The book, Retro Cross Stitch is filled with so many different styles patterns for one to cross-stitch for themselves。 This is something I've always loved when it comes to personalizing and adding a touch of love to an object, whether it's a pillow, article of clothing, towels, and so many other items! This book to me is something that allows one to use beautiful decorative designs, in this case, retro-style patterns, and use them to dazzle up anything they like。The best part about this book is that there are so much adorable items one can stitch inside! This is a nice hardcover book with so many creative creations that really can be endless with which is used alone, together, or just to add to different items。 I just love that the basis is revolving around the French charm, which really is what pulled me in to take a look at the book。 Additionally, I feel it has a bit more flair with the French designs being part of the retro patterns and reminds me of the fashions, food, people, and many other objects or styles that are related to the past。 Especially, like ones seen on a movie or TV shows。For example, there is a beautiful bakery shop, full of baguettes and little designs for creating croissants or even a paperboy, handing out papers。 You can find classic items like phones, typewriters, cameras, and all in their large and unique shape, not the ones we have now but those classic designs。 I almost get the feeling, well partially of Les Miserable when it comes to the time zone and also just a PBS show that relates to a historical time period。 No matter, there are just so many images that one can design over and over。Finally, the adorable stitched pattern in this book is something worth creating。 No matter if it's just one part of the design on the page or multiple, maybe even using just the food varieties, clothing, or travel, this book has plenty to enjoy and try。 I do know one thing, I just can't wait to put a few of my favorite French charms from this book on fabric。 "I have been given a free copy of Retro Cross Stitch: 500 Patterns, French Charm in exchange for my honest opinion" 。。。more

This is a big book of vintage motifs that will keep a stitcher engaged for ages。 It's best if you're looking for small motifs and if you have imagination about how to use them in projects。I really liked the fans and corsets and flowers, and there are some various fonts that are very pretty。However, I would have liked the book to have more images of the finished work and different projects for their use。 This is a big book of vintage motifs that will keep a stitcher engaged for ages。 It's best if you're looking for small motifs and if you have imagination about how to use them in projects。I really liked the fans and corsets and flowers, and there are some various fonts that are very pretty。However, I would have liked the book to have more images of the finished work and different projects for their use。 。。。more

I have cross stitched for many years and own a lot of patterns and encyclopedia style compilation books。 I am a little bit jaded when it comes to new design books。 In many ways, the designs all begin to look the same。This book, is another thing altogether。 I have recently purchased the Fables and Fairy Tales by Ms Enginger and based on how much I enjoyed that book, I pre-ordered her Christmas book and picked up this book as well。The designs range from small to full size pages。 You can design you I have cross stitched for many years and own a lot of patterns and encyclopedia style compilation books。 I am a little bit jaded when it comes to new design books。 In many ways, the designs all begin to look the same。This book, is another thing altogether。 I have recently purchased the Fables and Fairy Tales by Ms Enginger and based on how much I enjoyed that book, I pre-ordered her Christmas book and picked up this book as well。The designs range from small to full size pages。 You can design your own sampler style project using any number of the designs in this book and they will all match well together。 The designs are definitely retro but will a European flair that I have not seen in a US published book before。What I have been really impressed by is the minimal use of backstitch in most of the designs。 Usually, a book of small design uses intensive backstitch to give definition to the design。 In this book, it is only used as part of the design element。 As I am not one who loves backstitching (though, as hard as it is to believe, there are those who do love it), these designs are perfect for me。I’ve looked at this designer’s previously published books which have been made available only in other languages and sincerely hope that she and the publisher will make those books available in English as well。 。。。more

I love every single pattern in this book。 The patterns are more vintage than retro, makes them right in my wheelhouse。 They are super colorful and very easy to use。 There are also lots of teapots。 I adore teapots! In the above picture, the teapot pattern I am working on is very similar to the teapot I own。I ordered a hard copy of this book today。 I would rather hold the book。 Easier to stitch from than a piece of paper which gets bent and faded。This book is great for any cross stitcher。I receive I love every single pattern in this book。 The patterns are more vintage than retro, makes them right in my wheelhouse。 They are super colorful and very easy to use。 There are also lots of teapots。 I adore teapots! When I get a new cross stitch pattern, book or magazine generally I'm super excited for at least one section of it。 Especially when it's a book with lots of motifs or project options。 Cross stitch is my number 1 crafting passion! Unfortunately when I opened up Retro Cross Stitch I felt really let down。 The motifs in this book might be a bit unique (like the typewriter ones) but the reality is that they are no different than what you can find in the average cross stitch magazine that specializes in smaller motifs。 With no actual large projects or designs, no sampler usage examples for the motifs and little to no truly unique items I was let down。 Maybe if you have a specific thought in mind for corsets, typewriters or flowers you would find this book's patterns useful。 But for me they fell a bit flat。 DefinitionsThe biggest let down for me was to discover that this was not retro at all! In fact it's vintage。 Now you might be thinking, what's the big deal? Or what's the difference? Retro tends to be bold 60's, 70's and 80's patterns and trends。 Vintage is back to the late 1800's - early 1900's when corsets were king, women couldn't walk around alone and having a job or voting were definitely not in the cards for us ladies。 Quite a difference in my mind。 While I love vintage more than retro (usually); in this case I felt Retro Cross Stitch missed the mark whether it was truly retro or vintage。 Some cute towels, babies bibs, or other kitschy items might be inspired from this book but otherwise it's likely to collect dust on your shelf; or at least on mine。 For this and more of my reviews please visit my blog at: Epic ReadingPlease note: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher via Net Galley。 This is an honest and unbiased review。 。。。more

Not what I was expecting, but still worthy of five stars。 This is more “retro vintage” than what my idea of retro is (“retro funky”)。 It has charming designs, and I’m absolutely planning on stitching some of the patterns from the Coffee & Tea section。 Think ~cute old French aesthetic~, and that’s exactly what sort of patterns are in this book。
