I am that I didn’t love this book。 I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 and book 2 is one of my favorite books ever。 I feel like Scott Card went too deep into his philosophical debates and dressed it up as dialogue when it was really more of him just writing philosophical questions。 The story lagged, many of the characters were inconsistent and insufferable。 But the ending was intriguing so I may give book 4 a try and hope the magic comes back 。。。more

This is the third time I have read this book。 I enjoyed it more this time than any other mostly because I did not have expectations that were incorrect concerning the type of story。 With this story the paths of the hive queen, piggies and descolada gets much deeper and more entwined。 And while there is clearly more to go on in the next book I felt it finished in an acceptable way and left me with a sense that some of the story was completed。

Xenocide takes you on a philosophical ride that will leave you breathless at the end。 Through many twists and turns, you’ll discover more about the worlds of Lusitania and Path。 Unlike Speaker for the Dead, the book has action pieces that will leave you on the edge of your seat。 Though at times too ambitious, Xenocide is a captivating third entry into the Ender’s Game Quartet。

It could be a great book, as were the first two volumes of the Ender saga。 Unfortunately, the chapters with Qing-Jao are unnecessarily repetitive and somewhat demeaning。 Despite this, I hope to find the fourth and final instalment to this otherwise great story。

Awesome read。 This links closely together with the 2nd book (not like the 1st and 2nd book)。 The book is both interesting sci-fi but with a lot of philosophical topics if you care to look for them。 Normally I am too dumb or lazy to pick up on this sort of stuff, but here it's well done and easy to follow。 I have a hard time guessing exactly what is going to happen in the 4th book, but I guess that's the fun part。 Awesome read。 This links closely together with the 2nd book (not like the 1st and 2nd book)。 The book is both interesting sci-fi but with a lot of philosophical topics if you care to look for them。 Normally I am too dumb or lazy to pick up on this sort of stuff, but here it's well done and easy to follow。 I have a hard time guessing exactly what is going to happen in the 4th book, but I guess that's the fun part。 。。。more

Card mentions that he originally didn't intend to make this a part of the Ender saga but after his publisher told him that he'd sold the "Ender Trilogy" in England he had the idea to adapt another book idea into this。 He also mentioned that the book was so much larger than he has intended that he split it into two and the first half is what became "Xenocide"。 I enjoyed it but knowing that "Children of the Mind" will focus more on the relationships between the people in "Xenocide" I'm looking for Card mentions that he originally didn't intend to make this a part of the Ender saga but after his publisher told him that he'd sold the "Ender Trilogy" in England he had the idea to adapt another book idea into this。 He also mentioned that the book was so much larger than he has intended that he split it into two and the first half is what became "Xenocide"。 I enjoyed it but knowing that "Children of the Mind" will focus more on the relationships between the people in "Xenocide" I'm looking forward to it much more。 。。。more

I liked it, there's interesting ideas and plot moves forward enough, yet I find myself dwelling on what I didn't like far more than what I liked。For one, Ender is barely a person in this book。 Any meaning he has comes from who he was in prior books - he barely has personality in this one, much less real character。Second, it's somewhat ambitious in how it attempts to deal with issues of ethics, morality, and religion, but all of it those issues feel scattered and incomplete at best。Additionally, I liked it, there's interesting ideas and plot moves forward enough, yet I find myself dwelling on what I didn't like far more than what I liked。For one, Ender is barely a person in this book。 Any meaning he has comes from who he was in prior books - he barely has personality in this one, much less real character。Second, it's somewhat ambitious in how it attempts to deal with issues of ethics, morality, and religion, but all of it those issues feel scattered and incomplete at best。Additionally, this has been a problem from the beginning of the series, but these books have no idea how to deal with love。 People love each other simply because the books say they do - there's nothing to actually reflect that。 Ender and Novinha's relationship continues to be the most inexplicable one for me。 Indeed, she's virtually absent in this story。 Card is much better at depicting pre-love and post-love than actual love。 And for a story that's so philosophically obsessed, it's a huge hole - what does love mean for other life forms? It's never even considered。So yeah, I liked it but find myself immensely frustrated also。 。。。more
