Summary

'Schoolgirl' is the novella that first established Dazai as a member of Japan's literary elite。 Essentially the start of Dazai's career, the 1933 work gained notoriety for its ironic and inventive use of language, and how it illuminated the prevalent social structures of a lost time。

I see that many people rated this book quite low, which is hard to copenhend to me。 In this novel we can follow a Japanese schoolgirl for a day through her thoughts。

Was my question and apparently the author tends to write his women in such manner in other books of his (smh) which I’m starting to see as I’m reading his other works , I remember setting sun also having some unnecessary text about women (I can’t remember )OVERALL - easy read , simple text , short However , one may find it boring if they don’t resonate with it or don’t care to learn about others , this book does not take any turns or have any action or intensity 。 It’s simple and follows a girl and her thoughts 。。。more

4。5/5Wow。 what a bewildering and scatterbrained novel。 The way you are placed in the head of this girl through a full day of her life is unlike anything I’ve read。 She’s deeply conflicted。 Self-loathing and narcissistic。 Selfish and selfless。 Childlike and elderly。 Libertarian and fascist。 A really interesting read。

I enjoyed this book quite a lot because the schoolgirls way of thinking was not similar to mine at all but there was occasionally thoughts we both had; it was a fresh perspective but not completely unknown。 I liked how blunt and honest the writing was, its something I’ve noticed and admired in other works of Osamu Dazai。 The book feels unfiltered and real and I find that fascinating; like I’m actually looking into someone else’s brain。 Great read, left me thinking!

I read this in one sitting, and the prose was nice enough。 Unfortunately, this novella was completely and utterly。。。 empty。 Amid platitudes and clichés about universal notions of “girlhood,” little happens *to* our narrator, whether outside or inside her mind: rather, we hear a somewhat-disjointed internal monologue peppered with associative half-scenes。 I have no issue with slice-of-life works, or works that don’t follow traditional plot structures。 But this work relies so heavily on faux-profu I read this in one sitting, and the prose was nice enough。 Unfortunately, this novella was completely and utterly。。。 empty。 Amid platitudes and clichés about universal notions of “girlhood,” little happens *to* our narrator, whether outside or inside her mind: rather, we hear a somewhat-disjointed internal monologue peppered with associative half-scenes。 I have no issue with slice-of-life works, or works that don’t follow traditional plot structures。 But this work relies so heavily on faux-profundity and purplish (albeit pleasantly simple)-prose that I didn’t even get a whiff of story。 Seems eminently quotable in fragments on tumblr, but not good for much else。 。。。more

Loved the concept of following a girl from the second she wakes up until the minute she goes to sleep。 Such beautiful stream-of-consciousness-like writing, I had to hold myself back lest I save/highlight every sentence in the book。 I'm just creeped out by the fact that a dude wrote this。 There's a disturbing bit where she thinks about how gross women are and how she wants to stay a girl forever that fully took me out of the story。 Surely that's gotta be the author's misogyny talking。 If it wasn' Loved the concept of following a girl from the second she wakes up until the minute she goes to sleep。 Such beautiful stream-of-consciousness-like writing, I had to hold myself back lest I save/highlight every sentence in the book。 I'm just creeped out by the fact that a dude wrote this。 There's a disturbing bit where she thinks about how gross women are and how she wants to stay a girl forever that fully took me out of the story。 Surely that's gotta be the author's misogyny talking。 If it wasn't for that, I'd probably give it 4 or 5 stars。Favourite quotes:(view spoiler)[ I got up and hastily folded up my bedding。 As I hoisted it, I was startled to hear myself exclaim, Alley-oop! I have never thought that I was the kind of girl who would utter such an unrefined expression as "Alley-oop。" It seems like the kind of thing an old lady would shout—"Alley-oop!" It's disgusting。 Why would I have said such a thing? It's as if there were an old lady somewhere inside of me, and it makes me sick。 I'll have to be careful from now on。 "In this very magazine, there was the headline, "Young Women's Shortcomings," with things various people had written。 As I read it, I got the feeling that they were talking about me and I started to feel self-conscious。" I wanted everyone on the train to notice it, but nobody did。 If someone would simply take a look at my pretty furoshiki, I would be willing to go home with him and marry into his family。 Given my lack of experience, if my books were taken away from me, I would be utterly devastated。 That's how much I depend on what's written in books。 I'll read one book and be completely wild about it—I'll trust it, I'll assimilate it, I'll sympathize with it, I'll try to make it a part of my life。 Then, I'll read another book and, instantly, I'll switch over to that one。 The sly ability to steal someone else's experience and recreate it as if it were my own is the only real talent I possess。 My eyes looked so nice。 They were so pale and clear。 I wondered if staring at the beautiful evening sky for so long had made my eyes look like this。 Lucky me。 When I looked up the word "rococo" in the dictionary the other day and saw that it was defined as a decorative style that was elaborate yet devoid of substance, I had to laugh。 It was an apt description。 Heaven forbid if beauty were to have substance。 Genuine beauty is always meaningless, without virtue。 It goes without saying。 Which is why I love rococo。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I rather liked this。 Seems Catcher in the Rye-like and also very much its own thing。 Love the stream of consciousness style。 Wish it was longer than just one day (and 100 pages)。

The last thirty pages were engaging and beautifully written but the first 2/3 rds did not read like a schoolgirl - maybe it was the translation but the words didn’t reflect her age or the culture。 What teenager uses words like “wither away”, “ the two of them seemed an unlikely pairing,” or “I saw the barley burgeoning” I couldn’t connect with her voice until the last third and then she just rips through you。

so so good。。。 related a little too much to the character

While usually old Japanese literature doesn’t appeal to me, Osamu Dazai is an incredible author and by reading his novels it’s clear as to why he has gained so much recognition。 I have wanted to try one of his books for a while and when I saw Schoolgirl which seemed like a relatively short, quick read I was eager to pick it up; upon first glance I wasn’t too intrigued, the narrator which is a young teenage girl who remains unnamed throughout the novel seemed incredible dreary。 It felt as though While usually old Japanese literature doesn’t appeal to me, Osamu Dazai is an incredible author and by reading his novels it’s clear as to why he has gained so much recognition。 I have wanted to try one of his books for a while and when I saw Schoolgirl which seemed like a relatively short, quick read I was eager to pick it up; upon first glance I wasn’t too intrigued, the narrator which is a young teenage girl who remains unnamed throughout the novel seemed incredible dreary。 It felt as though a large part of the book was her just complaining about her mundane life, however as the book progresses she becomes more likeable, as a teenage girl myself I found myself relating to her in a lot of aspects。 She also appears to be extremely self aware of her pessimistic view on life and her flaws which is refreshing to see, while this book didn’t really interest me at first I found myself enjoying it far more than I expected towards the end。 I’d recommend this book to all ages, there isn’t much plot but that doesn’t take away from the wonderful writing, it can easily be read in one sitting and I will definitely be looking into more of Osamu Dazai’s work。 。。。more
