Summary

Cursed Bunny is a genre-defying collection of short stories by Korean author Bora Chung。 Blurring the lines between magical realism, horror, and science-fiction, Chung uses elements of the fantastic and surreal to address the very real horrors and cruelties of patriarchy and capitalism in modern society。

Anton Hur’s translation skilfully captures the way Chung’s prose effortlessly glides from being terrifying to wryly humorous。 Winner of a PEN/Heim Grant。

This has been getting raves from others。 I found the short stories average for the genre though and would give it three and a half stars。

Short story collections generally get bad ratings from me because I think it's inevitable that you're going to end up liking some of them and others not so much。 In this case, even though I have my favorites, I can say they were all at the least very interesting and full of fresh and original ideas。 It had been a while since I've found an author with the range Bora Chung has。 There's a little sci-fi, a little horror and a lot of magical realism, but overall I could describe all these stories as Short story collections generally get bad ratings from me because I think it's inevitable that you're going to end up liking some of them and others not so much。 In this case, even though I have my favorites, I can say they were all at the least very interesting and full of fresh and original ideas。 It had been a while since I've found an author with the range Bora Chung has。 There's a little sci-fi, a little horror and a lot of magical realism, but overall I could describe all these stories as "grim fairytales"。 I think this is the first time the author is translated into English and I can fairly say I'll be anxiously waiting her next translated work ✨ 。。。more

Hmmmm so overall a really great collection。 Genre is hard to pin down (this is fine, I liked reading lots of different types of stories)。 Kind of weird。 Very Twilight Zone meets Edgar Allen Poe meets Aesop's Fables meets a whole lot of other things。 I liked some stories more than others (which is normal)。 This book did make me talk at my Kindle a lot saying things like "what the fuck" out of shock。 In a good kind of way。 Hmmmm so overall a really great collection。 Genre is hard to pin down (this is fine, I liked reading lots of different types of stories)。 Kind of weird。 Very Twilight Zone meets Edgar Allen Poe meets Aesop's Fables meets a whole lot of other things。 I liked some stories more than others (which is normal)。 This book did make me talk at my Kindle a lot saying things like "what the fuck" out of shock。 In a good kind of way。 。。。more

I read the first four stories & they were weird, sometimes gross/horror-like。 (I would think the first story, The Head, would be creepy enough to be discomforting to some; for me, I had to laugh at the end。 Is it the epitome of flushing your life down the toilet? Shitting your life away?) My favorite of the four was one called The Frozen Finger。 The fifth story is one entitled Snare & after reading the first few sentences, just nope。 Not going there。 So, I stopped。 A book for the abandoned pile。

Such a weird yet delightful read of short stories of varying length that kept you reading even when you feel disgusted with the subject matter, or wondering where the stories are leading you to。More of my thoughts here: https://www。instagram。com/p/CTOM43gPpk4/ Such a weird yet delightful read of short stories of varying length that kept you reading even when you feel disgusted with the subject matter, or wondering where the stories are leading you to。More of my thoughts here: https://www。instagram。com/p/CTOM43gPpk4/ 。。。more

[4。5 actually] This is one of the most consistent single-author collections I’ve read。 The stories are dark, adult-themed fairy tales, ranging from the grotesque to the dread-filled。 I hope this author’s work gets further translated in English。Highlights include the title story and “Scars。” The weakest stories are probably the last two。

For a number of these it seems like the concluding sentence should be "Crazy, right?" or "Wouldn't that be fucked up?" but there are several turns of phrase that got me, and the experience of reading it was on the whole pleasant and evocative。The first two stories are like stress dreams that I've had which was upsetting and effective。 Also, none of the other stories are as gross as the first two, the very first one in particular, just an FYI。 For a number of these it seems like the concluding sentence should be "Crazy, right?" or "Wouldn't that be fucked up?" but there are several turns of phrase that got me, and the experience of reading it was on the whole pleasant and evocative。The first two stories are like stress dreams that I've had which was upsetting and effective。 Also, none of the other stories are as gross as the first two, the very first one in particular, just an FYI。 。。。more

Extraordinary for its breadth and the completely different emotional grasp each story manages to have on you。 There’s a recurring body-horror fixation in several stories (particularly in the first half of the book) that manages to cover so many separate parts of the body that you end up with your skin crawling in about 10 different places。 I’ve seen a lot of well-earned praise for the first 3 stories, which are brilliant and completely in-your-face, but I think my favourite might have been the l Extraordinary for its breadth and the completely different emotional grasp each story manages to have on you。 There’s a recurring body-horror fixation in several stories (particularly in the first half of the book) that manages to cover so many separate parts of the body that you end up with your skin crawling in about 10 different places。 I’ve seen a lot of well-earned praise for the first 3 stories, which are brilliant and completely in-your-face, but I think my favourite might have been the last one, ‘Reunion’, which is an absolutely heart-rending story that I had to reread most of immediately just to sit in the feeling of it for a bit longer。 。。。more

정말 대박이야!

Here is a brief view on each story and my rating:1。 The Head (9。5): this is Junji Ito style 100% (the king of horror manga)。 Unsettling, creepy, its about a woman who keeps being approached by a "head" from the toilet。。。。 horrific story but unforgettable。2。 The Embodiment (8。5): Also creepy, about a woman getting pregnant from pills and her absurdist search of a "father" for this child。 Very strong ending, and equally funny and disturbing3。 Cursed Bunny (9): The title story is a good case of the "dark fairy tale" asthetic present in several stories, about a family that makes cursed items and sells them as family business。 Very thrilling and keeps you tense。4。 The Frozen Finger (7): perhaps my least favorite story here。 A good gothic story about a ghost finger following a woman that just got out of a traffic accident。 Lots of hillucinations, good writing but got a bit too confusing。5。 Snare (9): Another fairy tale style story about a man who finds a fox that bleeds gold。 Amazing and harrowing, loved its atmosphere and vibe, some truely powerful imagery here。6。 Goodbye, My Love (8): A Sci fi story about a man who fell in love with a robot, but as newer models come and his model becomes unsupported the robot faces pending "death" as battery stops charging with no support for this model anymore。 Strong ending also, one of the slower stories but still unique7。 Scars (9。5): Wow, the longest story here at 50 pages is also one of my favorites。 Also follows the dark fairy tale vibe, about a boy getting captured and tortured in a cave by a strange "creature"。 The themes here merged so powerfully with the story and conclusion, it left me speechless8。 Home Sweet Home (8): A twist on the haunted house premise, when a family in modern days buys a 4 story building in a cheap neibourhood, with some financial troubles。 Also a page turner though the ending was a bit predictable here (still well done and brings out themes of social loneliness in our days very well)9。 Ruler of the Winds and Sands (8): Also Fairy Tale, but this one though dark is the mildest one from the bunch。 About a cursed family that dreams to be kings of the desert and sand as they have an airship, but they try to beat the curse to protect the future of their children10。 Reunion (9。5): Just when I though I have seen the different styles of Bora Chung comes this medetative, literary fiction style ghost story。 A foreigner comes to Poland to study, and as she goes to the plaza every night she sees a ghost of an old man constantly。 This probably had the strongest theme, as it focuses on people who have went through trauma, and how people used to live in survival mood face difficulty in living a "normal" life without being able to move on from the past。 Some really strong prose here。This is a definite all time favorite, and my 3rd all time favorite short story collection (right after Dreamsongs by George R。 R。 Martin, and The Penguin Book of Japanese Short Stories)。 Utterly unique and haunting, this is something I would recommend to almost anyone, except those who want more classical stuff and absolutely don't want any horror elements in their stories。 。。。more

"For some people, their lives are ruled by one shocking event reverberating through their survival instincts。 Life shrinks into a trap made up of a shimmering moment in the past, a trap where they endlessly repeat that singular moment where they were surest of being alive。 That moment is short, but long after it has passed, good times as well as bad slip like sand through their fingers as they meaninglessly repeat and confirm their survival。" Cursed Bunny is a collection of 10 short stories writ "For some people, their lives are ruled by one shocking event reverberating through their survival instincts。 Life shrinks into a trap made up of a shimmering moment in the past, a trap where they endlessly repeat that singular moment where they were surest of being alive。 That moment is short, but long after it has passed, good times as well as bad slip like sand through their fingers as they meaninglessly repeat and confirm their survival。" Cursed Bunny is a collection of 10 short stories written by Bora Chung and translated by the ever-talented Anton Hur。 These short stories transcend the conventional genres for fiction and they range from sci-fi, fantasy, folklore/mythology, experimental, gothic, magical realism, and horror。 Cursed Bunny reminds me of The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (also a collection of short stories written by Mariana Enríquez) but with its own unique Asian flavor, subtlety, and restraint。 These stories, albeit presented in a variety of genres, are full of allegories that reflected human desires, greed, lust, selfishness, love, pleasures, fetishes, and trauma。 Readers would eventually tie up these themes with capitalism and toxic patriarchy which were deeply seated in our society。 Some stories (in particular, the first 2 stories) went even further to examine a woman's body, youth, reproductive rights in the form of "body horror"。 Each story is impactful, memorable, and definitely offers some food for thought。My personal favorites are Head (a woman who sees a head popping out from the toilet when she is about to flush it), Embodiment (a woman, who is a virgin, took birth control pills for 6 months and then found out she was pregnant), Goodbye, My Love (a love story between a designer of AI companions and her first AI companion, which turned out to be a brutal and tragic story), Snare (a man found a fox caught in a snare that bleeds gold and decided to take it home to build his wealth, whereby the consequences of his cruelty affected his own family), and Reunion (a love story between a woman and a man in Poland, with ghostly elements and fetishes)。 Cursed Bunny may not be for everyone, but I do think that it is time for the public to appreciate more genre-defying fiction written by Asians。 Once you get into them, you will be amazed by the originality and creativity of Asian authors in this arena which was once dominated by Western authors。 Cursed Bunny is my most anticipated read for 2021 and it lived up to my expectations! A solid 5/5 star for Bora Chung's creativity and Anton Hur's impeccable translation who managed to bring out the Asian flavor in this collection! I do hope to see this being longlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize! 。。。more

I really struggle with short story collections。 I enjoy the feeling of getting lost in a novel and spending a good few hours getting to know the situation, surrounding and characters。 I feel most short stories just can't deliver that。 It seems to me inevitable that the stories in any given collection will vary in quality - I read a great story and then the following one is an absolute dud which makes me want to give up on the collection ( Im looking at you 'Her Body and Other Parties')。 So its a I really struggle with short story collections。 I enjoy the feeling of getting lost in a novel and spending a good few hours getting to know the situation, surrounding and characters。 I feel most short stories just can't deliver that。 It seems to me inevitable that the stories in any given collection will vary in quality - I read a great story and then the following one is an absolute dud which makes me want to give up on the collection ( Im looking at you 'Her Body and Other Parties')。 So its a pleasant and welcome surprise when a short story collection is one of my favourite reads of the year so far。 Cursed Bunny is a collection of short stories in which the author varies genre - there's gross out body horror, ghost stories, sci-fi, fairytale, mythology。 I would say the entire collection is incredibly dark and if I was forced to file it under one specific genre I would choose horror。 Below is a short summary of each of the stories found in this collection: The Head - one day a disgusting misshapen lump pops out of a woman's toilet。 The lump claims to be the daughter of the child, but a daughter formed from the woman's bathroom waste。 It's a disgusting story about bodily waste and the beginning and ends of human life。 After my initial reading I thought, 'well that was gross and offputting, but nothing more', until I went to use the bathroom in later in the day and found myself darting out afterwards to avoid my own 'lump' and found that the thought of having a shower was genuinely freaking me out。 The Embodiment - another bizarre story with gross out elements。 A young woman becomes pregnant and must find a father in time for her baby's arrival into the world。 While this wasn't one of my favourites, I thought it was a very smart story exploring the perils and pressures of single motherhood。 The Cursed Bunny - a little boy lays in bed listening to his grandfather recite a story he has heard many times。 Then grandfather tells an old family tale of the destruction of one of the most powerful family's in the region, all thanks to a cursed fetish object created by the grandfather's family。 One of my favourites - a classic horror story with heart。 The Frozen Finger - the aftermath of a horrific car crash。 An eery and stunning short story。 Snare - Maybe my favourite in the collection。 A classic tale of greed gone wrong; a riff off the old tale of King Midas。 Goodbye, My Love - Classic AI gone wrong。 I felt this was one of the weaker stories of the collection, due to the plot being predictable and tropey。 ( If you have read any AI story or watched anything with AI you know this story) Scars - Folklore/mythology feels。 A strange man appears in a village with a murky past and many scars。 This was one of the saddest stories in the collection。 Home Sweet Home - A haunted house story with a twist。 While I found the final twist confusing, it was also different which I respected。 Ruler of the Winds and Sand - Fairy tale like。 Feels like something you'd read or have read to you as a child。 Reunion - The ghost story of the bunch。 I thought it was effective - more sad than creepy, but I suppose that's the case for most ghost stories。 。。。more

★★★½ | As a whole, this collection is impressive in its commitment to using classic horror, sci-fi, and fantasy tropes to depict the realities of various abuse systems。 I found the stories to either be masterful or too obvious, which left me with an uneven experience。 Nevertheless, the ones that worked for me really worked for me and are worth their weight in gold (pun intended)。
