A note on my complete and total lack of interest in separating my appreciation for this book: this may very well be one of my favorite short work in the graphic novel medium。 Like "Mooncop，" Gauld weaves a personal yet transgressive tale about individual experience and the uncanny moment that， from one perspective， may initiate mythological narratives about the "hero。" Here， however， the focus is not on any champion， but a simple character caught up in societal complexities。 With such minimal ye A note on my complete and total lack of interest in separating my appreciation for this book: this may very well be one of my favorite short work in the graphic novel medium。 Like "Mooncop，" Gauld weaves a personal yet transgressive tale about individual experience and the uncanny moment that， from one perspective， may initiate mythological narratives about the "hero。" Here， however， the focus is not on any champion， but a simple character caught up in societal complexities。 With such minimal yet hugely impactful line-work， the same can also apply to the included narrative， Gauld transgressively flips a well-known biblical scene on its head。 Instead of an image of David being associated with any type of heroics， instead， we see a sad tragedy unfold。 If you've ever been caught up in the strange fandom that comes with Joseph Campbell's simplistic， reductionist proposals of "the hero's journey，" this brief graphic novel does much to show the fundamental flaws in some of the significant assumptions and cultural appropriation Campbell made his career out of。 If you've ever wondered about the myths and legends that have originated to a state of near-perfection from Japanese mythology， here is a fantastic example of the "nobility of failure。" Highly recommended。 。。。more
